My reaction was indeed based on Bala's interview in the latest Vikatan! Such passionate interest in cinema is rare and music directors should consider themselves lucky to be associated with such directors. Ilayaraja has more than 3 decades of experience in the industry and would probably be more adept in choosing projects with newcomers. He would have chosen a few dud newcomers too, in the beginning of his career, but I consider IR a born-genius, so his level isnt equal to any other composer's level.
PS: Note that I assume even born-genius to face burnout, going by IR's present day output :-)

NagaS,
PopCorn is definetly tehe a good and more importantly different album ...I agree with all of ur comments.. esp hariharn has damaged the song by singing with agood voice ,but bad sruti .....Also somehow i did not feel the SPB song was the best ..

- Bala is a Hardcore fan of IR.
- IR promoted Sethu big time once the first copy was made and there were no buyers.
- The same IR, asked 5 lakhs for singing one song in Nandhaa (fyi: SPB gets 40K for a song), just because the MD chance was not given to him but to his son.
- Bala had some difference of opinion with IR during Sethu (in choosing singers and tunes) that's why he went with YSR for his second movie Nandhaa.
- Considering the strong personalities (a.k.a. Ego :-) of IR & Bala, I am sure they will have major diff of opinion in pithaamahan too...

vazhipokkan,
This 5 lakhs figure is, I think not true. He got the money like any professional singer.(That was YSR's comment).
I don't think IR is such a fool to ask such a high amount that too for his voice.

Ivar than 'finance' paNNinaar!
When he could not give 1 lakh, it came down to 10, 000 and then realized that he was bankrupt, offered a thEngA moodi and IR gave it back to him!!

Bala about Pithamagan:
After Ilayaraja agreed to do the background score, I decided to go
ahead with this film. I don't know what I would have done if he
hadn't said yes.
Does that mean music is very important in the film?
Music is the most important ingredient of the film. Remember, I am
talking about the background score.

More interesting inside scoop about that incident... ;-)
IR sang 'ammaa endraalE' for 50,000 Rs.
After a few weeks he was called for singing 'engengO kaalgaL sellum', but the payment was never discussed. Production team assumed that it is going to be the same salary (as the previous song). IR encashed this ;-)
Right after the recording, in the recording theater itself, IR demanded 5 lakhs. Initially it sounded like he was kidding, but later realized that he was indeed serious. When he was told that it is too huge an amount, he said, 'then keep the song for free' and left the recording theater.
The next day, he called and asked not to use the song unless he is paid atleast 3 lakhs ;-)
After further negotiation, it was finally settled at 1 lakh !

Here's my initial review of YSR's 'Pop Corn' (or is it 'Pop-Carn' as in carnival?):
The bit song, 'Amma IngE vA vA' is probably situational. Mohanlal's voice has been wrongly credited to Nasser in Thaalam.com. One can't help feel the absence of SPB in this song!
'PoikkAl kudirayile' (starts with Hariharan's lines 'Andha Seema Thora(i) PAttu') is an interesting composition from YSR.
It has a Tamil and Gujarati folk flavor, and has the potential of becoming a hit Dandiya song in next year's Dusshera (if dubbed in Hindi or Gujarati)
Who's the female singer who sings with Manikka Vinayakam? Initially she sounded like Sujatha, but I had my doubts, she sounded like Chitra.
'KAdhalAki Kasindhadu' is a novel number, an innovative composition that doesn't follow the typical film song pattern. Only SPB would have done justice to this tongue-twisting lyrics, considering the unusually fast pace of the tune, and the emotions he brings out in his rendition. The handling of the WCM orchestration and the scale changes proves that YSR is maturing as a composer, who understands the nuances of complex compositions. Way to go Yuvan!!
'KaNiyan Poongundran..Yaadum Oore' by Hariharan in Raga Sindhu Bhairavi (initially sounded like TOdi) is rendered in Carnatic style, with violin, Mridangam and Kanjira accompaniments. The pallavi is unusually structured and hence will take a while for the tune to grow on you. Probably a situational stage song,w here the singer attemps to please the so-called 'masss' by transitioning (abruptly) to a folk beat. Overall, a decent attempt, although no patch on similar IR songs in the past (there are dozens of them)
I especially loved the Theme Music. YSR shows exceptional talent here.
'Naan Vaichen Laysa' is quite good, with a dominant middle-eastern flavor (which dominated many Feroze Khan film songs and ARR's 'Tu hi tu Satrangee Re')
PoovellAm pArAttum is an okay song. No innovations, novelty here, except for some new 'sound' in the interludes and the use of trumpets. It even sounds like 'O Kick eRudhey' of Padayappa at times. You'll never know, this song will probably be promoted the most by the producers in TV channels!
'Vaitha Poove' has an amazing sax prelude that grabs your attention right away. And you are in for some surprise! The prelude turns out to be longer than expected, with a long, amazing string orchestration followed by a piano piece which blends into the lines rendered by the female vocalist (some North Indian import?) and then the male vocalist. The vocal part is very short and this is almost an instrumental number and IMO, an excellent composition that showcases YSR's creativity and originality! This song is worth multiple listenings!
Overall, a good album with many interesting, innovative songs and a couple of ordinary ones.
My Picks:
'Vaitha Poove' and 'kAdhalAgi Kasindhu'

A couple of things about the SPB song, 'kAdhalAgi Kasindadhu':
1. Who's the female singer?
2. The lyrics were especially very good in this song. Who's the lyricsit?
