Deepavali - The Festival of Lights - is around the corner, to be exact, just a week away. Being one of the most important festivals of Hindus throughout the the world, it's the season to be jolly and happy. I am reviving this thread to dedicate Deepavali songs to our fellow-posters. Use your creativity as much as you want! But try to limit the songs to only those which has the Deepavali flavour in them.

DheepAvaLI!
The crowded Ranganathan St.,Usman Road, etc.,lighted Pondy Bazaar, Brisk sales of everything everywhere!! Oh! Madras is fun!
All new releases, be it dresses, sweets, crackers, movies, songs, (except Doordarshans diwali songs...), were and are enjoyable. The parade of cine stars on the TV with staginess,
however, could help you kill the time indoors. The thick fog of "pattAs pugai" each year on that day could still ignite 100,000 thoughts of childhood days in Madras.
Right from the "touser' days to the much hesitant "arumbu meesai" diwali days, each and every diwali day had something in store. Oh!!
Dad's purchase of crackers always seemed to be less than those of friend's purchase!! So, all those "sutta panam" from mom's kitchen cabinets
(which never invoked the scruples), from Dads pant pockets (yes, there was fear however, and, bills of larger size invoked conscience, fear,
appearance of Dad's face in your "manakkaN", etc.,
went into the purchase of "kuruvi vedis", rockets, parachutes, etc., and were thievishly tucked under various boxes, cots, trunks, etc., These
"arsenal" would surface two or three days before the "night of colors" and go into oblivion within no time...Oh! what a feeling!! (Comments
from friends: "InnAdA indha varsham orE kalakkal mAdhiri theriyudhE" and "Dey, innA yeduthu yeduthu vudarE") And these comments would please me head to toe, and I would fly into cloud nine in the midst of the cracker smoke that would envelop Madras for a day or two!!
More than the crackers, the release of "new dresses" was real "Diwali" and homecoming!("pudhu dressA?" "nallA irukku" sort of comments, from neighbouring mAmis[:)] and mAmAs, etc., Exchange of sweets, collection of sweets, etc., There were houses that I longed to visit with sweets for obvious reasons, and there were houses that I used to avoid delivering sweets fearing the endless confabulation by mAmis and mAmAs!!!
Diwali day was the only day men and women of all ages never hesitate to wear the most expensive dresses of the year in spite of flying arsenal,
and intimidating cracker rackets!! Most legalised catwalk of pomposity, yet, welcome!! A real colorful pageantry that could tickle hearts of
many in many different ways!! Omigod!! Some Diwali days were washed out, thanks to "kuRaindha aLavu kAtRazhuththa thAzhvu mandalam" or simply put,a depression in the bay!! An always dry Madras, that perennially longs for copious water supply, never likes a washed out Diwali!!
For, such rains would wash out the cracker sales, new dress parades, and a lot more!!!
Waking to the noise of crackers, lending the head to mom's hands for "ennai snAnam", loading the crackers at the vantage place for "assault", dressing up with increased heartbeats, the oneupmanship of mind to "beat" the neighbours, friends [surprisingly, those guys
would "beat" me in the race by bursting the crackers first, wearing old pants, dhotis, munda banians, even before oil bath, much to my chagrin:(], ...
The greeting in the wee hours was never "dheepAvaLi vAzhthukkaL"! It was always "Happy Deepavali"!! May be Thamizh nAdu alone follows
"Happy Deepavali" I presume! This was one of the three days (besides new year day, pongal)the known and the unknown would exchange "Happy Deepavali" Oh! Madras!
In the place where I lived, Diwali noon was full of activities...Guys around would meet and go from one door to the other making "hundi collections"!!
In a matter of few hours we would be walking in Anderson Street, Broadway, trying to catch hold of the biggest, longest "saram". We would get
a "kuyil" brand 10000 wala saram for 185 rupees! We would march back home with exuberance!! Oh! What an accomplishment!! At 7.30 pm on Diwali day,
just after the "seydhi surukkam' by shObana ravi, 10000 saram would be ignited by the most luckiest guy in our flats by way of toss!! In less than
5 minutes, the lengthy "saram" would vanish leaving trash, smoke and "that" pattAsu odour!!
The retreat at the end of the day would be greeted with "What? Is it all over? Or do you have some more out there?!" by parents!! But, it was all over!! Over till next DeepAvaLi!! Till then, the dawdling thoughts about the sweets, dresses, nAdhaswaram in the wee hours, occasional racket of rockets,"oosivedi's", etc., would be the makeweights!!

My dear old friend Gopal - A very happy Deepavali to you, cp & Shyamanthak and thanks for taking us on a ride through your experiences of the bygone days. Naturally, it is important that the young of today are also brought up through this experience.
I have promised myself never to "spare" my children this beautiful cultural experience. :-)))

Everyone here seems to have said what I wanted to. Infact Gopal may be late in bursting crackers but certainly he beat me in posting the Diwali days story. I think most of us have experienced similar feelings when it comes to Deepavali. Two other things that I miss and were probably missed out is that "laygyam" the first thing to get into the stomach before u have anything. The next day when we were allowed to come to school in deepavali dress. Wow sure that everybody wanted to be at thier best. Wow those days.. I was thinking about it the whole of yesterday night and coudlnt get sleep. Sure Ill miss it hard, whether u celebrate it or not the festive mood, the smog etc are still there in ur heart. I also used to wonder how all those PTC drivers would feel when they had to work on that day when everybody else is at home bursting crackers, watching TV, eating sweets. Though u may get another day of but would that in anyway compensate "the " day. Not to mention the special programmes from "Pudhu pada paadalgal", "mangala isai", "the patti mandram( usually Solomom Pappayya )", "malarum ninaivugal" and defenitely my favourite "Thalaivar" S.Ve. Shekar drama.
With the same festive mood and spirit

May be Some TV, Doordarshan, Sun TV etc should organise a "Ungal choice special for all those who work on Deepavali".

gopal's remarks about deepavali experiences took me down memory lane. to think of the diwali of present, i feel choked with nostalgia because there is hardly any celebration of the kind we had about 15-20 years back.
from the time we used to get the cloth material and race to the tailor who will talk about a month's time for delivery and bargain with him so that the pant (Even minus some inner finetuning and sometimes without the zipper) and the shirt is ready latest by the diwali eve. and inspite of the fact that they used to be so badly stitched, one used to wear it non-stop during the day, the next day to school and very frequently until the next occassion (say birthday) turned up.
i certainly remember my diwali days of putting a rocket in a phenoil bottle on the terrace and set it alight. the bottle used to stink for days together and was never allowed to be brought inside home. the rockets used to careen, hit a tree, take a downward plunge and hit some car in the neighbourhood (there weren't many those times).
there was competition between guys on who is the most daring with the pattassu. atom bomb used to be the toughie and anybody who tosses the a.b at the last moment would be a hero for atleast a couple of days. then there will be guys who will be so frightened of lighting a charam that the oodhuvathi will just come close to the thiri and then withdrawn. this used to go on for some times till an impatient podisu takes the charam in the hands, lights it and throws it around.
wonderful days! can see them only in the mannakann even in madras.
anaivarukkum iniya deepavali vaazhuthukkaL!
