I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

If it cools your heart, it was ARR who did the music for my ad.commercial during my writer stint in India (I've interacted with him in his "dileep" avatar.) I doubt, he'd remember me though (it's over a dozen plus years since I have seen him.)
I am trying to make this happen through my "old" contacts in India. Some western magazines (glossies to tell you the truth, but hey, they pay!!) have expressed interest in a feature on him. I'd be delighted to chat him up - and would (if it were to happen) solicit you for a tete-a-tete before all that. (say, yes?)

I vaguely recall a song by VJ in Visu's "Rajathandhiram" Could you please tease it out for me?
And -
Would you by any chance have a MP3 file of VJ's "Chellakkuzhandhaigale Thullum Vasanthangale" from My Dear Kuttichchaaththan? I've been seeking this song for many years, but to no avail.

Many thanks for the links. My past experience with "coolgoose" has been less cool and more goose - that site redefines "slow" in a truly evocative way. But I'll still give it a shot and see if things have changed...maybe it would be different this time around as the word "kuttichchaaththaan" is there in the title? :-)

I tried to access coolgoose.com
There were two options: Listen or Download. I tried both (intervals apart) and both yielded the same result: nothing.
Have you had any luck downloading the song from CG?
Could you please tell me if I am being impatient or if the link is really defunct? Appreciate it.
A J Rajkumar -
As far as I am aware, Vani Jairam is still a tamizh singer who is singing tamizh songs - only not tamizh "film" songs. Her most recent film outing (2 years ago)was in Kannada - for the film "Neela." The music was composed by Vijayabhaskar. The songs from this film are available at musicindiaonline.com

Most of the time coolgoose works for me just fine. I normally download (listen option is tempting at first, but with the constant "buffering-please wait" thing, you will settle with the download option) the songs. They do take sometime, but you need to be a little patient, just a little! I don't seem to have any problem downloading

Check out MIO Malayalam for a P. Madhuri and Vani Jairam duet "Raagalaapam..." in the film Geetham Sangeetham. It seems to be a 90s films, I am not sure, though. It is a pleasant classical song composed by Raveendran.

Thanks for the ref. All links at MIO seem to be down or "not found." I hope they find themselves soon.

Thanks for posting the links two the two good songs.
G. Ragavan -
Could you please tell me if the CD has a title or is it just called VJ Songs? Which label? I could search and see if it is available at some outlet on the net.
Thanks in advance.
yvs mani -
I will follow your instructions and be patient. If it still doesn't work, I will let you know and you can upload the song in the breifcase. Thanks for the offer.

Have you heard these VJ songs: "Naan Padum Ragam" and "Ilagaigal Meedhum...Panivizhum Kalam" (VJ/SPB)
The first one is from Yaaro Ezhudhiya Kavidhai and the latter from Kulirgala Megangal (?). I thought you might enjoy discovering these sometime (if you haven't already, that is.)

Thanks for the title and the list of songs. I now know it is a "merger" of two audio cassettes that were issued in the late-80s/early90s called "Pongum Kadalosai" and "Popular Hits of Vani Jairam"
I have both the tapes, now I just have to feed them into the computer, change them into MP3 files and burn a CD - and "Megame Megame" en kaiyil!
What a list of songs! Just solos - but all 17 hits!
And all within a short period of 5-8 years. Of course, there are many more one can add to this list, but even as a sample it proves that VJ is perhaps the only singer after PS to line up a list of such memorable solos.
Kaumudi -
There were a few typos in my earlier message. The most important among them (for your purposes) is "Ilaigal Meedhum Malargal Meedhum Panivizhum Kalam"
- it is from Kulirgala Megangal. And the first one is a solo "Naan Padum Ragam Anandha Ragam Thaan" from YEK. These are available at;
www.vanijairam.com

Naaz: I could not find VJs Isonipashad anywhere. Do you have a link? I will listen. Actually, I have no reason to doubt what the experts say about her Sanskrit. Carnatic vocalists generally do well in Sanskrit. More on that as it relates to Ashtapathi: You provided a quote from a Mohana Rao where he implied that Ashtapathi is popular in the north. That is incorrect. I have been attending Hindustani classical concerts for a long time. I never heard Ashtapathi sung by anyone. Even Lakshmi Shankar, a South Indian, does not sing Ashtapathi. I also have a good collection of hindustani classical from mid 60s. No Ashtapathi in any of them. I have some devotional albums from the north. No Ashtapathi there either. If it was popular in the north, it would have found a place in the concerts and albums. There are a number of reasons for that. First, hindustani vocalists do not feel comfortable with sanskrit. It is always hindi. Jasraj sings some sanskrit compositions, the only exception I know of. The aversion for/avoidance of Sanskrit goes back to the days of Moghul rule. Hindustani music was chamber or court music. The moghuls did not know sanskrit and the singers had to sing in common languages (braja bhasha). In my opinion the chamber music was to create a romantic mood for the rulers in the evening. If the rulers knew sanskrit and understood Ashtapthi, they would have asked for it every evening. Remember that Jayadeva was accused of crossing the line. Some even called it obscene. I think they meant erotic. In any case, singing in common languages, hindi and its variants, took hold. They did not need Bharathi,Kalki et al to tell them to sing in a language undertood by everyone. They use Ashtapathi in Odissi, but the ragas seem to be carnatic. The hindustani format also does not allow thukkadas as carnatic format does. Even if there is time for thukkada, they sing bhajans from Meera, Kabirdas, Surdas et al. That also depends on where the vocalists come from. Marathi vocalist will sing abhangs and Bengali will sing Rabindra sangeet.
Carnatic concert form is well known. About thirty years back, the concert almost invariably started with Vathapi Ganapathim, a sanskrit composition. The format always included a piece by Dikshithar who composed almost everything in Sanskrit, a piece from Thyagaraja who composed almost everything in Sanskrit and a few in Sanskrit and a piece from Shyama Shastri who composed in Sanskrit, Tamil and Telugu. Therefore, the carnatic vocalist felt at home with Sanskrit and sang Ashtapathi with ease. It also has to with the bhajan traditions of Tanjore/Kumbakonam, Mylapore, Triplicane and other places. The bhajans included Tevaram,Tiruppavai, tiruppugazh, Ashtapathi,Krishna leela tharangini, marathi abhangs,Meera bhajans, Surdas bhajans, Kabir bhajans etc. For some reason Rabindra sangeeth does not find a place. What was sung in bhajans moved to thukkada secion in Carnatic concerts. That is the reason Ashtapathis are very popular in the south. I have recordings by five different vocalists, all South Indian. I am yet to find one by a hindustani musician. Just to be sure, I checked MIO. I did not find any. If you look at the Sanskrit devotional section in MIO,it is all by Carnatic vocalists except for Jasraj.
I was not sure whethter this is the place to post my comments. Take it as a response to the quote from Mohana Rao.
Cheers.
