As far as I am aware, ARR's extensive use of flute till date has probably been in his recently released Lagaan (Hindi) number "Radha kaise na jale" (the first interlude). I think he had done this because the song was about Krishna and Radha and moreover, he was to sound more indian and folkish for the film and hence the flute (although i'm aware of the Thiruda Thiruda no.)
Deepak: It is flute.

Bharath,
You got me totally wrong. My opinion is mine whether 1 or 100 talk about different. Got me? My opinion is not something that changes with others influence. Now I will pick the same films to tell you how many songs does not have flute!
But frankly nowadays ARR impresses me more often than IR does thats all! :-) Sure. ARR never impressed me. To me IR=Music and Sivaji=Acting. That's all.

Deepak,
That is amazing usage of flute in Vaanathu Tharakaiye (both interludes) by Maestro. BTW 'Kanmanikku' from Annan also has beautiful flute piece in the beginning of the song and both interlude. Mesmerizing!

Bharath,
Your previous posting really hurted me. Now I am here to prove that ARR has not used flute in majority of songs, though it was NOT my intention originally. Prove me wrong friend.
ARR NOT using Flute:
Alai Paayudhe (No flute for 5 out of 8 songs)
Alai Paayudhe
Endrendrum Punnakai
Kaadhal Sadukudu
September Maatham
Snehithane
Coming in alphabetical order.

KS & STS,
There's definitely another instrument used... It comes before the flute piece...
If you can recollect the prelude to Vayasupulla - it would be more obvious there...

STS,
I am sorry! if I hurt You! I thought I said I am not taking it as a challenge but only taking it sportively! I dunno where in my words I have mislead u to believe that I am challenging u and ur opinion and trying to baptize u to ARR.
I was in the latter part of that posting only replying to some other posting which subscribed to a dumb equation that ARR = computer! i think they never listed to ARR as closely as they do to IR.
now for your list! just think about this! amonng 180 songs of ARR u mightve listened to 20-25 and hence u r listing this out.
inspite of that from ur list I think (though am not sure) snehidane and kanai katti kollathe's interludes have flute. but again i anticipate u expect a big list. IMHO from i80 close to 100 might have flute interludes.
again I never asked u to change to ARR. the point i was trying to make was that HCIRF dont ever listen to ARR and the reverse is not true:-)

Bharath
Actually IMO your very long postings is the reason. I dont think many people read thru your postings completely and there is a chance to miss many things what exactly you thought.
Now regarding Flute, I always had a feeling that with just tabla, violin(s), and flute IR created wonders.
The percentage here regarding who used more would be irrelevant as the number we are talking for IR is too much where as ARR is limited. This would be like comparing how many cover drives tendulkar hit when compared to VVS laxman.
But one song of IR that impressed me most was Kuzhaloodum kannanukku, the starting actually was really great. Lot of naturality.

IR has used violins and flute as the main accompanying instruments. In fact, he has even used them (atleast, one of them) in most of the songs that sound more modern/westernised, probably to give them a more Indian-touch.
I have been listening to ARR's songs right from the beginning and feel that he has not really used flute, and even violins, as main accompanying instruments. Even if there are (as i've not heard all his songs though i've heard most of his popular hits!!) I'm sure they would be far too less in number. There will be songs that are more in number where he has used them for a few seconds. It is just that he uses more of base/lead guitar, drums and other instruments that sound more western which is probably why his songs sound more westernised!!!
In fact, of late he seems to have started using them more frequently, probably in an effort to sound more Indian!!:-))

STS,
1)hai rama - rangeela
2)pyaar ye jaane kaisa hai- range..
3)kya kare kya na kare- range
4)hai yai yo - range...
5)kamosh raat- thakshak
6)boondo se baathen- thakshak
7)jiya jale- dilse
8)hey ajnabhi- dilse
9)bombay theme
10)ennaivelai azhage- kadhalar dinam
11)roja roja - kadhalr dinam
12)tirupachi arvuvale - taj mahal
13)aathangara marame- karuthamma
see saying ARR does not use flute extensively is like saying IR doesnt use violin at all. Giving IR flute examples is irrelevant! Thats not topic of discussion!
some one made a good example of a cover drive earlier! This is the problem with IR fans that if ARR is good in something they come running claiming that iR is good in it! If asked to list songs only after 1992 then most of them wud run bak!
1 more thing saying ARR = computer or sounds non-indian is utter nonsense. This is what is quantified as anti-ARR bias! Majority of his songs r indian. His fusion techniques r best by an Indian! (again 2000 IR fans will come running saying no no etc) I dont know if violin or flute was invented by Indian( if u argue Lord. Krishna invented it... I wud just :-) )
so plz dont subscribe to the most superficial view that ARR uses only guitar drums etc. That may be a common denominator but not the only common denom.
Infact I hate this dappan koothu "dontanakara " songs more like hitting a "saavu molam" which is why i prefer drums so much!
IR after 1992 is highly below average with only flashes of brilliance. I listened to kaathal saadhi that was terribly hyped y every T, D and H . It maybe reasonable allrigght but by no means deservoing of the adjectives that were used.
I am noticing a pattern here abt IR fans having just superficial knowledge abt ARR (like compter man,, napster person etc) and IR as a person who is this flair filled creator of music. I am sick and tired of it!

KS,
//"I have been listening to ARR's songs right from the beginning and feel that he has not really used flute"//
and then u say this
//"Even if there are (as i've not heard all his songs though i've heard most of his popular hits!!"//
if thats definitely not a contradiction then what is! This perfectly summarisez a ARR critique!

Bharath,
Maybe u got me wrong...that was'nt a contradiction...
The first stmt. was to convey to people like you that I have been hearing to most of his songs (both Tamil and Hindi).
The second stmt. was not to rule out the possiblility of ARR having used flute significantly in some of his songs (maybe, respecting ur thoughts..:-)) as I have not heard all of his. I'm sure, even u would'nt have heard all his songs. And so, I don't rule out the possiblility of such songs, which are certainly few in number (as otherwise, i'm sure I would have heard them - I listen to songs quiet a lot...even at work). Anyway, if u read my earlier posting carefully, i'm sure you would understand what i meant...it is just that he does'nt use flute or violins as his main instruments.
And in the last stmt in my earlier posting, read "them" as "flute and violins" and not as "base/lead guitar and drums":-)

If asked to list songs only after 1992 then most of them wud run bak! which instrument? after 1992? 1993? 1994? ... 1999? and when people quote you say it's substandard and brand him as violin, tabla person. i listenened to zubeida that was terribly hyped by every t,d and h. it may be decent allright but by no means deserving of the great adjectively heaped upon it. I am noticing a pattern here abt ARR fans having just superficial knowledge abt IR (like violin man, apashruthi person etc) and ARR as a person who is this flair filled creator of music. I am sick and tired of it!

not funny quoting me in reverse. maybe reflective of the stangnancy of an IR fan :-)
//"which instrument? after 1992? 1993? 1994? ... 1999? and when people quote you say it's substandard and brand him as violin, tabla person"//
what do u mean by which instrument! and no one quoted him as substandard bcoz he used tabala. first substantiate and then speak!
zubeida was good b.t.w better than kaathal saathi!
//"I am noticing a pattern here abt ARR fans having just superficial knowledge abt IR (like violin man, apashruthi person etc"//
he he. we werent born in 1992. we were alive b4 then and very much listening to IR. but u cannot say the same abt urself! violin man! apasruthi.. c'mon do something original!

flute is an obvious thing and i am surprised u guys dont know abt it!
