The only answer I did not like in your posting , was "I am not a trained musician", this should be used to prevent anyone from evaluating our work. Without music knowledge you would have not invested a big chunk of $$$ on triton, I like to stop it here,
if you feel irriated by my comments, I am realy sorry my intention was to help.

read this as "this should not be!"

hey...I'm always welcome for negative comments...and It has helped me a lot. I give it a the song a good listen in the light of the comment..and I usually find it to be true. But i just couldnt associate your feedback "Sounds more like an army flag march than 'lost love'" with the song. Its tough to find a good reviewer who does not try to please you...and I appreciate your comments in that way. I also go by the same laws...appreciate good work and point out the negatives to make the artist more aware.

Folks:
I appreciate that Jay and Srikanth are discussing so openly. Hope it didn't give any room for Politics in others minds.
Well actually I too have some humble opinions on Jay's song...be it not an indian/tamil/whatever music...Using Factory Patches, whether he's trained in music or not...It's good! but when I heard twice or thrice pardon me if I am wrong...it sounded like Titanic song in a different rhythm/style which has definitely a flavour. This may be coincidence...Later More...
Jay being a cool guy by nature...
won't punch me:-))

Aditya

Aditya,
Jay has used a simple chord progression something like this C, F, C, G (main theme)
May be thats the reason you feel that you have heard this song before. BTW Titanic chord progression is
somewhat different. As I've mentioned before Jay has a good taste.
Technically (here Technical means Musical, not Electronics) the song does not have any modulation (key change)
or any other interesting turns. But I really liked the way in which Jay has presented this tune. Very soothing.
Keep up the good work Jay! All the best for your future projects. Next time try composing a song which is musically challenging.. I tell you... If you do that, I'm sure, no body can beat you..! All the best..
Regards,
Naveen

AdityA: :-). similiar thing with your "making of a song". i am reminded of an old/carnatic song with the exact pallavi as your opening string section (or the opening of the string section). thoNdaiyila irukku, but can't figure out what it is. anyways, again the song is too small to fully appreciate. imo, you could make to a five to six minutes long song (just keep elaborating on the two themes - pallavi and charaNam) you have already composed. just a thought.

Jay,
I like your style. Same goes with Timpani, voice pads (dunno exact combi) and other orchestral sounds in this piece - very nicely arranged and "layered" as you put it. Your "build-up" of mood compliments all the sounds you have used. If you ask me, this would make a good end-credits to a love story (which is what you meant this piece to be). Good work!!
Naming the piece is entirely up to the composer and what he/she wishes to convey. The listener interprets or feels differently from the composer. Also we have entirely different composers in this thread, and Srikanth is for sure different from Jay. So intital "surprises" as this one isn't a surprise to me at all. Once again, this isn't a negative comment, but just a reaction to a different style IMO. Srikanth would use Timpani for maybe a march, but Jay used it differently. For example, Rahman has used Dholak for Tragedy (Enge enathu kavithai - kkkk), or jealousy (Radha song in Lagaan), while RD and others used it for Bhajans - just an example. Just a different application thats all.
I guess everythings cool now!

Thanks for all your comments everybody!
Naveen:
You're right about the song..it does not have much happening..all it has is a simple melody.
I didnt want to do anything flashy with this song since I thought it'll loose the mood...and for the same reason you cant listen to it when you're in a excited mood...try listening to it when you feel blue and I'm sure the song will be very enjoyable. Its also the simplest one I've done.
Think my songs "memories of a lost world" and "Struggle" are the best I've done musically.
Aditya:
I'm surprised with the Titanic remark...I go to listen to that one soon and find any similarities!! :)
Swamiji:
"The listener interprets or feels differently from the composer" is true but I feel its a challenge for any
composer to bring out the exact emotions in listener that he intends to with the song.
"Lost Love" was my version of the emptiness created by loosing someone you love.

Folks,
Just now my brother pointed out that the first line in 'Baa Baa Bari' Piano solo is wrong.. I don't know how that wrong pulse entered into my brain!
I'll play "pudhu maapillaikku" song once again and upload it later. I need to correct some portions in interludes too.

Jay,
I understand about the mood you have created.
It is very soothing. A Suggestion.. try adding sus4th chords inbetween. (like Csus4 C) it'll sound real cool.. I think you have done this before in one of your earlier compositions..
Have fun!
hihi.. ;)

Here's a warm welcome to both the new composers - Aditya and Jay from a non-music savvy casual listener. I cant help compare the two of them..To Aditya, the main melody is the key. He also seems to play the veena very well..as though he relished each and every note of it. Jay is the cool guy :) ..he is surely not the idli-sambar minimalist guy (for an analogy) he needs to have a full thali meals with 10s of items..so he likes to embellish his compositions with 'layering', I guess,..I also liked the way the instruments joined and parted and the transitions..
I liked both your compositions ..one acoustic but minimal.another synth driven but layered.
(Re: Lost Love..it immediately reminded me of IRs sOgam songs..but there is a Enya'ish/Irish feel to the song. Maybe that is why Aditya got reminded of Titanic.)
(Naveen, I want all your piano compositions, can you make them available on mp3 together or on Napster ?)
