M.S.Viswanathan had given some memorable tunes in 80's too.

Songs composed by MSV on request of Raja and Amaran for a similar tune of "Vaan Meedhile Inba Thein Vandhu Peiyudhe"-Film:Chandi Rani, is
"Vaa Venilla Unnai thaane Vaanam Thedudhe", this
had been told by Amaran in many of his interviews.
other songs tuned by MSV in the films are
"Kuzhaloothum Kannanukku" and "Dil Dil Dil"
and Raja's contribution is "Ooru Sanam" "Sakara Kattikku", "Paavana Guru" "Thedum Kanpaarvai".

sk- Many, many thanks :-)
You have taken me back to my schooldays (8th-9th stds) of 1983-84, when 7 AM meant Pongum Poombunal and last minute frantic home work!
I can almost hear the announcer saying 'Pongum Poombunal'- I recall that exact spot when the music would lower and the announcer came on. Thirai Thandha Isai would follow at 7.30-7.45 and Pudhu Vellam -7.45-8.00. Aah-Malarum Ninaivugal!
Thanks, again!

Song of the Day: engirundhO vandhaan from padikkaadha mEdhai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engirundho.rm
- This song never ceases to amaze me. If you read kaNNan en sEvagan as a bharathiyaar kavidhai, you would think it is quite hilarious. KVM has turned it on its head, to make it a melancholic, sentimental song. The song is a background one, with Sivaji toiling away helping S.V.Ranga Rao, and S.V.R looking at Sivaji as kaNNan. Seergazhi's rendition makes this doubly memorable. I like the progression of music in the line "naNbanaai, mandhiriyaai, nallaasiriyanumaai, paNbilE dheivamaai... paarvaiyilE sEvaganaai". What a great piece of work!
- SK writes: "KVM scored music for Padikkaatha Methai. I have seen the movie several times in the company of family and friends. Everytime the song engirundhO vandhaan, idaichchaadhi naan endraan gets over in the movie, I look around to find that almost everyone has tears in their eyes!"

dear mr sk,
the pongum poompunal instrumental music by MSV is one of the eight instrumental pieces released sometime in early 70s. In 70s, Chennai AIR used to
accomodate these tunes to fill up the time in between two programmes.
do you have all those tunes?

sk :) Thanks a million for taking me down the memory lane. 7:00hrs AIR, Trichy - regional news will be over and we switch to PPP (I always use to think this piece of music best justifies the program and its title. You can almost feel this party taking place near a 'punal'). By 8:00 we have to surrender the transistor to my father for his carnatic music in AIR, Madras. By 9:30 there is nothing other than IOKT-TS2. But I have to run for my school by 9:55. Why did I grow, to almost invariably see stiff faces in Toronto Subway every morning or sterner faces if I drive.
BTW - amarakaaviyam - greatest of flops of MSV. Produced by his son Gopi Krishna(?). Acted by Kamal and Sripriya(?) - is remembered for the only thing. IT was MSV's 1000 film! Yes, the only time it ever has been achieved in the world thus far. But what a stupid performance.
We use to compare MSV those days with Sunil Gavaskar (numbers, nothing great) and IR with GR Vishwanath (elegance personified) :))

MangiyadhOr nilavinilE SOTD June 5. I have heard this song sung by TMS ( very well ) but can not recall the movie.( nichaya thamboolam?)It is in Ragam Desh. (Incidentally, the one by CSJ is not in Desh.)
More info anyone?
EngirunthO vandhaan: A great soul stirring song. Triggered my nostalgia. The scene in that movie where Ranga Rao smokes and throws out his last cigarrette is my all time favorite.

Venkat, I am not sure if MSV's discography exceeds even 400 leave alone 1000. His movie list is in the Pazhaya paadal pakkam of newtfmpage.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/vr.html
To reach 1000 movies in 1981 he would have had to work @ 30 movies/yr right from 1950 which sounds highly unlikely. I cant believe we have lost account of the remaining 600 movies. So I am curious to know the source of your info and if possible obtain the complete filmography. Saravanan, whats your take on this?

Skeptics; See for example http://www.msviswanathan.com/ and follow some discussions therein.
The final tally as people put is is 1100+
Still, for myself personally numbers do not matter.

"Still, for myself personally numbers do not matter."
Venkat, when you proclaim it as some kind of achievment then the burden of proof is on your shoulders :-)
I couldnt see any list there confirming this in that site.

vijay, it is an achievement. But, the onus is not on my shoulders and I am not proclaiming anything else (his grateness or my affinity towards him) on the basis of this:) I am just dropping a fact. Still, see below;
I vividly remember this, because my record store friend managed to pre-sell about 100 albums of this before its arrival. Most of which were promptly returned.
M S Viswanathan, music composer with over 1,000 films to his credit, sings Vidai kodu http://www.themusicmagazine.com/kannathil.html

Venkat, I am yet to see any list anywhere. I have heard few people mention this before(without showing any lists either), thats why I brought it up again today. And both dinakaran and musicmagazine are not the most credible sites either.
"vijay, it is an achievement. I am just dropping a fact. "
Its a fact/achievment only if you know for sure it is :-)

If you talk about the credibility of websites, who is going to vouch for anything?
vijay :) Has anyone managed to list all movies/songs of Illayaraja? With all capabilities these days people still find it difficult. We are talking about a career spanning 50 years most of which were in days of poor record(!) keeping.
But, do not get the impression that I fully believe in this. I am skeptical too. I first heard it, may be, in 1978-80. I keep getting this from different sources (today when I randomly googled, I got few quick picks on this). As I grew up with this myth, I am positively inclined to believe this - until, until ... someone proves otherwise!

Venkat its not 50 years, if you are saying 1981 is the year that he crossed 1000. More like 25 or 27. And there are quite a few forumers here like Manisegaran, Saravanan etc. who have managed to list the stats on many old films. At this point of time, I am willing to believe in them when they MSV didnt exceed 400. Also the math reveals the unlikelihood of it happening.
On Dinakaran, what I meant was they could have just lifted the info from MSVs home page without independently verifying it or just based on hearsay. Absence of a list increases the doubts further. As for consolidating IRs works, rajaangham has done more than an adequate job up until 2000. I think its high time someone did that for GR, KVM, MSV and other old TFM MDs.
