Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."

"KVM would continue to show flashes of his former self in a few films here and there, but he had plenty of films in Telugu."
Mr Saravanan,
In an article on KVM I have read - "what was tamil's loss was telugu's gain". I am yet to hear a below par song by KVM..of course I dont claim to have heard all of his output, but he seems to be an MD who gave quality output right from the start to the twilight of his career. Very few MDs have managed that.
You have quoted the following line:
'Full many a flower is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air’
What wonderful lines, aptly quoted. In case of most of the great singers, IMO, the rare songs have something extra in them as compared to the famous ones.

All of us, let us give a clap for Saravanan. The whole thread makes an interesting reading which I plan to save for my archive.

Saravanan,
Anbukkaathali ennai aadhari is all right. It means(Kaathalaa, Un) anbukkathali ennai aadhari. Whereas the male singer addresses her as anbukkaadhali and requests her to aadharichify him!

Reading Saravanan's posts, it feels like watching a good movie about the life history of VJ's career in TFM as it happened. Wow, words can't express my appreciation and awe for this guy. What an ocean of knowledge! A big applause from all of us here! Saravanan, do you hear us clapping?:-)

AVR, there were many not-so-good songs given by KVM during the 80s in telugu. His output was good qualitywise only when he teamed up with stalwarts like K.Viswanath, Bapu etc who had great appreciation for music and took great care to have good music in their movies. I can list "n" number of movies carrying KVM's songs which can easily be ignored for their bad music! But KVM's songs in Viswanath's movies were made of just pure, undiluted honey!
And with IR firmly backing her, other MDs too would start give her songs in greater numbers.
Very true, listen to "Sapthapadi" by KVM, most of the songs were sung by SJ. Probably one of the rare movies of KVM where SJ was his main singer!

Saravanan,
I have not listened to Akka songs and i am very much tempted to listen to them, as a great fan of MSV and VJ.
Iduthaan Mudal Rathiri... beginning is a great exposition of Desh Ragam (MSVs favorite) and what variations in the song! (listen to the line Anbu Kaadali...).
As some one has observed, MSV was distinctly diff from MSV-TKR days in 70s and i too feel he was not appreciated well for this period.

VJ has sung after a long long time in telugu in the movie "Vachhinavaadu Suryudu". The link is: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/l/XY00000L0W This is a relatively unknown movie, probably a low-budgeted movie. The lyrics are rebellious and revolutionary in nature. VJ's voice sounds the same as it was 10 years ago.
But...the recording is pathetic to say the least. My God! they have butchered the song with their horrible tape.

Oh, by the way, the same tune but with different lyrics was sung by Unnikrishnan - "Sare jahan se achcha" listed right after VJ's song. This song is completely in Hindi/Urdu! Atleast, this song tells us how melodious the tune is and what we missed in VJ's song.
Also, parts of this song reminded me of the Lok seva sanchar parishad commercial in DD long long ago called "Poorab se soorya ugaa" by Kavitha krishnamurthy (lovely rendition by the way).

DIGRESSION:
Saravanan/Naaz/Manisegaran, if you guys can get together and start a new thread (or post in an already existing appropriate thread)where you could list films/songs of MSV right from the beginning, as many as you could remember, chronologically, it would serve as a good info base. You guys have been doing a fabulous job for VJ songs. the PPP page lists only 300+ albums. I am sure there are more. I think its high time newtfmpage carried such infobases on some of these greats. Others who are reading your posts could chip in too. A filmography exists for IR in raajangahm.com but none so far exists for MSV (from what I have seen)

Saravanan,
Further, 'Anbukkaathalaa ennai aadhari' would have been grammatically correct but would have been very jarring in the song!
Now let's go thro' "Kaigalil vaari
vazhangiya Paari-
thandhaano nee thandha maadhiri?" ,i.e., the heroine seems to have a slight doubt whether Pari was as lavish as the hero in donating!
Here, I remember how our friends in college used to discuss how (and why!)
Na. Kamarasan has brought down Pari Vallal in order to praise the hero ( in this case, MGR!).

Vijay,
I very much agree with you. As a great fan of MSV , i asked MSV himself for such a list / collection , when i met him. Infact, he referred some rasigargal names for such a list. I am doubtful whether a such an organised list exists for MSV. It would be a great effort.
Saravanan/ Others,
How do we take it forward?

Saravanan,
When i am writing this, i am listening to ' Bharathi Kannamma... ' from 'Ninaithale Inikkum'. What a wonderful song by SPB- VJ!! Beginning music/humming is simply gret. Saravanan, expecting when are u going to write about this song.

Cinema virumbi: It's not ? but ! enna puriyalaiyaa? The heroine (having only heard of paari) sees the hero's giving as a visible/contemporary embodiment of paari's gift giving - nee thanthathu pOla thaan paariyum kaigaLil vaari vazhanginaan pOlum!

Kik,
I fully agree! Tamil is such a beautiful language that there is enough scope for the lyricist to give your explanation and defend himself against any accusation of defaming Pari Vallal! Of course, "Kaigalil vaari
vazhangiya Paari-
thandhaanE nee thandha maadhiri" would have been far less controversial, but definitely less attractive, because the ambiguity adds to the charm in the existing song!

Saravanan,
Just now, I happened to go thro' some of the old pages in this thread. "Enakkenna Manakkavalai?" is from "Sorgaththil Thirumanam", a Ramanna movie with Latha & perhaps Sowcar as her mother. I remember to have read Ramanna saying that he witnessed a fight in an aircraft between a mother and a daughter over a sensitive and complex family matter. After coming down, he wrote the story for this film! He only changed "Vimanaththil Sandai" into "Sorgaththil Thirumanam"! For, after all (acoording to him!), Vimanam and Sorgam & Sandai and Thirumanam are synonyms!
"Sorgaththin Thirappu Vizha", came much later, may be 1977, named after the famous song in "Pallandu Vazhga" (1975).

Cinema Virumbi:
"Kaigalil vaari
vazhangiya Paari-
thandhaanE nee thandha maadhiri"
thandhaanE denotes some kind of personal knowledge/witnessing which doesn't make sense - unless it's a declarative statement (like paattum naanE, bhaavaamum naanE). That would not suit a newly-wed bride on her wedding night. But, you're right - it's ambiguous and that served MGR's political ambitions well. vaali mentions in his naanum intha nooRRaandum that MGR was upset that the song moonRu thamizh piRanthuthum unnidamO, nee moovEnthar vazhi vantha mannavanO was written for someone else's movie (written by vaali for piLLayO piLLai or something like that - the debut of one of MK's sons).

1976 continued---
We had commenced 1976 with VJ’s songs for MSV and we will continue to recollect her songs for the Mellisai Mannar in that year:
45. Kodi vitta siru mullai- Mayor Meenakshi- MSV
Another KR Vijaya padam, one among the many wherein she is the chief protagonist and the hero (Jai in this case) is a mere dummy. Many of these films were produced by KRV herself! Indeed if we scrutinise the 70s, we find that she was a hero among the heroines, and easily the greatest crowd puller. Many films did brisk business on her name alone!
MM had KRV in the role of a scavenger who rises to the high office of the Mayor, much to the dismay of the wily VKR whom she crosses swords with frequently. MM continues to appear with a broom and bucket, lest she should forget her humble roots! As it happens, her husband, Jai, is in the enemy camp. After many predictable twists and turns, all is well that ends well.
Another solo is the eternally appealing ‘Evalo oru pennaam’ by PS.
‘Kodi vitta’ is a song preaching socialism, perhaps KRV singing to a small child, with the child responding with a mouth organ. I vaguely remember, many reels later, the child being kidnapped and held in a high-rise building and playing the same tune on the mouth organ to attract the attention of KRV, who is passing below- a la King Richard and John the minstrel, or Daisy Irani and Raja Sulochana for an inspiration nearer home!
Kodi vitta siru mullai malarey
Ezhil kovilil sirikkindra silaye
Ulagai padaithavan Iraivan
Athil oorai eikkum oruvan—
Simple catchy lyrics- V J reciting the opening lines in prose form is an aural delight!
46.Thirumurugan Aruginiley- Mayor Meenakshi- Jayachandran-MSV
(Duets 1 page 2)
Perhaps the first song of the pair who would give ever so many dreamy duets in the future- Jayachandran and Vani. I always feel that Jayachandran was VJ’s best singing partner- somehow there was magic in the air whenever the two sang together---
Another popular duet from the film was ‘Kanden kalyana pen pondra megham’-SPB-PS.
While ‘Kanden kalayana’ was by Jai-KRV, ‘Thirumurugan aruginiley’ was filmed on the second pair- Vijayakumar and Sripriya.
This song begins with a humming by PJ & VJ.
PJ: Thirumurugan aruginiley Valli kurathi
VJ: Nee poomaalai pon oonjal pottal vaaren kannala,
Vaaren kaannala, ethirpaarthe ninnala
VJ’s charming repetition of the first line with subtle emphasis on the last syllables of the first two words is memorable, as also her rendition of the lines ‘Valai karam mella thottu vayaadum pothu, ananda leelai aramba velai athu thane’
47. Irundhaal ozhunga iru- Mayor Meenakshi- MSV
I don’t remember this song much-its ages since I heard it last. Was it MSV whose voice is also heard in this song? I very vaguely remember the admonishing line ‘Gammunnu kada’!
Can C V or someone shed more light on this song?
48. Kalyanamey- Lalitha- MSV
Valampuri Somanathan’s remake of ‘Kora Kaagaz’ stg. an over the hill Gemini Ganesh and Sujatha. It was Sujatha’s scintillating performance, which was the saving grace of the film.
Sujatha is the rich daughter of Calcutta Viswanathan and Sukumari. She falls in love with GG, a poor lecturer in her college. She adamantly marries him in the face of stiff opposition from her status conscious mother. Then the usual problems in such situations crop up- for poor as GG may be, he values dignity and self-respect. And the constant, veiled and sometimes direct barbs of Suku do nothing to help the situation—leading to their separation- and several years and heartburns later they patch up.
Their problems start on their first night itself and GG is understandably miffed. This song has Lalitha trying to pacify him and coaxing him to come to bed to consummate their marriage, not in so many words, of course! Watch VJ clothe even seduction with a winsome veneer of dignity- Can any one else even dream of it? Class always shows, and how!!
Kalyaaname oru pennoduthaan-
Ithil yaar enna sonnaalum oor enna sonnaalum
Un vaazhvu ennoduthaan!
Thaayin veedu, pennai petru, thaarai vaarkkum varai
Pennin veedu, kaalakaalam, thalaivan azhaikkum varai
Pallikkoodam thaayodu mudiyum,
Palli mudiyathandro—
Again VJ’s caressing play while whisperingly reciting the line ‘Odal konjam naduvil vandhaal koodal sugamaavathu’ is a treat to listen! Hark at her bashful ‘Indha vilakkam edharkkaaga chonnen- indru edhaavathu-hmmhmm- indru edhaavathu--?’ That ‘hmm hmm’ alone is enough to do the trick! What an accomplished playback actress is our VJ!
49. Sorgathiley mudivaanathu- Lalitha-SPB-MSV
(Duets 2 page 3)
The 25th Wedding anniversary celebration of Calcutta Visu and Sukumari- song by Sujatha and her brother Kamal. In fact, the HMV record of ‘Lalitha’ shows a suited and coated Kamal playing the piano, with a wigged Sujatha looking heavily made up and pensive.
GG, as usual, is conspicuously absent at the party, and Sujatha is beginning to feel the rot that has set in- she subtly voices her disillusionment in poignant words.
SPB gets off to a lively start:
Sorgathiley mudivaanathu
Sondhathile nilayaanathu
Vaazhnaalellam valamaanathu
Ivar vaazhvu thaan vaazhvenbathu—
VJ’s entry changes the mood of the song, as Lalitha pours forth her despondency:
Deepathil ondru karpooram ondru
erigindrathingey ondraaga nindru
ellamum kovil ellamum deepam
erigindra deepam silar kanda laabam
eriyaatha deepam, silar seitha paavam
Nayagan nayagi baavam kaanbathu kovilil kaangindra kaatchi
Naan athai kanden verethai solven, thadukindrathey manasaatchi—
VJ’s slow and sorrow drenched rendition of the line ‘eriyaatha deepam silar seitha paavam’ is truly heartrending! Can even the stone-hearted amongst us remain unmoved when hearing the emotional appeal in the lines ‘Ther kodu vandhen, silai matrum illai, seer thandha veetil thunai matrum illai’?
50. Naan oru vagayinil- Oru Kodiyil Iru Malargal- MSV
I have not seen the film, but I have a rough idea that Jaishankar plays Sujatha’s brother, and Srikanth plays her pair. The two versions- (both appealing in their own distinct way)- of ‘Kannanin sannathiyil’ strengthen my belief about the story line.
This solo by VJ seems to have come a distant third after these two songs, as far as popularity goes. Yet, it is another gem from the MSV-VJ team. In a way it is like ‘Chandira pirai paarthen’ – the heroine relates the story of her marriage in lovely, meaningful lyrics.
Going by the words, her life should be filled with happiness, but there is a feeling of pathos in the song- I wonder why?
Naan oru vagayinil koduthu vaithen
Nalla kanavanin nizhal kandu
adaikkalam avan endru
naan—pala kanavugal padaithu vaithen
Kanmalarndha poonkodi
Kai odindha painkili
than kurayai koorinaal
Thalaivanidam vendinaal--
Penn paarkka vandhavan
kann vazhiye pesinaan
pon maname selvamaai
poo mudikka enninaan
Naalu vagai vedamum
Naadaswara geethamum
Osai idum naalile
Maalai itten tholile
Aasaiyennum deepamum
Anbu magal roopamum
Aanazhagan kovilil
amarndhadhamma kaavalil
Paal nilavin saatchiyaai
Then nilavin kaatchigal
eerudalum paarthathu
or iravil nerndhathu--
Then kudithu oindhathu
Poovidhazhgal kaaindhathu
Naan paditha mandiram
Kodi inbam vaaindhathu
A ballad with romantic lyrics and VJ bring life and meaning to each word. Hark at her taking off in the second ‘Naan’ and softening in the repetition of ‘Koduthu vaithen’ -
Indha paadalai kettavargal koduthu vaithavargal!
- More to come on VJ, MSV and 1976--
