Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I am trying to recollect a duet by VJ in the film "Uruvangal maralaam" (YGM & Suhasini). Can anybody help me on this?

More YSKB...
Sun Saajna
Look into my eyes, and tell me what they tell you...Sun Saajna Kya Kahe Mori Akhiyaan ?
The song begins with this rhetorical question and slowly the images of yearning and burning in love unravel. Stolen hearts and Sleepless nights - and then the turning and returning torture of rain...This is the never-ending epic within my eyes.
The song is replete with poignant and stunning images: Here are a few -
"Nagin Si Lipte Hain Bhighi Chunariya" Soaked in rain and desire, my sari/garment (Bhighi Chunariya) clings to my body with the stifling grip of a Python (Nagin).
"Souten Si Barse Hain Kari Badariya" Bereft and helpless am I in this dark downpour (Barse Hain Kari Badariya,) harsh and cruel, like the synging words of a siren mistress (Souten/Sakallathi). "Barse" conveys two opposite meanings - Downpour and Damning Words.
This line is the heart, the topic sentence if you will, of the whole song:
"Badra Bhi Barse, Yeh Naina Bhi Barse" - Water from the Skies (Badra/Clouds) competes with the Tears from my Eyes (Naina Bhi Barse) With perfect metrical symmetry, the line merges the two inevitable calamities - One of Nature, the other of the Heart. (without and within)
One can listen to the ending of this song again and again, as it showcases VJs classical fluency -
"Churaliyaa" So many meanings she evokes with those variations on just one word. "Aaan-khon-se-nindiya..." Sleeplessness, resignation, and eternal hope for the beloved's return...a moving dissolve.
VJ reigns over such happy subjects!

Thanks Susi. I was somehow confusing that song with "Kannil vandhai nenjil nindrai nee" song from "Lottery Ticket"

Those two duets are rare - and also wonderful. Neel D take note! :-)

Typo in the YSKB post: "Churaliya" should read "Chura Le Gaya..."

NeelD,
How about adding "Cola Cola Cocoa Cola" song in your Night club series. It is from the movie "Mangamma sabadham" (Kamal & Madhavi). There is also a good duet in this movie by SPB & VJ. I forgot the starting lines though...
Ammadiyo ammadiyo song rocks.....especially the lines "jil jil mohini jigina sundari..."Was it for Silk or Anuradha?

Priya -
The duet from Mangamma Sabadham was the "tamizhaakkam" of Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean" -
The song was : "Ooththikko Raja Raja, Nee Konjam Leysa Leysa" - VJ & SPB had great fun singing that one. Yes, Neel D - that's a good one for your nightclub "bodhai" series :-)

Neel D -
I just heard Ammadiyo Aaththadiyo and Pookkal Thuvi a few minutes ago...
The remarkable thing about Ammadiyo is, besides the usual clarity (as pointed by Priya in the Jil Jil Mohini bit - and throughout the song actually) is the way VJ eschews vulgarity and emphasises frivolity. Even the "No, Never, You're crazy" bit is done with a sense of fun. VJ also identifies single words (this is something I have noticed only after hearing the songs on the webpage as and when they are uploaded) and mines them to great "intoxicating" effect. In Yaradhu Sollamal it is "bodhai" tharum, in Ammadiyo it is "yennennavo" pannudhu. That's like divining gold, if you ask me!
Pookkal Thuvi is not a particularly interesting song. SNSurender's hindi makes it (unintentionally) funny. But even in this mundane composition VJ tries to carry it with sheer pacing and clarity. How many such tunes (like that Kutthum Oosi - Kazhugu song) have been solely carried by her voice to musical fruition - when there is nothing else to recommend about them? Amazing.

Naaz,
>>VJ tries to carry it with sheer pacing and clarity.<<
And she does. After listening to the song few times I realized that it grows on you. I had automatically tuned out of SNS's bodahi part and realized that the song would have been a nice solo without it.

Naaz,
Oh, I did'nt know about the duet song you mentioned from Mangamma Sabadham
I could recollect it today. It goes...
"Sorgathin vaasal enge...sollattum kangal inge..pakkam thaan dhooram illai...paakaamal thookam illai"
I am not sure..ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME SONG?
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Fri Sep 27 12:14:01 EDT 2002
Yes, Priya, we are talking about the same song! Now sing the lines I mentioned in the same tune as the lyrics you have provided...The song is repeated two times. First with "Sorgathin Vasal" and the next with "Oothikko Raja" - both times with the "ahaha...ohohoh..." following the first lines. The Ooththikko version ends with "Paiththiyame..." rising to a cresendo. Both versions are the same tune as Billy Jean. Incidentally, Mangamma Sabadham was the tamil remake of the hindi "Disco Dancer"!

on: Fri Sep 27 12:19:08 EDT 2002
Oh..I get it now...I remember seeing this movie also...
Digression:
Was it the remake of Disco Dancer? I thought Anandbabu (Nagesh's son) acted in the tamil version of Disco Dancer. Again I don't remember the movie name...
- From: Naaz (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Fri Sep 27 12:37:35 EDT 2002
Priya -
You may be right...however, I am sure that Mangamma was the remake of a Hindi film which starred Mithun and Salma Agha, the name of which will come to me in a few hours...
Anand Babu's debut film was Thangaikkor Geetham. In that his intro song was "Dhinam Dhinam Un Mugam...Disco Disco" - could that be the source of confusion?
These digressions are good for my memory! (apologies to all :-))

Digression again:
GS, Thanks. You are right. Paadum Vaanambadi I think was the remake of Disco Dancer. It starred Anandbabu and Jeevitha(Idhu thaan da's Rajashekar's wife....)
Naaz,
Yes. Anandababu's movies/songs always had Disco associated with them which was generally a confusion....No wonder he vanished when the craze for Disco went away...
- From: Priya (@ 198.23.26.253)

Thanks! For some reason I was thinking "Papi Paet Ka Sawal Hai" - (I knew it was a long title, but I was sure that this movie had Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Prada...) but you are so right! It is Kasam...

Today I was watching "Vannakathukuriya Kaathaliye" in Star Vijay. After a long gap, I heard "Swing Swing Swing" song. Simply mesmerising.
Neel, can u do anything about it?

Priya/Naaz/Sreedhar/Ragavan - You have asked for songs I dont have at the moment. I will try to get them.
Priya - ammAdiyO ammAdiyO was for Silk Smitha. poLLAcci machAnE is for Anuradha. It is a duet with Manorama singing for herself. All three ladies (VJ,Manorama,Anuradha) rock.
Naaz - Sun Saajna lyrics is so beautiful. Wish I knew the language better to really appreciate it. Thanks to VJ I can experience the feeling.

Vanakkaththukuriya Kadhaliye had some lovely songs. I have not heard "Swing, Swing, Swing" in a very long time. None of the sites have it. And too bad Neel can't help us out either. "Adiye Ennai Paramma" was also a good song from that same film (BSS/Jolly Abraham, if my guess is right?). The film was based on a Maharishi novel with the same title.
Neel - I am glad to bring some lyrical appreciation your way. The songs in YSKB are all about spring showers/ monsoon. But they all vary metaphorically and in mood. Your encouragement is enough for me to continue with the quick notes and quicker translations. I hope there is merit in this exercise - and I am sure discerning music lovers will find YSKB to be a simple and sincere album.

YSKB....again.
Sawan Piya Bin Na Bhaaye:
How can I revel in these showers when my beloved is not with me?
Sawan Piya Bin Na Bhaaye.
How will this night pass, so distracted is my heart, so anxious my being...
Kaise Kate Yeh Raina (night) Nahin Chaina (restless) Jiyara Ghabraye.
And so it begins, this saga of waiting and hoping, this long journey from dusk to dawn.
The song describes the lover's "sringaar" beautifully:
Haathon Mein Mehndi Rachake
Naino Mein Kajra Sajake
My palms are filled with henna, my eyes are lined with khol...
Hai Behti Hoon Sapne Sajaye...I sit here embellished with dreams.
Jiyara Bole Haule Haule
Akhiyan Mein Chhabi Unki Dole
My heart whispers softly
His smile sways in my eyes
Hai Badra Kare Kare Chhaye...And clouds darken my sight.
Once again the varied versions of "sawan" - dark, light, hope, despair...VJ evokes these moods of heartache, and brings the plight of the lover before our eyes. Other urdu words such as "Haule Haule" (listen to the deliberate slowness to match the meaning of the word ) "Chhabi" - the kiss of a smile can be felt in the "Chh" sound she gently nuances. The humming which brings this song to its finish (with the brief cresendo of the orchestration) is vintage Vani.
Suggestion: Dim the lights, light some incense, turn up the volume a notch, and pray for rain outside your window. Repeat. Sublime.
