Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan, Vengayam and other friends,
I am yet to go thro' Saravanan's 1977 posting in full detail! I'll do it at leisure!
'Sila nErangaLil Sila ManithargaL' was a serial in Vikatan. Interestingly, JK named it 'KaalangaL maaRum' before the serial started and changed it to 'SNSM' only in the first issue. The next few weeks, 'KaalangaL maaRum' was crossed with 'SNSM' written by the side! After its roaring success, he followed it up with 'Gangai engE pOgiRaaL?' and kept continuing as 'Jaya Jaya Sankara' parts 1, 2, 3 etc.,(they even had separate names like 'Endhaiyum thaayum' etc.,)
In 'Bhairavi' also, the titles showed Srikanth followed by Rajinikanth, respecting the former's seniority!

Vengayam- Kanthimathi played an important role in Unnai pol oruvan. I believe KRV was the heroine of 'Yaarukkaga Azhuthaan'?

Saravanan - Thanks for the latest chapter of the chronology. I have not heard "Ammadi konja neram" since the late 70s. I dont even remember the EPEV songs, I am sure I have heard them before. Also amazing to know the number of movies everpretty Punnagai Arasi has acted. enggenggO and viziyO are contributions from SK. It was first time I heard enggenggO.
Naaz - You have been the source of VJ's Hindi songs. I am also trying to collect VJ's songs in other languages. Anyone who has information about online music stores can help.
I have no clue about the revival of that other thread. Better not dig up the same controversies again.

Friends,
Suddenly, I got a doubt whether it was Vikatan or DinamaNi Kadhir which serialised SNSM?!! Because, around the same time, Vikatan had a JK story named 'oru veedu, oru manithan, oru ulgam'!! (Puritans used to argue that it should be 'Or ulagam' and not 'oru ulagam'!!!)

Cinema Virumbi -
Vikatan did not serialise SNSM. I believe it was either Kadhir or Kalki. My guess (90%) it was the former. I have a lot of bones to pick with the talented Mr. Jayakanthan, particularly with his brand of feminism in SNSM and Oru Nadigai Nadagam Paarkiraal. But I don't think this thread is the appropriate place for my critique! However, I will give you a few choice "barbs" when I have been through Saravanan's post a few more times (esp regarding Veru Idam Thedi Povalo).
Saravanan - Thanks!! Your posts are detailed and have great archival merit. My posts are more (or less) spontaneous, and my data references are pulled out of my fading memory (with regards to TFMmusic and HFM music.) I am touched by your compliment :-)
Neel D - You are welcome. It is my honour to be able to contribute to your webpage and make VJs songs available to genuine rasikas of good music all over the world. Your site is the jewel in the VJ crown!
Tidbit: At the local international film festival (opens on 26th) here is the Indian line-up:
a. Alaipayudhey b. Kannaththil Muththamittaal c. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (aiyyo?) d. Dam/Age: A film with Arundhati Roy. e. Hollywood/Bollywood (Deepa Mehta's latest. She made Fire & Earth) and Theergadanam (?) with Suhasini and Suresh Gopi.
I really don't know who chooses films for festivals abroad. But the above list is more than somewhat perplexing. Any thoughts?
(To add to this I have been invited to join a panel on discussing Bollywood's influence on Indians / and Indians abroad. This is to be telecast on 6th October. The guests are going to be Lisa Ray and another toronto film-maker. What to say???)

Did you guys check out a recent Outlook magazine issue with the covery story about Greatest Indians of Independent India. There was an article titled 15 minutes of Fame (Heroes to Zeroes) - Stars who exploded before they could transform themselves into supernovae. And they had Vani Jayaram as one of them, and this is what tey had for her.
/*
When she sang Bole re papihara, her landmark song for Guddi, she gave the Mangeshkar sisters a run for their money. But just when people had started saying that Jairam’s voice would rule the waves, she quietly returned to the south amid rumours that the Mangeshkars had a hand in it. She recorded for Kumar Gandharva; and Pandit Ravi Shankar, who recorded his Mira bhajans in her voice, called her a "computer". But people remember her as somebody who challenged the sisters and then mysteriously faded out.
*/
I personally feel, that this is not the way they treat a great singer like her. Film Music is not everything . She is still making waves in devotional circuit with her bhajans and she has proved her authority in countless languages in India. I feel as far as Outlook is concerned, everything starts and ends with Bombay and Delhi

Good one. Which points from those threads are absolutely indispensible? Please, wanna be a good samaritan (strainer?) and help me? :-)
Maverick: Thanks for your input.
We have discussed the above "15 minutes" in the An Interview with Vani Jayaram thread. Please check the archives for the not-so-distant discussion threads. What you say is true, and bears repeating at every such opportunity of selective and racist affront.

Saravanan,
yes it was unnai pol oruvan. Thanks for correcting me.
Re. SNSM- it first appeared as a short story titled "ganga snanam ?" as a muthirai kathai in AV. It was later expanded and serialised either in kathir or AV. I am not sure which. Those days my reading used to be limited to seeing Jokes or vandumama vin chitira kathai in Kalki. But the short story is part of the two volume collection of best Tamil short stories by malan (Inru).
I saw the movie in 1977 when i could barely understand the nuances. I believe the nagesh character- the librarian - does write the story- the same Ganga snanam & it gets published!
Re Outlook it is that way because of its chosen objective of outdoing India Today. So it is always provocative & mostly frivolous. It is the magazine form of a paaket naaval( pocket novel )

Vengayam -
The "short-story" version is alluded to in the feature film - the short story is titled Agni Pravesam and not Ganga Snanam (that would have been a bit too pun-ny, huh?). Nagesh plays the short-story writer who watches Lakshmi (ganga) being raped (saravanan, "seduced" is an altogether different sexual dynamic)and then dropped off at her home. Bhimsingh had so really (un)imaginative symbolism with cars and tyres when this "rape" moment is presented on screen. Don't get me started on SNSM...:-) I could spew for a few pages (should I??)
Cinema Virumbi -
Unfortunately, it is not going to be telecast on Indian TV. Just Canadian TV :-( But who knows, news might get out, after I go for Bollywood's juggular :-)!! I'll keep you posted about the event.

I will certainly do so. Please give me a few days, and I will let you know the exact time, date and channel/network - once I have a confirmation. I know for sure that the telecast is on Oct 6th - and the Network is CityTV, I believe. Please watch this space for the "exact" details. Thanks. (FYI, the panel discussion might follow an interview with Hema Malini - so I've been told! :-)

Neel D -
Thanks for the new songs. I have not had a chance to download/listen to them today. It has been one of those days from... - wherever they come from! A complete tizz. But I will give them some time tomorrow and will also post a few more paras on YSKB.
Kaumudi -
I don't know about a "gala" time. Often, these things sound great on paper, and as ideas. The actuality has, in most cases, revealed itself to be something else! But I will let you know if this is one of those rare "insightful" moments - but, no, I'm not holding my breath :-)
