I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz:
One of those albums is "Prem Pise" by Dashrath Pujari, right?? Well those songs are good, however very genuinely I do not call it "native or chaste Marathi". But her effort is good.
Are there any songs by her for Jitendra Abhisheki?
Also, if I may know, are u a Maharashtrian. And u have a family in Pune? Are u studying in North America.

avr I definitely praised your open mindedness. If you want to hear south Indian Music visit Music India online(just kidding) Yes U R right I am a DHCF-SJ. I love her and she loves me very much you know I always talk her through telepathy.

Hi AVR,
No, the album is not Prem Pise.
These are the titles:
Panduranga Vittala - Music by Keshav Badge
Keshavaraj Gaavun Geethi - Music by Keshav Badge
If you want to order these you can write to:
Bani Music Company
83 TTK Road Chennai 600 018 ( this is VJ's own music company - I hope the address is still the same - I am relying on the address on the ablum cover - these albums were released in May 1992).
You can also ask them for the other albums: Gita Govindam (Mahapatra) and Holi (Birju Maharaj).
Curiosity: what is DHCF....being a North American - some abbreviations are not current here....I guess it is a local thing?
Thanks for the Balanagamma site hint. I am not sure I want to hear just 90 sec audio clips...those can only leave you more frustrated!

Hi AVR,
thanks for the hard core clarification. I kinda figured it out myself...although in this part of the world we just say "Die Hard" fan ( the core is assumed!) - but it's good to have some knowledge about these shortcuts....
Did you listen to Karuna Cheiva? Click on the link provided by Neel (above).
Hope you have luck with the albums - write to Bani Music Co., - and then play the waiting game!
Naaz
PS: I read somewhere that Vani Jairam had a song in the Rajnikant film "Muthu" - is that true? Where (on the net) can I have a listen?

On account of the above reason, I must ask u one more question. Many years ago on Doordarshan there was a sports event "Bharathiyam", the title song of which was sung by VJ. It was just 3-4 lines but quite nice. And was the music of that by Ravi Shankar or Ananda Shankar.

Hi AVR:
I am a connoisseur of quality music. Vani Jairam is not a "populist" singer (thank god for that!). She is singer of immense range and versatility. She does not stoop to conquer - which is a statement of character, and confidence in her art.
I am also an admirer of Parveen Sultana and Anuradha Paudhwal.
You cannot "acquire" Class. Either you have it or you don't.
Vani Jairam has infinite Class.
Too bad, most listeners of film music these days have such an aversion to excellence!

Hi AVR,
I have not watched Doordarshan for a long, long time ( more than a decade, actually.)
Vani Jairam sang for Ananda Shankar in a tamil film ( the name of which escapes me) - but there were a few good duets with Yesudas in it. "Paruvam kanindhu vandha paavai evale" was one of them.
Have you heard Vani's songs for Vijayabhaskar in the tamil film " Saundaryame Varuga, Varuga" ?
"Iravil irandu paravailgal" and "Idho un kadhalin kanmani" are lesser heard gems.

Got the name of the Ananda Shankar film , AVR:
It is "Yaro Yezhudiya Kavithai" (directed by Shridhar. Ditto for "Saundaryame")

AVR,
"Fan" is an abbreviation for "fanatic".
I prefer admirer - it has more to do with appreciation and less to do with obsession.

OK admirer of AP. I'd run a mile away from her tapes and her admirers :-)
Anyway, coming back to VJ, I think she has had a very good association with Vijayabhaskar and KV Mahadevan, MS Viswanathan.
Even with Ilayaraja she has sung a few but exquisite melodies - notable among them are those Balanagamma songs (esp. "Manmadha raagangale") and also "en kalyAna vaibhogam".
Was "7 swarangalukkul" her first song in TFM?
- From: naaz ahmed (@ 24.76.127.63)
on: Tue Oct 30 12:54:45 EST 2001
Nope, Her first song was for a film by Shanker-Ganesh ( don't know the song or the film, actually) but the song that got her going in Tamil films was "Malligai En Manan Mayangum..." That was an MSV composition.
So Paudhwal does not push your buttons? She is a fine singer - I liked her earlier songs for Jaidev (Aarohi - TV) and Vanraj Bhatia. I have not heard her T-series Bhajans. Are they any good? Wrong question to the wrong person, I guess. Are you running a mile already?

The song for Bharatyam was composed by Pt.Ravi shankar. Though the song was only for a few mts. kind of a theme song, vani's voice is just amazing.

Naaz,
Sorry, I don't have any links for those songs. If I find any I will post it. Ramki&Mano used to have a Rare Songs site with some nice VJ songs including "Paruvam Kaninthu". It has been down for a while now.

Guys,
This site has far too few discussions on VJ. Thats unfortunate, because I want to know more about her songs in all the 4 southern languages. Though this is Tamil DF, I wonder whether a tiny listing of her Malayalam,Kannada,Telugu songs would be allowed.
Naaz:
Know, I do not like AP at all, least of all those T Series bhajans. As far as the remakes of old Hindi melodies, I would say she has spoilt if not destroyed them completely. Anyway, I suppose this thread is dedicated to VANI JAYARAM only.

Hi there,
Thought I'd add to the list as well:
Alamarathukili
Velli Kizhamai Vidigazhai
Kungumakolangal Kothai Kondada
Thayaki Vechcha En Thangame
Chandira Pirai Parthaen
Agayam Kanadha Sooryodhayam
Neerada Neram Nalla Neram
Sugam Aayiram En Ninaivile
Oru Puram Vedan Maru puram Nagam
Aadum ini thotilinil Ayindhu Thingal Ponal
Idhu Undhan Veetu Kili Thaan
Maasi Masa Kadaisiyile Machchan Vantharu
Iravum Pagalum Enakku Un Mel Kannottam
Uyirin Nilave Azhuva Koodathu
Manjal Vanna Roja
Manamagale Un Manavarai Kolam....
More as and when I think of them....
This is great - just to find like-minded, quality music connoisseurs...Such a blessing!!
Thanks,
Naaz

A query for Neel:
Was there a solo by Vani Jairam in Vandichakkaram? I remember the duet: Devi Vandha Neram....something tells me that there was also a solo...am I mistaken? This memory thing is such a messy business!
Here's another rare, seldom heard gem from the film Lottery Ticket:
Avaniyai Kondada Vandhan Aasaiyil Poo Choodi Nindren (Music: L. Vaidhyanathan?)
One more rare number (did not make it to the film) but a very unusual number for VJ - and she does a good (respectable) job for a carbaret song:
Idhu Rosa Poovu, Vandhu Leysa Neevu
(Film: Oru Kaithiyin Diary)
Keep the list going - we could have quite the encyclopedia of VJ solo's here and could also advertise it as QuickResource for all those who are interested!

Naaz Ahmed:
It would be great service to me if u can post links to the songs mentioned. I would be really grateful.
Also "L. Vaidhyanathan" - u mean the famous Carnatic composer? Somewhere very early in this thread (about 2-3 years ago) there has been a mention of a song by Veena Maestro Chitti Babu.
The no. of classical composers she has worked with is amazing. Rather, I'd say the work is amazing :-)
For cabaret song, we could consider "Thanimayil yaarival". Even "happiest moment" and "rasikannae" could be considered cabaret songs.
