Vazhipokkan, a couple of questions for you since you are the "insider" here :-)
1. How much is Bala's involvement in extracting tunes out of MDs? Songs in his films, although not bad, dont seem to be anything exemplary. That applies to Sethu as well as Nandha. Apparently, it looks like he doesnt seem to be caring as much as say a Shankar or Mani Rathnam when it comes to songs. (BGM is a different matter. )
2. In another thread you have said that since some songs with bad pronunciation become hits MDs are willing to use more and more singers like Udit etc. But even "Vaseegara", "Un Samayil araiyil", "Kannodu kaanabathellam" and scores of other songs with better pronunciation have become hits. So who is to blame here? the MD who thinks that the audience like ONLY those songs that are mauled pronunciation-wise? or the audience?

Guys..I have been little critical of YSR earlier..He was just composing a rhythm pattern, looping it and adding a melody to it all the time ..Or atleast that was how it looked to me. But now in Pop-Carn he seems to have gotten off that beaten track. Like Peter Pan (just get to a flying school my friend ..around $70/$80 only per hour :)) says..he has matured and is more confident now...Yes..confidence is the key - we all can do better if we had more confidence..The use of WCM style orchestrations is also probably a signal he is sending to his Guru (who else but ARR :)) that he is coming of age..The last few films only one or two songs were good in each..But then again this might be a business strategy (of doing more films and drowning out the competition). And yes, I do think, after ARR he is the best bet we have in TFM..

Hi Vijay,
Bala is a VERY DETAILED person, in everything that he does. He wants perfection in everything (of course, per his scale). He does the same thing for music too. ALL the singers are decided by him. Of course Yuvan made the suggestions but the final decision is always Bala's. I personally feel that's how it should be, because Director is everything in a movie. Everybody else assists him to get the final product.
But, Bala doesn't have a musical background. But he has a good taste (thanks to Balumahendra). He went to such a detail that he made yuvan to list all the instruments being used in the song. He spends lots of time and gives atmost effort like shankar and mani, if not more, in doing everything and that applies to music too.
(A vaani jayaram song was recorded and rejected.
Early version of 'mun paniyaa', which was a duet, was recorded individually with Sandhya, Harini, and S.Janaki and all were rejected because he wasn't satisfied. Later it was changed to a SPB solo. Now you can understand he makes no compromise on his product's standard, be it music or acting or even a small set property)
Comparing Shankar's and Mani's songs with Bala's... Shankar and Mani use ARR. Period ! ;-)
(Prior to ARR, mani used IR when he was at his best). Bala didn't have much say in Sethu, as it was his first film and the MD was IR. Truely speaking, Nandhaa is his first film with full control on the MD, and songs like Mun paniyaa, Kalli adi kalli, Oraayiram are not bad for that, right ?!
(Just compare the style of YSR in nandhaa and any of his earlier movie. It is 100% bala's effort)

Vazhipokkan, thanks. What about question no 2? :-)
I guess the difference between Mani/Shankar and Bala is that the former are shrewd businessmen and they dont mind just the albums alone selling well even before the release of the film, as it brings additional publicity for the film. I guess Bala is more of a songs-for-situations kind of guy. He perhaps doesnt want the songs to distract from the main narrative. He would probably even do a film without songs if he thought the songs were not necessary. I am just guessing here. I heard Mani made Alaipayuthe and decided to add songs at the last minute probably for some publicity.
"Of course Yuvan made the suggestions but the final decision is always Bala's."
I think the MD should have atleast an equal say if not more in choice of singers as he is more knowledgable and in a better position to decide which tunes would suit which singers etc.
"Nandhaa is his first film with full control on the MD, and songs like Mun paniyaa, Kalli adi kalli, Oraayiram are not bad for that, right ?!
"
They were not bad by YSR's standards. But then they werent anything different or outstanding when compared against other TFM songs as a whole. And I felt YSR was not the best choice for a movie of Nandha's seriousness and depth, although he didnt do a bad job . It required perhaps a more "mature" composer. Just IMO.

vijay : you are 100% right about bala. He does no compromise to include any commercial value which may distract the flow of the movie (say, a 'shakalaka baby'). Having said that, though 'kaana karunguyilE' was a sooper dooper hit, Bala regretted for being forced by Kandhasamy to have that commercial song in the picture...
Going with more mature MD for Nandhaa...
It is very unlikely that Bala will go out of the Raja family for music. I had already mentioned the reason for not going with IR for Nandhaa. If he gets into ego clash with IR in Pithamahan he will go with YSR or KR in his next film. I won't be surprised if he tries Bhava for one of his future films ;-) but not a VS or Ramani or ARR.
Question no 2 : There is a tendency in Kollywood. If something becomes a hit, people close their eyes and try to reproduce it. If 'dhil' is a hit, every vijay, ajith and prasanth wants to give a stunt film. If 'thulluvadhO iLamai' is a hit, there will be 10 more GummaaLams. Bottomline... Kollywood tries to retain 'Winning combos'. This is mainly because, it is easier to convince the Distributors with a previous hit formula. And as you can see, more frequently than not, songs sung by northies are becoming hits (just compare the ratio).

vazhippOkkan, good explanation! nandha's songs were quite different from other YSR's films, and it is commendable for a non-MD (Bala) to bring it out from YSR. kaLLi adi kaLLi was a great song, IMO. I am not sure about pithamagan, with IR as the MD. IR probably will sneak in a couple of his trademark numbers, and the film may not have Bala's touch.
You are also right about the hit formula. This deepavaLi's releases, bhagavathy, ramana and villain, were all action movies, just because a few other action movies were hits earlier.

Sethu is indeed a great film but nandha is an average product with more "artificial" events, there is no natural flow in it(screen play). In vikatan Bala says nandha is the voice of Elam people, somewhat true but again it's not a "complete" film. Another hyped movie kanathil muthamittal by MR which talks about elam is also kind of "arai vEkkadu". If there is one who could handle this effectively in movie that is Balu Mahendra.

What a great piece of reading! To see a man of the stature of Balu expressing his helplessness in not being able to make even a steady assured income of 5000 rs. a month.. :(
truly the most disturbing and content-rich piece of work i've read in a long time in thamizh.. i was instantly reminded of the song in his 'marupadiyum' - ellorukkum nalla neram...
irony, sadness, frustration... oru uNarchikkuviyal
