Hi!
I just want to know if any music directors have a fad for a particular Ragam. The one MD who comes to my mind is ARR who uses Kapi,Ananda Bhairavi,Shankarabharanam and the like in almost all his films.

Vijay,
I donot think you got my point.'Sridevi envazhvil' is a beautiful composition and IR
being a film md is entitled to use as many 'Nishadhams ' as he wants.Since you mentioned that as an example of IR's great handling of hindolam I pointed out the use of kalyana vasantham in the song.
Going by your arguement,MSV's immortal number
'UNNIDATHIL ENNAI
KODUTHEN' in AVALUKKENDRU OR MANAM is an incomparable piece where the pallavi is pure hindolam in all its romantic glory. The shehnai piece in that song even beats the 'haunting ' flute melody of ARR in Uyire uyire.
There are so many ragas which MSV has used in their chaste form and mixing with other ragas.
'Mazhaikkalamum panikkalamum' is another good example where the pallavi is a beautiful hamsadhvani piece.
Listen to 'kannan varum velai idhu' ,you can hear
the authentic kalyani yet with great imagination
and novelty. The interlude in sithar and flute is a great piece by itself in kalyani.
Apart from the Master md's compositions,IR has some great songs too, purely on classical ragas..
like Hamsadhwani in "MAYILE MAYILE" by SPB and
Jensy and "chinna kannan" in Reethi gowlai(the
multi track flute piece--just great).

Srini.. A truly classy example...
'Kannan varum neramithu' from "nenjirukkum varai", another classy MSV creation in Kalyani..Chithirai maatham pournami neram. In fact "Nenjirukkum" varai had great songs in Sinthu Bhairavi (enge neeyo naanum ange), Madyamavathi ("Muthukkalo Kangal") , Vahula bharanam ("Poo mudippaal intha poonguzhali"...at least most of the song). Well MSV is MSV..SUPER..
Anyway, what raaga is "azaithaal podum" by SJ from the same movie set to ?
His other favorite raagaas where Sudha dhanyasi(Neeye unakku, thottaal poomalarum) , abheri (poomalayil, malligai, kangak enge) , bhagesri (mayakkum maalai, most of kangale..kaathal seivathai etc) and most derivatives of Karahrapriya.

Sorry folks for digressing.Srini.... I see that you have a good ear for MSVs Shehnai pieces...what about those in "Aalayamaniyin osayai naan ketten", "Nilave ennidam", "kannile enna undu kangal thaan ariyum", "Ennai yaar endru"

sriram,
yes.The shehnai in 'kannile enna undu' with the
thabla is unbelievable. So are the other pieces you have mentioned.
I tried to decipher the raga of 'ninaithal podum'
It is a toughie..I donot know the name of the raga. But the ascending and descending sequence looks like this..
s r2g1g2pd2s and the reverse.Let me know if you find out the name of the raga..May be Ramaswamy Gireesan can help.

srini,
I am not the expert that I would like to be. I havent even learnt carnatic music properly - everything is just kELvi gnAnam. Anyway, I cant recall the song 'ninaiththAl pOthum' or 'azhaiththAl pOthum'.

Sriram Lakshman,
Are not the songs "mutthukkalo kangal" and "thottAl poo malarum" both based on BrindAvana sArangA?

saketh,
"thottaal poo malarum", I think, is in Suddha Dhanyasi.

Saketh,
"Thottaal Poomalarum" is based on Sudha Dhanyasi. Other songs (atleast most parts of the songs) based on B.Saranga are Ponnondru kanden (TMS/PBS), Poovarayum poongodiye (PBS), Thulli thulli (SPB/SJ).
Some songs of MSV in thilang .... "Azhagan muruganidam aasai vaithen", "abi naya sundari",
"palootti valartha kili (???)".

saketh,
muththukkaLO kaNgaL is based on Madhyamavathi. (The diff. between Madhyamavathi and B.Saranaga aka Brindavani is that the latter has ni3 and also ni2, whereas Madhyamavathi has only ni2.) In case of muthtukkaLO, the song sports the typical patterns of Madhyamavathi - for example lingering at ri2 and ni2.
Sriram, thuLLi thuLLi is another classical piece in Madhyamavathi. If you have a keyboard, try the song out. Just before the song begins, Radhika mentions the song as Madhyamavathi.

HI
I THINK ARR USES "ANANDHABHAIRAVI" IN MOST OF HIS FILM SONGS.IS IT CORRECT?

purnima,
most of the songs? i thought i heard anandha bhairavi after a long time in "mettu podu" from the movie duet. if there were others, i would like to know them.

Badri/Purnima: The only other one I can think of in AB by ARR is 'Anbendra Manam' from Minsara Kanavu, sung beautifully by Anuradha Sriram. There were some touches of AB in 'Mellisaiye' from Mr Romeo, but just a little bit.....Also, I feel that 'Mettu podu' is not fully in AB, there are accidentals there....

Hi guys,
It just came to my mind that the BGM before the first stanza in Columbus Columbus is Anandha Bhairavi. Also Adhisayam song I think is in Shankarabharanam as is the theme music of Jeans "Nisarisa".Also ARR has used Chakravaaham in Muthu "Vidukathaiya" and in the 2nd version of Chaiyya Chaiyya (Only Hindi Version). The bit before the rhythm/beats begin is in Chakravaaham. Also Telephone Manippol(Indian) IMO is a mixture of ARR's fave 3 ragams, namely Kaapi,Anandha Bhairavi and Shankarabharanam.

Talking of favourite ragas, did it strike anybody that ARR hardly uses Kalyani and Mohanam, ragas that any kuppan, subban in TFM tends to use?

I think IR's favourite is mayamalavagowla...which he has profusely used...."andha purathil oru maharani" in Shivaji starrer Deepam (one of IR's earliest forays into songs which have rich classical music content), "andhi varum neram" in mundhanai mudichu rendered excellently by SPB and "madurai mari-k-kozhundu vaasam" in "karagattakaran" are excellent examples. He also has a penchant for rare ragas like Lalitha (Edazhil kathai ezhudum neramidhu-Unnal Mudiyum Thambi), Nalinakanthi ("endhan nenjil neengatha thendral nee thana-from Kalaignan, a relatively obscure Kamal starrer), apart from his usual dose of Kalyani ( Vandhal Mahalakshmiye),Mohanam (Sri Ranga Ranganathanin)etc.
One striking thing is his arrangement of the songs.Sometimes they are steeped in "weighty classicism" if I may say, like the sangathis which KJY sings in the Amritha varshini song "thoongadha vizhigal rendu"(Agni Nakshatram), even while the instruments used in accompaniment as well as interludes are totally western.

Dear Mahadevan,
The song u mentioned "Madura mari Kozhundhu" is from Enga Ooru Pattukaran and not Karagattakaran. The film also had one of IR's masterpiece in Sindhu Bhairavi-Shenbagame. Our great friend Deva uses Sindhu Bhairavi in each and every film.
1.Nan Autokaren - Badsha
2.Athanda Ithanda - Arunachalam
3.Thilothama - Aasai
4.Aval Varuvaala - Nerukku Ner
5.Thanjavur Mannu Eduthu - Porkalam
and almost all his trade mark gaana pattus
6.Anna Nagar Andalu - Kalamellam K.V
7.The one in Priyamudan
8.Meesakkara Nanbaa - Natpukkaga
and many more.
Bye

Hope everyody has heard "Milae Sur Mera Tumhara"? I personally feel it is a brilliant song in Sindhu Bairavi. Unakkenaa melae nindral is a masterpiece in the same. Our own IR if i am right has given "Muthumani Maalai" and "Nilavae Mugam kaatu". After hearing to all these melodies if we take a look at the songs mentioned by Ichiboy we feel definitely frustrated. The raga has been literally killed by Deva in each song. But great observation "Ichiboy".

Sindhu Bhairavi is a very flexible raag with all 12 notes being used. IR has handled it in a very novel way in "Enna satham intha neram" without the 'heavy' character of the raag being brought out and rightly so. Deva IMO has done a decent job. But the 'yearning' facet of the raag has been emphasised best in 'Sithamellam enakku' (KVM),'Raaman ethanai raamanadi' (MSV), 'Oru naalum unai maravaathu' (IR) and 'Ennai yaarendru (VR)
