bb :-)
We are also getting only Sun tv here:( I think Sindhu-Bhairavi part-2 will be on Jaya TV, after KB's Anni gets over. Vocalist Anuradha Suresh Krishnamoorthi plays Suhasini's role.

bb,
'Sahana' is in JayaTV !
You are right abt. YGM, KB could have opted to wait little longer to get Sivakumar himself after his 'aNNaamalai' assignment is over ...

Digression:
Rayil Sneham came out in early 1990. Title song was catchy but screenplay did move slowly befitting a TV serial in sharp contrast to KB's pulsating style of screenplay for the celluloid screen. I was moving to class 9 then and the story didnt make much news during the lunch break then..main reason being the wave of good serials during that period. I guess Rail Sneham was a Wednesday 730 starrer that followed 'Iravil Oru Pagal' starring Revathi, Suresh Menon, Charlie, 'Rajamma'(?? that ubiquitous Malayali old lady). IOP was a big hit(remember the KJY number 'Aasai Nilave, Pesum Kanave'..and also the 'Salim, Mohammmmmmmmed Salim character!!) and RS did fall in its shadow for a while.
On Thu 730, from Oct 89, there was Akilan Chittirapaavai, again running to packed audiences. This was followed by the drab and dismal Shakti-90!!
DD lost its charm after that, a few YG Mahendran appearances nothwithstanding.

continuing the digression..
Prabhu,
Rail sneham though being slow was really a good serial during those days.. it had the KB's directorial touch (as my dad would say) and had the usual 'muranpadugal' that KB is famous for...
I think the heroine will live with nizhalgal ravi and they would act as husband and wife... though she would have been molested by someone else... (i remember only bits and pieces of this one)
Iravil oru pagal was a good thriller to watch at that time, the rajamma character was played by sukumari and we used to count the days for the next episode.. 'Aasai nilave' was by jayachandran and not by KJY i guess... Another famous serial at that time was 'Ivala en Manaivi' starring chitra, sarath babu and nizhalgal ravi.. This serial also had a decent title song, but was not as good as 'rayil sneham'.. I happened to watch the re-telecast of 'ivala en manaivi' and 'iravil oru pagal' in some channel 3 years back and I was wondering how did I really love these serials..DD has really given good serials those days like these 3... there was another serial called 'tholaindhu ponavargal' and 'neela maala' which were also very famous...
end dig...

tholaindhu pOnavargaL was a sa.kandhasamy novel, based on 4 schoolmates who grow apart and end up in different social strata. One of the friends wants to meet others and relive the nostaligic past, how this happens is the rest of the story. The novel was brilliant, and the serial was good too. Rajesh played the main role. The serial moved back and forth in time, and featured realistic rustic youngsters to play the friends in flashback. Kind of a precursor to azhagi. i liked the serial then.

'Tholaindhu Ponavargal'..wow...thanks for reminding..superb serial..Rajesh,one of the four friends tries to make a get together and finally only two will show up i think..one guy will be a drunkard..one will try to join in army or police..
As bb said, the childhood days are well picturised..i feel like azhagi's adoloscent parthiban looked similar to tholainthu ponavargal's adoloscent Rajesh in appearence..both are dark and slim..

Song of the Day: engO pirandhavaraam from bommai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/engo.rm
- After listening to yesterday's song, SK reminded me of this wonderful sahana song. This is from the film bommai, composed by veeNai S.Balachander. This is a melodious number, sung by P.Suseela. A must-listen for PS fans.
SK himself writes on this song:
engO piRandhavarAm is a beautiful song composed by S Balachander. It comes in the movie Bommai. The movie itself is an ordinary one and the song
situation is also an ordinary one (L Vijayalakshmi is shown learning Bharathanatyam). But SB filled the movie by his music with some very good songs and bgm. SB also did story, screenplay and direction. (This is the only movie where all the artistes involved in the movie are actually introduced during the titles as their names come up; so you can catch a glimpse of a very very young Jesudhas and a young P Suseela.) Coming back to the song, it is mainly a melodious dance number in Sahana raga, wonderfully sung by PS. (Her strength is in low pitches and so the song is perfectly suited for her.) I had a chance to meet PS last December and I talked to her about this song. I asked her whether, in such carnatic classical-based songs, she had to learn about the nuances of the particular raga before singing it. She said there was nothing like that. SB sang to her what he had composed and she reproduced it ditto, exactly as he wanted... without thinking about the raga or any thing else.

- Bommai was also the first film for K.J.Yesudas. He sang "neeyum bommai naanum bommai".
- S.Balachandar also composed for nadu iravil. He acted in Penn, in which chandrababu sang playback for him!

I think Tholaindhu Ponavarval had a very decent title instrumental piece. Anyone remembers who was the MD?

Friends,
VeeNai SB had acted in 'nadu iravil' also as the pipe wielding Dr Saravanan (our Saravanan to note!!!!). Till the end of the film, the needle of suspicion points towards him as the serial killer, until it finally settles on VS Raghavan!

continuing the digression on good serials, there was one more serial called SIRAI acted by rajesh (the character role cinema artist). it too had very good title song. infact the vaazhaipazham joke of karagattakkaaran is a remake of "kadalai urundai" joke that happens betweeen two jail inmates in this sirai serial.
one thrusday 8pm serial called "silandhi valai" of YGM also had a very good title song. i vaguely remember that it has a thriller kind of story.
to the best of my knowledge "Dr. Narendranin vinodha vazhakku" of "roopavaahini" (srilankan tv). is the first most liked serial. i think it came during early 80s.

Thanks bb and sk for this song.
Other songs in Bommai- besides Engo pirandhavaraam by PS and KJY's Neeyum bommai- Kannai irttuthu by Harharasubramaniam & co, Kai arugey kani irukka by Renuka and Thathi thathi by LRE.
The BGM for Bommai was by DB Ramachandran, who also assisted SB in the songs.
Other films which had music by SB: Idhu Nijama-1948, Kaithi-1951, Avana Ivan-1962 and Nadu Iravil-1970. (He also directed these films)
I have heard the songs that SB sang in Idhu Nijamaa, Kaithi and Rajambal. He had a fanatstic voice.
Besides, SB had also acted in films like Aaraichimani, Devaki, Rajambaal and Maragatham (allathu Karunkuyil Kunrathu Kolai, where he played Sivaji's father!)
He also directed Andha Naal, part of Bhoolaga Rambai and Aval Yaar.
He was indeed a multi-faceted genius.
C V, do you remember how we met while watching 'Nadu Iravil' in National Theatre-West Mambalam in 1970?!!!!!!!!!!!
(After all, I am a grand old man to whom veedu is telling po po and kaadu is telling vaa vaa!)

sk, though KJY's first song in tamil was indeed 'Neeyum bommai', his first song to be released was 'Aasai vandha pinne'- an enchanting KJY-B Vasantha duet in Konjum Kumari-1963, MD-Veda. Bommai came in 1964.

Kupps, I think the serial in which Rajesh acted as a jailor was called 'Dhaagam' and not Sirai.
Roopa acted as his wife. The kadalai urundai joke was between Kovai Anuradha and another inmate.
Prabhu/Thiru- how could you forget that great guest appearance by Ranjini in Iravil Oru Pagal?
Another serial I used to enjoy was 'Paramaartha Gurum Seedargalum' (!), though my parents liked 'Nallathor Veenai' (based on Parisukku Po) stg. Lakshmi, Nizhalgal Ravi and ARS. Another serial which won critical accalaim was Karippumanigal.

'Rayil sneham' was based on a novel written by vasanthi. KB reintroduced savitha of NizhalgaL as Amudha and she did a fantastic job as Bhavani aka vijaya. Purushotaman and bhavani will remain 2 unforgettable characters of chinnathirai. The serial had only 13 episodes(thank god we didnt have the concept of mega serial in late 80s(89 to be exact)).

Digress:
Just to place things in perspective, it was from Pongal 87 that Madras DD started relaying to other districts, which were till then watching Delhi DD's old dinosaur KrishiDarshan(sponsored in style by Nuwaakron) at the 7 pm slot. This was as big an explosion as Sun TV's bow in Apr 1993, for it effectively ended the monopoly of Hindi programs. Friday 730's Here is Crazy ran well. Later on, by June Paramaarthaguru took over the Mon 730 slot and was followed by Ladies Hostel and Ambigayin Kalyaanam(both very good suspenseful ones). At that same time, Silanthi Valai came on Thurs I think and featured stories with thrilling and unexpected endings. It was at this period that news reader Varadarajan and Padmini too appeared in a serial with a fairly decent run. By early 88 Thursday's slot went to Flight 714, a hilarious comedy, which was followed by Solladi Sivasakthi.
Meanwhile a serial(Hindi) on Jayakanthan's stories appeared on Fridays on National Network.
A touch of sophistication had come in by mid 88, Delhi Ganesh made the Tue 740 plays his own featuring time and again. Also appeared as an inspector in Dinakar Deepa Dilip, a boring mystery series(supposedly). In fact Srikkanth chipped in with his "All the way for four" on Wednesdays 730 till Jan 89. Another serial 'Galatta Kudumbam' (starring Srividhya?) had a good run in early 89. The serials around this time were pretty so-so but by late 89, a nice crop of serials emerged. Iravil Oru Pagal especially had superb BGM outlining the many suspenseful moments. I guess the best phase must be 89-90 for tamil serials.
Late 90 had a serial on the freedom struggle featuring Pandian and Nazar. This too was well received. By 91, Mon 730 had Thayumaanavan, a serial with Chandrashekhar in the lead. After that though, I guess the impact of serials had reduced, with the 90s bringing on a fast-paced lifestyle and the invasion of satellite channels in 91 sounding the death-knell for serials on tamil DD. Pretty soon prime time progs like Jodiporutham and Vaarthai Vilayaatu stole the limelight from DD.
Saravanan, I watched IOP towards the end and missed super *'s appearance :)
