Even Rafi's version has a similarity. Esp. the prelude. This is a classic example for inspiration. Songs like this can help listeners differentiate between 'inspiration' and 'copy'.

doubter, are you talking about the above link that bb posted? because the rafi version doesnt have the start which is there in lata's version. she starts by humming "chale aao" similiar to "vaan pole" by PS..the similiarity is easily seen..I agree this is a classic example of inspiration..

Copied ??? i could just make only the beat as a copy, nothing else..... not a *blunt* copy (oh, yeah, ARR is clever, isnt it :-)).....

Bhagavathar...pls be a real Bhagavathar and be more specific when you make such statements...tell me how many different combinations of beats can you make with a Bass and Snare drum and that too match a specific mood of a song...how come that we don't complain when we listen to so much of TFM where in many songs..the tabla rhythms are almost the same and make a big issue out of it when it comes to western music !

Hello all!
Someone Pl. console me-I am (or rather WAS)a grrrrrrrrrrreat fan of ARR-but looking at all these forums-God!ARR-a undu illai-nnu aakkaraanga.
Is he not a really good composer?Does he do nothing other than copying?
Is there no ardent fan of ARR on earth?
Of course , I agree that he shouldn't be recycling his own music this often-but look at it this way-isn't it better to repeat old , good tunes rather than to make new , bad tunes(like many other M.Ds do)?
A request-only those capable of consoling me must reply to me!
After I saw the huge list of his copied songs(somewhere in the old responses-posted by Karthik)-naan manasu odanji poirukken!

cosmician,... I think the whole rhythm pattern (rhythm loop?) of the song Bhagavathar pattern posted was C&P into poopookkum.. not just bass and snare drum - also the timing of clunky sounding instrument playing the chord. Of course if both are from some commercial CD, then one cant call it a copy i guess..

People who dont know to identify copy!, please dont waste your time. indha beat copy, bass copy ellam just halfboiled information, most dont know what they are telling, just for the sake dont hear few beats and just blindly make a statement, musically nothing seems to be even close.
Till date there is no proof for a single song lifted by arr, 100%. but others have atleast one to their a/c.

one more half bolied statement,
repeating, copying his own song...etc...
please! for a composer, he needs to maintain a style, so some scores seems to sound same, they are not.
for ex; kodaikala katre is just same notes as nilave vaa....(play the pallavi and see it you could) ---- this is not a self-copy , it is raja's style of music. similarly everyone has a style, like at times some painters uses same colors...

Comment, cosmician:
No point in explaining to those who are bound to take the weapon of copying and recycling to bash ARR.
In ARR case alone , if he uses a guitar as an instrument itself it's a copy.
You need some arguments against ARR to keep your hope about your favourite MD alive. Pardon these people.

"it is from the same drum kit, called has soul/housekit. this is a very std soul beat pattern. Cannot be called as copy"
Is the xylophone like sound also part of this drum kit ? If not, this is a rhythm and/or arrangement copy.
"we listen to so much of TFM where in many songs..the tabla rhythms are almost the same"
Yeah..in that case the tune/melody is the feature of the song. In the case of ARR, people are waiting to hear a different arrangement in every song/album. This 'uniqueness' in rhythm is what makes ARR sought after (IMHO). And he gets paid the big bucks. So if we find out the arrangement was lifted out of another song, one is likely to be disappointed/feel cheated. Again all IMHO.

try to listen to song that has mallets or marimba, there is std way to play a marimba (this sound is called marimba not xylophone), going down the scale in 16 or 32nd note is the way to play it, like when you play a tamboura, we have to play sa pa sa...so can we start calling it a copy..? pathetic.
Any way I dont want to convince you that it not a copy or inspiration. arr is far superior to me than what you think. I know what he works we. Period.
It surprising people dont feel "cheated" when other MDs lift songs directly. has been proved many times here.. this is often covered with an argument that number of original given by the md is more than his copied versions and other bla bla bla's...
Secondly many here dont hear arr song..they hate him.....as per them his music is a bag of stolen trash...so why bother about cheating...when you dont like it dont hear it. He is making big bucks!...name a cine personality who works for free...?...it boils down to "arguments against ARR to keep hope alive for your favourite MD ".
thats all.

kiru,
I am not the kind who find bits of similarity as copy. But you have a point. We praise ARR for rythm and beats than anything and if that the part thats inspired and what good is it anyway?.

Please educate if something is a 'standard' arrangement or it is unique to a song. I am willing to learn. Also, correct me on other points I made about rhythm arrangements etc. I am just trying to find the technical features of a song that ARR does which makes him so popular. It is purely an academic exercise to study the success of a musician. I dont want to be satisfied with saying, "his music is good, so people like his music". I want to know what in his music that makes it good.

Kiru..for a start let's say that he is supposed to have the largest collection of sounds in Asia..read this somewhere..this shows his passion for the digital medium..and he is able to infuse his compositions with clear sounds which draw inspiration from fusion and jazz, that's his own individuality gathered from his experience of playing fusion music with Zakir Hussain etc.

an observation.... (i dont now if this has been discussed before)
ARR has used the tune of telephone maNipOl as a flute bgm in rOjA (poNNu pAkkara scene- early portion of the movie)

Karthik,
After listening to the entire song of "Rhythm of the Pride Lands", it looks like ARR has been definitely inspired from this song. Not only the starting beats resemble the beats of "Poo pookum osai", but there is a stage (i think after 1:40 minutes) in the "Rhythm of the Pride lands.." where there is a sudden increase in tempo. I do not know what's the connotation for such a change in the musical language, but I do can certainly see a similarity between this and the sudden increase in tempo in the "oo la la" song of Minsara kanavu. Any comments..

hari,
i checked out the "roja" BGM yesterday... yes you are correct. "telephone mani" appears in the BGM during "ponnu pakkara scene". Basically he has used the flute/keyboard in "anandha bhairavi" raaga and thats why it looks so similar (Telephone mani is also in "ananda bhairavi" i guess...)
