It's true that Vedha copied quite a bit from HFM, but he did it without any pretense and was almost 100% faithful to the original at all times. That's "respectful plagiarism", almost bordering on obsequiousness (musically speaking), with no intent to deceive or project himself more capable than he is. No snatch-and-grab two lines from an old Tamil song, two lines from an already flogged Hindi song, four lines from a pop song and interludes from an obscure song, with some personal band-aids, like Deva. Vedha also was the MD for some Tamil remakes of Hindi movies, so it was only natural for the songs to travel with the movie. I listed the track mapping between "Woh Kaun Thi" and "yaar nee" in the PS website thread. In all likelihood, YN is a remake of WKT. (Have seen WKT, but not YN.) Vedha's imported songs are numerous, but here are some songs that make many people do a double take.
sau bar janam lenge (Ustadon ke Ustad, Ravi) = oaraayiram paaravaiyile (vallavanukku vallavan, Vedha)
tujhe pyar karte hain karte rahenge (April Fool, Shankar-Jaikishen) = naan malaroadu thaniyaaga aen ingu ninRaen (iru vallavargaL, Vedha)
sau saal pehle mujhe tumse pyar tha (Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai, Shankar-Jaikishen) = manam ennum maedai maelae (vallavanukku vallavan, Vedha)

I don't know if I would call "vaaraayo thozhi" a lift. ARR has always maintained that R.D. Burman is one of the MDs who greatly influenced him. In an interview (can't recall when and where), ARR said that it was his preoccupation with "o mere sona re" from Teesri Manzil by RDB, that made him come up with "vaaraayo thozhi", whose first line has a striking similarity to that of "o mere sona re". The rest of the song resembles the "original" only in spirit, not in the notes. Anybody who makes music will tell you that this is a very common phenomenon, that of the mind subconsciously traversing down a musical alley where somebody has boldly gone before! TFM is ridden with such instances.
Teesri Manzil songs were such a rage that they spread their tentacles even into TN. For some reason, out of all the chartbusters from TM, it was "o mere sona re" that played at least once every day on the radio, and was a craze. (Wonder if "edhirigaL jaakkirathai" was a remake of TM.)So, if you lived in TN and listened to the radio a lot, chances are that you have heard this song countless times. I am sure ARR was no exception.

One more inspiration of Rahman from RD Burman. Just the beats:

I'm not sure whether someone mentioned this before (the archives have grown so much since I last visited:-))
A recent Harris Jayaraj song which goes something like
'EdhO ondRu, EdhO ondRu unnaikkEtpEn, illai endRAl, illai endRAl uyir thuRappEn'
is a straight lift of a Xmas song (I'm not able to catch the lines, I think it's something like 'God lets you marry gentlemen'). Due to the season I'm hearing this song often -at malls, players of colleagues etc...even aired on the FM radio 'Smooth Jazz V98.7' in Detroit':-))

Thats 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' and has many versions by umpteem people from Bing Crosby to Barenaked Ladies!
It does sound like the prelude in Edho Ondru and has some pieces inside which sound similar, but I'm not able to find a direct lift anywhere. Anyway, let me listen to it a few more times!

Any one heard the song 'Maragatha Mazhaithuli' from "Power". I heard it in the trailer. In the anupallavi of the song, you can see the resemblance of the saranam in 'Sundari' song from "thalapathi".
I think both the songs are set in Raag Kalyani and they have used an accidental Ga 1. Surely, I think vidyasagar was inspired from that Sundari song.

Even in "Enna Vilai Azhage" of Kadhalar dinam ,the pallavi is a straight lift from "Thamgapadhakkathin melae"(Sivaji Ganesan). It cane be termed as a sophiticated version with lively BGM.

A rare but glaring copy(?):
Y'day i saw a telegu movie "Naari Naari nadamula muraari" acted by baalakrishna (i guess its a 80s movie). Its MD is KVM. In the movie all songs are of vice nice tunes. KVM has used the award-winning(?) his tune "thirupparangundRaththil nee siriththaal murugaa thiruththani malai meedhu aedhirOlikkum". My room mate said that this tune is a re-use of his(KVM) own tune of NTR in 60s, coz the movie is also a kind of rehash of that old NTR movie.
The copy part I am going to mention is a shocking one. There is a song in almost ditto tune of "naan thaedum sevvandhi poovidhu; oru naaL paarththu andhiyil pooththadhu" (in HindoLam raagam) by IR in thamizh film called "Dharmapaththini". I dont know who has used the other's tune (is it IR used the KVM tune or viceversa). I don't know when the film "dharmapaththini" and this telegu "naari naari nadamula muraari" came. The telegu song was a duet, very well sung by SPB and PS (but it did not have the prelude aalaapana which the dharmapaththini song had in the voice of IR).
can anyone throw light on this?

Kupps,
yes, KVM used IR's tune in the song 'em vaano tarumutunnadi' in Naari Naari Naduma Muraari.
This is not the first time. KVM copied IR's rehashed "pani vizum malarvanam " (Ninaivellaam Nithyaa) for the film Mukku Pudaka.

oh! is it...its a news to me.
thanks Teja.
It is indeed a tribute to IR by a great MD.
