KarthikS,
Bad to hear YSR is doing it. Also have you checked out the link given by copyman.
ARR's iruvar song "Ayirathil nan" starting music is heavily inspired from this source.

check out the malayalam song "chingamasam vanu poyal" (film, "meesa madhavan", released last year). "manmatha rasa" is an unabashed lift of this song. the original song is much better (shankar mahadevan, i think, is the male singer).
.
recently i read an interview by Dhna in "new padmalaya" magazine, where he talks about creativity, originality etc..! what an irony!!

auto, I had also felt the same after hearing that JJ number. I feel both Bharatwaj(MD of jj) and AnuMalik(Iam not sure about this one ) might have lifted from the same source.

IR's 'Poove Sempoove' opening guitar piece is inspired from Enrique Granados's 'Spanish Dances - Danza Triste (#10)

I think the tempo is little fast in this midi. I was listening to this piece on radio yesterday, and after first 4 bars I felt like humming 'poove sempoove' flute prelude. Also listen from 23 sec to 29 sec. At 26th, you'll find a transition between major to minor which reminds me the 'Vaaipesave' transition. Well.. I'm trying to say that this piece (the way arpeggio is played) must be an inspiration. IR has developed this song very well using his own creativity. No doubt about it. Since IR is a guitarist, there is a lot of possibility that he must have listened and enjoyed Enrique Granados's guitar compositions.

John, classical guitar pieces start out like that. once your pluck strings it all sounds like that, just like anyone who has a voice will try to sing and all can song from the vocal chords, but getting a good tune is difficult, also sounding like yesudas or spb will depend on genetic inheritance. also, singers can sing in the bathroom or in the recording studio or in the concert hall, all of them use vocal chords and some have shrill sound, becae they ar female, then others manly voice. don't forget children singing together, they make chorus, in the church adults sing together and then it is choir, then folk songs villager sing in groups and then it is called folk sounds... like that... basically like the guitar needs plucking and can be plucked in thousand different ways and thousand different tunes and patterns can be formed, if it is classical music, then guitar usually plucked like in poove sempoover song. like singers usually sing from the throat or stomach, when singing rahman songs....
John, find if any spanish or western or any indian composer has composed oither guitar phrases like IR's then come back here and slander

John,
It need not be a intentional inheritance. Sometimes composers listen to some other's compositions and subconsciouly like a good part of it.
After somedays when they sit for composition, the part which they liked will come out as if it is there composition. Inspiring such subtle parts is really difficult, if it need to happen intentionally.

And we have a separate thread going on about something called "backmasking in May Maasam 98" :-))

Yes, 'Unai Naan' from JJ does seem close to Anu Malik's Kareeb track, 'Chori chori'. But my guess is that both Anu and Bharadwaj might have got it off some other western original.

Sirpi has done it once again.Saw the trailers of the movie "Nadhi Karayinile"by Ponvannan.A critically acclaimed film i think.
Sirpi has lifted Bupen Hazarika s tune from Rudali (Dimple Kapadai starrer) ..Dan Dhum Dhum sung by Lata Mangeshkar.
Regarding the back masking i wish Charan should have done the "front masking"during picturisation of May-98.KuLikatha oru goshtiye adugindrathu.I have never seen so many dirty looking women in one single song.A disgraceful song.

OISG,
Sirpi can never change. He's a parasite.
You would think that a non-formulaic film like "Jameela" (the original name of the film, when it was scerened in the festival circles last year), based on a celebrated Kannada novel would inspire the MD to come up with original, creative numbers, that would satisfy the artist in him.
I saw the trailer on TV and heard the copy of the Lata song! I wasn't surprised, when I saw the MD as Sirpi! There's another song too, which is also a copy of a telugu number, which I can't rememeber.
Since it was an 'art' film he went to another 'art' film like 'Rudali' for stealing!
It only goes on to prove that this man has no talent whatsoever.

The 1st 2 lines of Dhina's song from 'anbe un vasam' "ore our paarvayaal" sounds like a take off on SPB's number, "Sach mere Yaar hai" from the Hindi film Saagar (music RD Burman).
However I must admit that the rest of the pallavi and the charanams are completely different, and flow well as a nice melody. A good case of inspiration.

The greatest copying-feat is IMHO by Veda! He has lifted almost all the songs from the Hindi film Woh Kaun Thi lock, stock and barrel and pasted them into a Tamil film. Even Annu Mallick does not share this rare honour of copying one full album from one source!

u kno wats funny is once sumone says IR was inspired by sumthing or copied his fans come running to maku up excuses but those excuse are exceptable for other MDs?
Dhina's Kathalagi from King direct copy from one of stings songs.

AV, I think Sirpi has matched that feat in Ullathai alli tha, the only difference being that with Veda the sources were all from HFM :-)

On the plagiarism issue, I wonder why we are quick to blame music directors who lift tunes from western sources, but completely ignore the fact that many composers have freely borrowed tunes for their film songs from traditional classical (Karnatic or Hindustani) compositions.
In terms of creative effort on part of the MD, it makes no difference whether the tune is copied from a known classical composition or a western song. Thus, for instance, all the Shankarabharanam songs are totally derived from classical compositions with hardly any changes introduced by KVM (eg: manasa sancharare, brocheva..., paluke bangaramayanna..). So why isnt that a case for plagiarism?
- From: interpreter (@ 4.3.119.204)
on: Sat Dec 20 14:50:21 EST 2003
ummm ... because these songs are sung in the movie by a character who is an exponent of Carnatic music. You wouldn't want a famous Carnatic singer to sing "brOchEvArevarurA" the way those goons are shown singing, would you?
By the same token, "alai pAyudhE" from the movie with the same name is not plagiarised because that composition is sung in that traditional way in gatherings. Now, "en veettu thOttathil" from Gentleman is quite another matter. It borrows heavily from "nAdhavindhu" in the pallavi for no legitimate reason. (Never mind that the results are astounding.)
