hi guys,
For me spb is the best bcos he is an all rounder/versatile and conquered tfm 4 a long time...But some are saying that upcoming singers like HH and UK already reached spb's stature and maybe better than him...What are your comments??? I am a fanatic fan of this great spb..so my fellow fanatics, plz e-mail me if you want to discuss more abt spb.....

dear imf:
I willl advise u not to under-estimate SPB like I tell others not to undermine Rafi. It is no use comparing SPB and Rafi - their domains and even the time they were at their peaks were different. Why really compare like this?? Rafi was a legend and so is SPB.

it is a fact that spb is the greatest ever singer in India with rich collections of national and other awards.nobody can match him in modulation,voice,variety,multi-linguality,numbers(already guiness record holder),singing span(more than 35 years and still number one).rendering large number of songs in beautiful, graceful and difficult south indian languages without any error is very very difficult and he even made non listeners of carnatic music to hear through is wonderful sankarabaran songs where is voice richness and modulation matched those of even great carnatic musicians.for us spb is the greatest of all.rafi may be equally great , it is only a matter of opinion. i am concluding this topic

Listen to the songs(tip of ice berg)
Mannil Inda, Pani Vizum, Keladi kanmani , Unnai partha pinbu naan, Nenju kulley yennar
Shanmuga (Avvai shannmugi) and its understandable why SPB is regarded by many in south as the best.
There are many gems of his in Kannada(Shilegalu sangeetha..from Rathasaptami and Telugu(Shankar Bharanam,...) too.
He cerainly is a living legend and may be the best male singer around today but certainly not in the league of
Rafi.
If you are a serious listener of all good music then u will realize that no male singer is in Rafi's league.
Listen to Kya hua tera vaada,Parada hai Parada,Tum mujhey yun,Ajahun aaye baalma, Dil key jharokon mein tujh ko,
Khilona jaan kar,Parbat key us paar,Hum to chaley pardes,Dil ney pyaar kiya hai ik bewafaa and any doubts would dissolve.
There is one song "O duniya key rakhwaaley".Listen NOT to the movie version but from his CONCERT collection. Its a serious request,
because in my experince itself in four different places friends with no hindi/indian music exposure have asked me who the singer
was. They found it too appealing. But if u understand hindi then it will exercise all ur brain cells and emotions.
This and other songs like "Ajahun aaye baalma" will show what human throat can do.
The modulation in place like ""AAaye bahAAr Khiley purva" in the above song are out of the world (too much and too quick).
In fact in this song the lady voice cannot match him.
People with no special inclination to music also have fallen in love with songs like "Kya hua Tera waada" bcos of the
emotions his style and delivery brings about.
Off-course if u dont understand the language then i dont expect u to make a proper judgement.
It is again the reason for me not listing the various songs to show how versatile he was.
Songs like "Tum mujhey yun bhula naa paaogey" are considered female domain and male singers cannot do justice to those.
Listen to this song and u will find how partial god has been to Rafi.
He could sing these efforlessly without sounding femalish. He has so many facets in his singing that copying him is almost impossible
In fact many Rafi clones end up with thin femalish voices(Sonu Nigam for one).
More than Yesudas and SPB considering him as their idol,
what is important is that they say he is the most gifted singer with unmatched verstality in past and present.
Yesudas told it better than i can in one of the episode of SaReGaMa. I dont intend to repeat that.
One of my old Tamil favourites is "Paal Polavey" by PS and the only male singer i can think of who can sing the same
with the same effect is Rafi.(But his pitch would go further)
When u ask a person to speak about some XYZ then obviously they are going to speak good about that XYZ.
But with Rafi (and Lata), the name comes whenever someone speaks about music.
Mannadey was the judge in one of the music programs and the anchor(Sonu) was praising him. Mannadey stopped him in between and said
"only rafi deserves such praise and no one else" and he went on talking about rafi and lata.
One of the many reasons Rafi cant be matched is that his voice remains completely stable at highest pitches.
Also listen to "Dil key Jharokon mein tujh ko".
One of my friends from Yesudas club says "others will have to scream or use nose to reach the same pitch
(Charanam starting with "Kal terey jalvey paraaye" of above song).
Please do not get back with some list of SPB (and discuss that) as u cant list anything of his i wouldnt have enjoyed/unheard.(Both in tamil and Kannada)
He is a living legend whose singing i love but Rafi stands apart from any comparison(male singer). U will hear the same from any
other south indian also who has listened to both.
ENJOY MUSIC.

Wonderfully said shruti !!!. You really laid out the facts straight and clear !!. SPB is a good singer and he may be a living legend but Rafi is Rafi. You cannot compare anyone to him. He is in a league of his own !!.

So SPB used to listen to Rafi's songs, and hence Rafi is better. Rafi used to listen to KL Saigal, who probably heard Pankaj Mullick,........eventually Adam was the best singer. engEyO logic udhaikkiradhu. No Slam on Rafi, but such stupid arguments take the topic out of context.

Shruti,
If you must present your case for Rafi, please mention appropriate examples. In the illustrious list of his renditions, you chose kyaa huaa thEraa vaadhaa? C'mon! In ajahu na aayE baalmaa, his brigaa has no control whereas Suman does a much better job. And live show versions of Duniya kE rakhwale are the worst examples of rafi's singing. In the name of improv he murders Mehal udhaas aur galiyaan sooni with a total out of the raag neraval. No! This does not mean Rafi is a lesser artist. But it simply shows that YOU do not know what examples to quote.
True Rafi had more tricks in his arsenal than KK. However, KK had truly a remarkable gift - His Voice. Irrespective of the sthaayi, he carried a solid base in his voice. Which is why even a very ordinary "phir bHi mEraa man pyaasaa" sounds resonant in his voice. Rafi, by contrast, did suffer in the base notes - please pay attention to his live show version of Oh Duniya kE rakhwaalE. He sounds like he is touching ni3 when he says "Oh" instead of the appropriate ni (ni1). And after KK came into the scene with Aradhana, it is true that Rafi became a 2nd Hero singer (or worse for beggars, death scenes, dads etc). You may think it was unfair, but it was not UNTRUE.

Wonderfully said RajaG !!!. You really laid out the facts straight and clear !!. Shuti is a good listener and she(or he) may be praising a legend but Indian Music Fan is an Idiot. You cannot compare anyone to him. He is in a league of his own !!.

SPB is in a class of his own. Comparing him with "also-rans" like HH & UK is purely idiotic.

Swamiji you are an A** yourself. You don't have good evidence to prove your arguments. Let's see what you say about all this. I want to start LAUGHING at you. Shruti is a good Indian Music listener. Raja G. Please don't be an idiot saying KK had a voice. You must be head over heals to say that KK had a more base voice than rafi. Yes that was his improv in his live show which only a genius like him could do. SPB is not in rafoi's class ok. Even he admits it himself !!!

I am also praising a legend and so is shruti and we both say that rafi si the best out of all and still you are calling me bad names. I don't understand your mentality. I also said that SPb is good as did shruti. I didn't say he was bad. You don't even know what you're talking about. I want to LAUGH at you again !!!. I'm just here to prove a point with evidence unlike you.

I didn't say because SPB listened to rafi songs so rafi is a better singer. i said this so that you can know an interesting fact. I said rafi is better due to the facts i have already mentioned. Please guys, base your arguments on proper facts and not stupid ones like oh his voice is not at the right note here or right note there based on your opinion. Who are you to judge that !!. Shruti, just tell them proper facts like i am trying to do here and as like you were before !!!

IMF,
I will be back soon.
(Remember u can't always help people who start beliving moon is brighter than sun -particulary if they havent seen daylight. )
I love SPB too, but if some one tries to say irrelevent things about Rafi, then he will get back the same treatment too.

Mr. Idoit alias IMF, why don't you ever come to your senses and stop comparing people? If you have a wife will you compare her with Aishwarya Rai? Is it even possible that she can be as beautiful as her? I have proof now, and no one can disprove this fact. Don't be a dumba** and stop wasting your time by writing here. You made known to the world that you are as stupid as you write. Laugh all your will, because I am laughing too.
Shruti the same applies to you. Please stop comparing. You achieve nothing by doing that. This is a TFM thread, so discuss about tamil music. Is that a really hard thing to do?
