  Vicky: I prepared a long list of bharathiyaar songs way back (early 90s) and posted it on soc.culture.tamil. This was stored on early versions of the tfm pages - appears to have been lost in cyberspace. I've dredged it up from my old PCs' files and uploaded it to www.kturn.com (login: tfmusic & passwd: songs).

  Yesterday i listened to an old hindi song from the film 'shatranj'. The song 'bakkamma bakkamma' starts in telugu and ends in Hindi.
  I was able to recognize the male voice(Rafi) but the female voice was hard to identify..it sounded like PLeela but am not sure. Does anyone know who the female singer is?The song was picturised on Mehmood and Helen.

  I used to be a regular reader of this wonderful forum till 2 years ago, and have also occasionally posted here. Its my first visit to this site since early 2000. As the old timers here know, I am a native Telugu and my Tamil knowledge is almost zero (today). So, please pardon my "Telugu centric" messages.
  
  1. SK's message dated Aug 19th, refering to Randor Guy's article...> It was not always the case! But quite a few disks from late 40s (which includes "Apoorva Sahodaragal") were issued that way. A couple of other examples:
  
  Lata wasn't credited for her legendary number: "aayegaa aanewaalaa" in "Mahal" (1949) on disk. At least, not in 1st release.
  
  Ghantasala wasn't given credit for his "raama naama sankeertanamE" in "raksharEkha" (1949).Instead the name of the character played by A. Nageswara Rao.
  
  The Gramophone company, nor the Saraswati Stores, followed any standards in crediting the singers.
  More on this topic later.
  
  2. The MD for "Raji En Kanmani" (1954, in Telugu: raajee naa praaNam, a film partly based on Chaplin's City Lights, and also borrows good bit of music from him!) is Rajeswara Rao's elder brother: S. Hanumanta Rao.
  
  3. peN/sangham (1954), Balasaraswati didn't sing for that film. The female duet you are refering to was sung by PS and bhagavati.
  
  4. The song "vagalOy vagalu" in "paataaLa bhairavi" (1951) was more based on a Spanish composition.
  
  5. Jikki did sing in "dEvadaasu" (1953) but wasn't credited, nor remuneration paid by th film's producer: DL Narayana. More on those politics and many other things; esp. wrt Jamunarani's, Jikki's first songs, Balasaraswati's career later.

  The female voice in "Bakkammaa Bakkamma....." is Sharda, who sang a few songs for Shankar/Jaikishan. Sharda also tried music direction, but the gossip was that it was all done by Shankar:-))

  Great song isnt it. How did you guys come across this song. I heard this for the first time in 1995 and fell in love with it. It was bugging my head until 1999 when I found the link at PPP but it was not downloadable. thanks to you guys I have finally got it back.
