Song of the Day: indha veeNaikku theriyaadhu from rayil snEham.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/inthaveenai.rm
- ok, this is not a song in TFM. This is from the TV serial Rayil Sneham (Balachander's first big hit in TV), and is close to TFM (ellaam oru extrapolation thaan :) ). I was thrilled to listen to this song after a looooong time.
- The song is set in Sahana, the main character of the serial. The heroine's mother names her Sahana after the raagam, and sings this song to her. There is a male version of this song too. I don't remember who the actress was. The guy who later takes care of the heroine was played by NizhalgaL Ravi.
- PaarththEn SiriththEn was featured in SOTD earlier. It is also set in Sahana.
- Songs in Sahana Raagam: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/984.07.57.12.html
- I think this song was composed by V.S.Narasimhan. I am not sure. Sung by Chitra.
- Apparently, KB is going to direct a sequel to "Sindhu Bhairavi", on TV, titled "Sahana".

i think the music is by V.S.narasimhan... I remember listening to a slower version of the same song... does anyone know who sang the male version? was it KJY?

This song is by V.S.Narasimhan...KJY sang the male version..The title song for the serial is also good...I think it goes like "Mudhalum illathathu, ithu mudivum illathathu "...The serial
is set in this place called Attakatti near Coimbatore...I spent a few days in Attakatti several summers ago...Very nice place...
Lakshminarayanan Srirangam Ramakrishnan in his
classical Ilayaraja series mentions
"We have two popular songs in Sahana that had a tremendous impact on the common rasika. Parthaen sirithaen (mahakavi kaalidaas) and indha veenaiku in rayil sneham. The former tuned by K.V.Mahadevan and latter by V.S.Narasimhan.
I hear that there is a song "rukku rukku" in Sahana in ovvai shanmukhi. BTW, Sahana is a janyam of Harikaambojhi (28th melam) with Sa Ri2 Ga3 Ma1 Pa Ma1 Da2 Ni2 Sa and Sa Ni2 Da2 Pa Ma1 Ga3 Ma1 Ri2 Ga3 Ri2 Sa. Strangely Illayaraja does not have any Sahana product from his industry!"

Thanks for the wonderful song bb,
Vijay,
'Sahana' TV Serial MD is Mohan Vaidya (Songs) and Rohan (BGM) ...
VeLiya sonnaa uthaippeenga, After KB's association with KR in 'Album' and the fact that KR has no 'big' movies in his name now, I was expecting him to be the MD of this teleserial - He Could have done some justice to SindhuBairavi Part 2 !
Anyway, the title song (Sung by Sudha Ragunathan and BalaMuraLi Krishna !) is good - VeeNa piece in the beginning of the song is very similar to todays' SOTD - Intha veeNaikkuth theriyaathu !
AthaRkumael enakku ondRum theriyaathu :-))

Rail Sneham Title song with lines
"Mugame illathathu" was by P Jayachandran.
This serial was asusual KB stuff (uh!).I think the actress name was Kadhambari (or was it her screen name?)Nizhalgal Ravi did a very dignified job.VSN s score was simple and neat.Krishnan played the KB s staple "neighbour" character well. The serial was hit anyways for the song and ofcourse people had no other satelite alternatives!
Songs in Sahana are rare may be due to the fact that the Raga Lakshana is very unique and the listener gets the feel of the raga immediately. So the MD requires to put that extra to get something different. Also the danger of sounding repetitive might have stopped the MD s from going in for too many Sahana numbers. All you can count
is one each by KVM ,MSV,VeenaiBalachander.(but Sriram Lakshmanan had written about a Sahana Ganga Gauri song by MSV which many would not have heard for a long time.So it is a SOTD request.)
CHO once commented about his lack of CM knowledge"the only Raga i can identify is Sahana".In his Vandemataram when DeviLalitha plays the veena CHO comments sarcastically"Romba nerama Sahana vasikka muyarchi panre polairukku.AAna thirumba thirumba Harikambodhi than ketkarathu".
Do the CM s classify it under Gana Ragam?ie one which provides good scope for alapanai?

bb- thanks for this song. Takes me back to my college days when 'Rayil Sneham' created a stir. I also don't remember the actress name, but wasn't her screen name Bhavani?
OISG- I think the title song was by KJY, are you sure it was by JC?
I don't know anything about Ragam etc, but was the song SL mentioned from Ganaga Gowri- Aadhinaadhan Ketkindraan? If so, that is indeed a lovely duet by TMS-SJ. Another great song from GG was 'Azhagiya Megangal'-SJ, set to Amirthavarshini ragam.

Saravanan
If u are not sure, then I am sure!
Ganga Gauri s another hit was "Andharangam Naan Ariven" by PBS-SJ which is predominantly set in Bageshwari .Prob this could be PBS s latest song with MSV?
In 50s many movies had dramas within them. For eg the Therukoothu in Pudhayal. We must be having a sahana or two among them.Being a raga depicting Karunya Rasam must surely find place in a stage drama for "Thogayarah" singing.
Ram
Thanx.

Friends,
I always thought the following are Sahana (Sometimes, I tend to get mixed up with Anandhabairavi!). Pl. correct me if I am wrong!:
1. 'thannanthanimaiyilE udal thaLLaadum vayathinilE'-School Master
2. 'urugidum vELaiyilum nalla oLi tharum mezhuguvarththi'-Film???
3. 'nalvaazhvu naam vaazha varam vENdum srIdEvi ellOrkkum ellaamum vENdum, kaN pOnRa maNavaaLan kallaana maangalyam....' Film???
4. 'aiyaraaththupppoNNu sonnaa kEttukkOdaa ambi, aaththukkaariyaa enna EththukkOdaa nambi' Film??
5.'kaaNNan manathu kal manthenRO kaaNdeepam nazhuva vittaay....' from 'karNan'

CV
1,3 are 100% AnandhaBhairavi (both by PS-MSV combo)
4. is Hamsadhwani (VijayaBaskar-LR anjali -Ramesh Duet) from UngaL Viruppam.
5. that is Sahana.....starting from "Ennai Arinthai" to "Dharmam Vaazhga".
AB finds a place in Tamil Isai,Devarams,PaN from 7th Century AD.If at all AB can be mixed up with another one it is "Reethi Gowlai" and not Sahana.RG and AB are Vakra Ragas with G2.As mentioned earlier Sahana being HK Janyam goes for G3 and not G2.

Good to see this raise some nostalgia. Saravanan, college days during rayil sneham? I think that was when you probably retired, given your knowledge of old songs :-)
I liked the character of kavithalaya krishnan as the neighbor and his wife (what's her name? sevappu rukmaNi in 1 veedu 2 vaasal).
NagaS, which channel carries the TV serial Sahana? We are getting sun tv here, I guess that is not the channel, due to the KB-Sun TV fight.

NagaS, KR would have been a good choice for Sindhu Bhairavi II. KR should try something different, since he is not able to make it big in films.
I find it difficult to imagine YGM as JKB. He doesn't have the "gambeeram" that Sivakumar brought in (remember "Yochana"?) YGM is a vazha vazha kozha kozha actor, IMO :-) It will be interesting to see if Sulakshana's character is criticized for taking JKB in again after his affair and not getting divorced.

OISG :-)
Another good sing in GG was TMS's 'Pichaandi ennai kandu pichai idungal'.
PBS has sung for MSV later too- even as late as 1982: 'Oru paarvai pothum'- Vadaimaalai. (It is perhaps the only PBS-VJ duet in tamizh, though
they have sung many duets in kannada).
The film Pareetchaikku Neramachu-also 1982, opens with a shot of Sivaji praying in the beach and then Parthasarathi temple, while you hear PBS's asareeri 'Shudha Brahma Parathpara Ram'. Later, when Sivaji & Sujatha formally adopt the second YGM, you hear PBS's asareeri again -"Dharmamunnu'.
Aiyarathu Ponnu sonnathu Ungal Veetu Kalyanathil, not Unagal Viruppam!
CV- Urugidum velaiyilum is from Dhagam, and Nal vaazhvu naam vaazha is from Vettukku Veedu.
