Veteran MSV survived in the industry for quite a long time when comparing drastic downfall of Maestro, right after the ARR's entry. Why?

Iam a crazy IR fan, but I think MSV was doing good even after IR came in. In fact MSV's music changed a bit for good, mostly because he was doing for younger actors like rajini and kamal.
Most of my MSV favorites are from this period.
varumai niram siggappu
simla special
ninaithale innikkum
pollathavan
antha ezhu natkal
agni satchi
thilu mullu
(cinesouth database has 248 movies after 1976 for MSV)
Only mistake is he didnt get along with new wave directors like mahendran, bharathiraja etc, who were making trend of the days.
Still I beleive Raja too makes great music till date.

Downfall of MSV was much sharper than IR.
Are you implying that IR has had a downfall??

naradhar;
that is really a good question. i will make it clear. i wrote this line based on some others assumption that IR has fallen after ARR's entry. Well..IR rides on his own matchless track as ever..That is the simple truth. Kumudam has posted the opinion of people on IR vs ARR match. >70% people IR is an uncomparable genius of all times!!

Do you still believe in opinion polls?
Vijay_ Venkat - MSV did devotionals which all of us know are popular hits! Krishnagaanam is one simple example. But I do not know how you have the patience to listen to the devotional albums by IR all sung flabbily out of tune without a life by IR and rarely by his daughter Thaarini.
This is an open truth and not to bash IR. MSVs longevity and struggle for survival despite horse-racing producers running behind IR in his hay days are evident with the melodies he made in 80-90s, which had an adaptable musical trend in MSVs composing, including IRs director Bhagyaraj who did 'Antha Ezhu naatkal' with MSVs melodies. I like IRs music, but Iam not mad after him. Tfm is an ocean and we should enjoy and accept all good ones as good.
AR Rahman is entirely a different phenomenon by himself. He has gone to the musical extreme internationally. Comparing him with IR or MSV is entirely a cheap thought. He is something like MS with a Venkatesa Suprabhatham , Ghantasala with a Bagavath geetha, Sirkasi Govindarajan with Abirami Andhadi and SPB with Lingashtakam if compared with devotionals. His compositions are unique and enjoyable. People are not fools to listen to trash.

I am controlling my tongue sir! Otherwise I would use unparliamentary language for this! If u stand before any true IR fan after saying it is out of tune and lifeless voice, you will be killed! IR's "Bikshaippaathiram" from Ramanamaalai, have u heard? If u don't cry after hearing it, u r not fit be a devotee of God! You are a totally biassed person! How can Krishnagaanam be a greater hit than Geethanjali? U confirm with audio people!

"I just said that it didn't click because the flavour and fragrance that was there in IR's music in 80 simply lost its smell in 90's"
U would not have said this if u listened to the songs of IR in 90's with the same mood u had while in His 80's! Thats why true IR fans only can identify the truth!

I am deeply pained by your ignorance and arrogance in accepting IR and in your partiality and sympathy towards MSV and overglorification of ARR!
I AM NOT GOING TO POST IN THIS THREAD ANYMORE! BYE! I HOPE U ALL R HAPPY NOW!

vijay venkatraman, cool down...
This guys is real crap, all he talks in like is krishnaganam, sirkali and his devotional, some london recording by EMI, arr and his international(???) achivements. He has repeated it 1000 times now. just ignore, I too replied few times and now left him barking. He is worried no one used sirkazhi well, I dont know what his beloved MSV was doing to his beloved sirkazhi G in 70s by singing all aseriri type songs himself.
For everyone's info Geethanjali and all IR's devotional album are more of private albums he dedicated to his devotees. There was not even much publicity given for them. This not 'hawa hawa ..ayyapa ayyappa' kind made in november and sold in december stuff. I find these realy refreshing after all those stale bhajans (a gang repeating same line again and again to torture God).
I dont have sympathy towards MSV, but I wanted to say he was doing pretty well in late 70s.

Mr. Chechu;
I did not say opinion polls..I said opinions. Go and read the opinions of Individuals. Kumudham has published more than 100 opinions of people and you must read and enjoy (Hard for ARR fans) yourself and try to digest (if possible)how many of them like IR over ARR. ARR fans, try not to visit that site as you may get offended so often (vayithle pulyie karaikkum). But that is the simple truth.

IR (ARR) is better than ARR (IR) in all aspects. So what? Should ARR (IR) stop scoring music or should he just hang himself or should all those who listen to his songs kill themself!! Niruthungappa unga comparisonaiyum bashingaiyum.....

Thanga Mudiyale;
I wish you tell kumudam also the same thing. It is good that you don't like this comparison. Kumudam additionally says that there was an overwhelming response for such a comparison and many nearly 70% (or more) clearly express that IR to be their favorite. No reason to tak this matter to heart. This is just a statistical information. Nobody can dictate ARR's life..He can only himself decide. For that matter anybody...So I suggest you to to just read various interesting comments by different people and "take this matter easily".

FliFlo,
I have nothing against people expressing their favorite composer or comparing musical aspects of 2 different MDs. But your comments - Vayithle pulyie karaikkum, Hard for ARR fans etc etc made me go over the top. I mean why should somebody's preferences/tastes affect others. If IR enjoys such overwhelming support, then it is indeed good for TFM as well as IR. Why should you take that to bash other MD's? anyway, I'm cool now. take it easy policy does work :)

If VPK offends you then I am sorry! Vaithle Puliye Karikkum...is a warning sign. That's not bashing anybody. That's just to mean that some (especially ARR fans) may not like to read everyhting written there. I just gave an indication/warning.

Perhaps at the time of IR's emergence, there's no Internet or email or IT technology for that matter. So, IR's glory was been able to celebrated inside INDIA (or even Malaysia & Singapore) only. But now, with all this mediating devices (I mean IT), the emergence of ARR has been able to spreaded over the globe, of course, very well. ARR's glory is a major contribution of the western acoustician and engineers. ARR uses them (as the admittedly, first person) to his benefit.
Next year will mark the 10th anniversary of ARR's arrival in Tamil CIne. One challange that ARR is supposed to face is, one full album without any extreme use of sound engineering. Pure sound, real acoustics. What happens..? That will clear the sky for the debate, unstopped, still hazy discussion over who's the leader, IR or ARR. Thanx.

NVD,
What you say is interesting. Will ARR ever do a pure acoustic mix, without special effects ? I think he will not. Even if he did it will not clear the sky/debate like you think. Here's my view/opinion on this - there are certain aspects of music, which are beyond music. Certain songs invoke/affect you very deep. Some do not. Though both songs can pass music scrutiny. This I think is the essense/flavor of the composer. This I think is one of the reasons some really classical music composers or certain compositions from them were not popular. So apart from the sonic effect, music effect you also have an emotional effect.
BTW, I am going to give an example from IR. (Dont think I am saying anything about ARR here). Listen to the song 'mannava, mannava mannadhi mannan allava'. Note how the baby's crying has been mixed in. Evan, If you dont know the plot (somebody trying to kill the baby) this song will affect you deeply probably hinting at the ominous prospect facing the baby.
