Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."

Alright everyone. You really owe me one this time. I crossed the seven seas to bring you this. More songs coming soon :-)
AththORam kodivIdu athan mElE gOpAlan - Go to the page I just added. Tamil Solos Page 4.

Added few more songs to the same page. Not the greatest quality recording but the songs are so hard to find and even harder to clean up.
Happy listening!

The songs from Aadu, Disai, Avan - are so rare, that listening to them after these many years is simply electric. Thanks for the new solos.
What a way to spead the weekend for you!

AththOram kodivIdu is a bold blend of Bhakti and Sensuality. I think All India Radio must have banned it. Cant remember hearing it from the radio. VJ really rocks in that song. Listen to the 'O...' at the end of "nAn koNda varamallavO..." and "Anandha iravallavO...", and to the vibration in the "E...." at the end of "Aha rAdhAvum aRiyAmalE..." and "Aha peNNaga nAn vandhadhE...". Sensuality expressed without a tiny bit of vulgarity. That is VJ specialty.

Neel- I am filled with happiness- "thanks" seems so inadequate! What lovely songs! 'Mazhaikkala megham maharajan vaazhga' evokes nostalgic memories. A rare solo for VK by VJ- superb! BTW, I thought'Enakenna manakavalai' was from Sorgathil thirumanam, but maybe you're right about it being from'Sorgathin thirappu vizha'- at least the song with its English phrases 'No mother, no father, we don't bother!' 'Where we begin, where we end, then and there, we have no friend' etc, fit into the story line of the Jayamalini starrer S T V.
Nandri! Nandri!
Naaz, I'll surely listen to 'Ammaanai' again,(karumbu thinna kooliya?!) but I always felt VJ said'ha' instead of 'ga'- like in the Paalaivanacholai song-'Mehamey mehamey' instead of 'Megamey megamey'.
Of course I may be mistaken.

Saravanan,
I have always believed that VJ (given her brahmin ancestry/heritage) has been conscientious about not mixing the "vadamozhi" Ha with the tamizh mozhi ka/ga. Malayalee singers, when they sing in tamizh, have this identifiable phonetic problem (as malayalam is a hybrid of sanskrit and tamizh/indigenous dialects). For instance, Chitra sings "Ammanu sollavum AdhiHaram illai." (Naan Oru Sindhu) or "Ini enakkaHa azha vaendaam...(Oru jeevan azhaiththadhu).
VJ, on the other hand, is committed to particularity and the GA/KA (in her tamizh songs) is (to my ears) never a Ha. Hence, I have to once again, respecfully, say that Megame sounds like Megame (ga) and not Mehamey.
Ha vo ,Ga vo - as you succinctly put it: It has no effect on the sugarcane. Sweet as ever :-)

Naaz,
In that song, Meghamae Meghamae... Vani does exact pronounciation of how other pure tamilians would say. That particular word has more emphasis on HA rather than on GA. And Vani exactly does according to the correct pronounciation. On the other hand if we take "Ragam" where GA is more pronounced and Gangai where GA is more pronounced, Vani does sing perfectly.

Neel -
I had comepletely forgotten the lilt of the stanzas in Aathoram. It is quite the amazing transition from the slokas to the stanza...esp when VJ begins "Ennai Kannan Konjiya Kaalangal..." it is sweet delirium.
Do you find a similarity in the music arrangement of this particular song, and the ones from Andhaman Kadhali? I don't know why, but I have been thinking of Ninaivale Silai Seidhu - from the time I heard Aathoram. I can feel a melodic trace. Does anybody else have similar associations upon hearing the song?
Avan Aval Adhu (adapted from Sivasankari's Oru Singam Muyalagiradhu) was a controversial novel, and the thematic controversy (artificial insemination / surrogate motherhood etc.) followed it to the screen. It was considered a "licentious" novel, and as such, "scandalous" and "unIndian."
This might have also had a role in the song "Aathoram" not getting its share of airtime ("sex"plicit as the song is, and the only such song in the film) and "Illam Sangeetham" (Happy family!!) was played again and again for the statu-quo.

With Ga Gha Ha - we are moving into "Aspiration" territory. I remember, for the longest time (maybe even to this day,) Dina Thandi newspaper always insisted on spelling/sounding words such as "Mohan/am" "kamalahasan" "Grahanam" with the "Ga" (alphbetically Ka). Do you know more about the aspiration rules? Are they discretionary? Or are they indicative of "caste/class" in their usage - the uppers do, the lowers don't? (ironic that might be, given that aspiration also means dreams of upward mobility.) Andha Madhiriya? It is an interesting subject, that could use more input from others/experts.

There is a song with the names of female movie stars in Avan Aval Adhu right? I know it is sung by Manorama. Does any other singer also sing it along with her?

Priya,
Manorama's song is with LRE "andha nAL muthaRkoNdu indha nAL varaikkum". Entertaining song. "mArgazi pUkkaLE" is another nice song from Avan Aval Athu.
s0,
I collected questions till the 19th and sent them over to Naaz for the interview. Journalist Naaz takes over from there.

Naaz, a small correction about the pronounciation of Thamiz words. When the "Vallina" letters (ka,cha,ta,tha,pa,Ra) comes at the starting they r pronounced as they are. At the same time, when they come in between they soften their sound. (ka will become ha, cha will become sa, ta will become da, etc)
naham (nail) is correct and not nagam.
In chakaram, cha doesn't change its sound. But it becomes sa in rasam.
it+a = ta. But pa + ta + m is pronounced as padam.
I still cudn't understand how ga got in to this. When I see name boards (in english) having Magesh, Mogan, Vegam, Thiyagam................. I dont know how to express my distress. Since it is Raag in another language, we need not pronounce Raagam. Raaham is very fine and correct. French people call Japan as Japon as per their grammer. I dont know how to end. So I stop here.

Naaz, I bow to your superior judgement.
I agree Chitra was blatantly 'ha'- her 'thambiHaley thangaiHaley' (Chinna kuyil paadum- Poove poochooda vaa, is yet another testimony.)
BTW, can we still send questions for the interview?

Has anyone tried to trace VJ's career in tfm? Wouldn't it be interesting to try to list her songs year by year? If it has already been done, please forgive me. But let me start and we can collectively attempt this. For some , it'll be a nostalgic trip down memory lane, for others it'll be a voyage of discovery- at any cost it is sure to be interesting. Naaz, Neel, Priya, sO, Sivaselvam, G Ragavan and all other fans of VJ, you can all give your inputs.
Let us first analyse the tfm scene in the early 70s. TMS and PS were no longer the monarchs of all they surveyed. Their monopoly was over with the 60s. SPB and KJY had made their mark and were definitely better suited for the younger actors.
SJ too made her mark, fetchingly, with her 'Unnidathil ennai koduthen'-Avalukkendru Oru Manam(1972)- a grand comeback, of sorts, for her. MSV started attempting a few films without PS- Ganga Gowri (1973), for instance. Variety had made a forceful re-entry in tfm playback singing, and this time was to stay for good.
Though MSV was still going strong, V Kumar too was giving great songs ( he was given the title "Mellisai maamani"). SG too were making their presence felt. VB, of course, returned to tfm with 'Kalyanamaam Kalyanam'-1974.(his earlier stint was mostly dubbed films, perhaps with just one original tamizh film-Anbe deivam-1957). GKV showed the stuff he was made of in Sabadham-1971 and Ponnukku thanga mansu-1973. Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan too was churning out many films.
It was at this opportune juncture that VJ entered the scene. I don't know much about her career in hfm, save Guddi. But this much I can say for sure- to use a oft-repeated cliche- what was Hindi's loss, was definitely Tamizh's gain. And Vani was the best thing to have happened to tfm in ages.
Her first song in tamizh is said to be for 'Thaayum seiyum'- a film which doesn't seem to have seen the light of the day.
Lets now go year by year:
1973
1. Or Idam Unnidam- Veetukku vandha marumagal- TMS- SG.
This, by all accounts, is Vani's first song which was released. It starts like this:
VJ: Or idam, unnidam,
en thevayai naan ketpathu ver yaaridam
TMS: Melidam-ennidam
en manam maanidam
midhakkum sivakkum malargal sirikkum unnidam
A breezy duet. VVM starred AVM Rajan, Latha, Muthuraman etc. This song was picturised on AVMR and Latha. The film had another duet by AM Raja and Jikki- the opening lines seem to elude me just now.
2.Malar pol sirippathu pathinaaru- Sollathaan ninaikiren- MSV
KB's celluloid adaptation of Maniyan's novel (Ilavu kaatha kili?). Starred Sivakumar, Kamal, Srividya, Jayachitra, Subha, Jayasudha etc.
One of the very few films to have songs by 4 great singers- PS, SJ, LRE and VJ. (the other films I can think of- Ninaithaale inikkum-MSV and Thirukalyanam-IR). Of course, the MSV-SJ duet was the pick of the lot. The other songs being 'Pallavi endru mannanai'-PS,SJ and 'Kalyanam katcheri'-SPB-LRE.
VJ's song is for Jayasudha and her friends.
Malar pol sirippathu pathinaaru
manam pol parappathu pathinaaru
kannigai endroru paalaaru
kaal kondu nadappathu pathinaaru
Chorus- Sweet sixteen
sweet sixteen
Hark at VJ's play with the word'Sweet' as she repeats 'Sweet sixteen'. Its really sweet!
I think 1973 had only these 2 songs by VJ.

Coming to 1974, lets have a cursory glance at how the others fared this year. PS was continuing unfazed with lots of hits from films like Sivagamiyin Selvan, Kanmani Raja, Thirudi, Vani Rani, Thirumangalyam, Urimaikural, Roshakkari, Rajanagam etc. SJ, basking in her regained popularity, was not far behind, singing memorable numbers like 'Kanniley enna undu'-Aval oru thodarkathai, 'Konja neram ennai maranthen'- Sirithu vaazha vendum, 'Ennodu kannan yen pesavillai'-Thaai pasam, 'Anbumikka mapillaikku'-Engal Kula deivam, 'Ilamai naatiya salai'-Kalyanamaam kalyanam , 'Angey varuvathu yaaro'-Netru indru naalai etc. LRE gave some good songs like 'Mandhaara malarey'-Naan Avan illai, 'Adi ennadi ulagam'-Aval oru thodarkathai,'Aadikku pinne'-Sivagamiyin Selvan, 'Oorgolam pogindra'-Akkarai pachchai, and 'Marandhey pochu'-Aththaya Mamiya. Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, proved though it was 1974, she still could not be written off, by singing her way into the hearts of discerning music lovers.Who can forget her '74 songs like 'Ezhuthi ezhuthi pazhagi vandhen' and 'Therodum veedhiyile' from Gumasthavin Magal,'Thalaye nee vangaai' from Sisubalan, 'Sonnale vaai mankkum' from Thanga valayal and 'Kalyanam oru vizha' from Tiger Thathachari (for which film she was the MD as well)? Jikki testified that her voice was intact in 'Edhai ketpatho edhai solvatho' and 'Poomalai ondru'-Paththu maadha bandham. Bhanumathi sang her own songs, as usual, in Paththu maadha bandham and Thaai Pirandhaal. JJ too sang 2 songs- 'Iru maan vizhi pol'-Vairam and 'Chithira mandabathil'-Anbai thedi.
So lets come to VJ's songs this year:
1974
3. Malligai en mannan mayangum- Deergasumangali-MSV
VJ's first super hit, which made everyone sit up and take notice of her.
The film starred KRV, Muthuraman, Major, Pushpalatha, Sivakumar, Jayachitra, Jayasudha etc.
A good old 'Family' story, with its share of joy and sorrow. Other songs in the film were "Aayiram aayiram aandu munne'-SPB,PS & co and 'Deergasumangali vaazhga' - PS and MSV versions.
Muthu doesn't think too high of wife KRV's people, who are country bumpkins. When the whole set of them gatecrash into their house, Muthu finds that he has no place to sleep, and so must sleep in the open. He is miffed about it. KRV, sensing his mood, gently shakes the jasmine creeper, so that the flowers fall on him, and sings this lovely song to pacify him.
KRV, in a TV interview, said that this was her favourite song. Quite understandable!
Uma Ramanan, too gained by this song- in the sense that 'Malligai' along with'Thaththichellum muthu kannan sirippu' was the song which UR regularly sang to housefull halls in the initial years of AV Ramanan's performances!
4. Indha pennodu pirandhadhu- Samayalkaran-SJ-MSV
'Samayalkaran' starring Mu Ka Muthu was a shoddy remake of Rajesh Khanna's 'Bawarchi'. This song is a dance competition and sung by SJ and VJ:
Indha pennodu pirandhathu nadanam
ival kannodu pirandhathu nalinam
A famous song by Mu Ka Muthu from the same film'Sondhakkaranga enakku romba perunga'
1974 to be continued.
