a.a: You are right on "Annamitta Veetillae", but, Ennarumai Kannukutti was also sung by TMS. Ia m positive about that. Your Info on Krishna Vijayam is probably right. AS both were 149/50 productions (Mandhirikumari and Krishna Vijayam).

Namma veetu dheivam's heroine is K R Vijaya but the song you have quoted is acted out by - I think her name is Vijaya Lalitha - the one who sings Naan unnai vaazhthi in Nootrukku Nooru. There's another nice song for K R Vijaya in the same movie: Aasai manadhil kottai katti. And there's a horrible song for Vijayalalitha: ThEn malar vannam...

Interview with (Viswanathan) Ramamurthy
Excerpts:
-Born in Trichy and learnt violin from his father
-Been playing violin for C.R.Subbaraman (initial salary Rs. 1.50 /month)
-Met MSV in 1950 who was playing Harmonium for CRS. When CRS died in 1952, they took over from him. Shankar-jaikishan duo were the inspiration their joining hands. Apparently Ramamurthy first said to MSV, "You compose tunes, I'll play violin as always", to which MSV responded "Anne, appadi sollaatheenga. Naama rendu perum sernthe compose pannuvom. Saagum varai naam sernthe iruppom".
-They were initially 'Ramamurthy-Viswanathan' (since MSV is younger) but swapped the names for pronunciation convenience.
-They separated in 1965 (due to ego clash) and went alone. Ramaurthy did few movies like 'marakka mudiyumaa', 'naam' but didn't make it big.
-Praises AR Rahman a lot for bringing a new dimension to film music.
-In 1985, MSV called to say: "Anne, ungalai paarkka vendum. Neengalum naanum pazhayabadi serndhu isai amaikka vendum, varattumaa?" and after which they did 'engirundho vandhaan' together. It was a flop.
-Concludes saying "Engalukkul ippothu otrumai irukkiradhu. Aanaal padangal thaan illai!"

Re Jikki's interview in chennai.com, she had mentioned `Devadas' as one the movies which made her popular. I can't remember any of her songs in that movie. All female numbers are by K.Rani and Bala saraswathy. Is it the junior version of the song `Oh oh devadas' with K.Rani?
- From: Vicky (@ 12.89.139.5)
on: Sat Sep 22 20:15:18 EDT 2001
a.a: Devadas is one of the movies which made Jikki popular in both telugu and tamil. In telugu she had a hit with "oh ..devadas..chaduvu edaina..manavati.." with Ghantasala (Lyrics: Pingali and Music CR Subburaman). Another hit from the movie was a solo by Balasraswathy Devi (Taane Maraenaa...). Jikki also did the same song in Tamil remake including Balasraswathy "Anbe Paavama".

I have always been fascinated by Balasaraswathy's voice. A gifted Soprano with touch of melancholic voice who can sing with ease. She belonged to the vizianagaram repetoire. I have listened to songs that she had colabrated with Ghantasala, Chittor Nagiah, S Rajeswar Rao, C R Subburamn, Dakshinamurthy. Her songs in movies such as "Devadas", "Mangayar Thilakam" and "Raji En Kanmani" are listened to even today. Since my early days I was obssesed with her singing abilities. Her talent ws fully exploited by great composers between 1945-54. She was more popular in Telugu along with S Varalaksmi, with a quite a few rendition in Tamil. I hope we can have her songs listed under "Rare Film Songs Page".

Vicky,
Thanks for clarifying Jikki-Devadas confusion.
Hopefully you may be able to clarify this too:
When Jamuna Rani came to Sri Lanka, she was introduced to audience as the one who sang `Arul tharum deva mathave' along with P.A.Periyanayaki in the movie `Gnanasoundari'. Jamuna Rani didn't deny that.
In her interview Jikki claims that the same song was her first. Was there a Telugu version of that movie, and is it possible that Jikki was referring to the telugu version?
Or is it possible that both Jikki and Jamuna Rani were tried for the song with Periyanayaki and one of their's didn't make it to the movie?

a.a: Glad that I was able to clear the confusion. "Arul Tharum" was sung by P A Perianayaki under SV Venkataraman. It is quite possible that Jikki and JR had a chance to sing what PAP already did. One thing...in those days it is not quite uncommon that some of the old songs of melody queen Noorjehan (1942-47) was repeated by her and other sopranos in other in other movies.
