Mayangugiral oru madhu has a song "Samsaram enbathu veenai".there was a movie by that name starring AV Ramanan i think.
A very delicate situation for the younger Nathi/Nathanar to her Anni to GO AHEAD.Of course with Gemini as her husband Savithri automatically qulaifies to teach the finer points!KD as usual gets into mood.Savithri sings more or less on similar lines in "aayiram iravugal varuvathundu" in Karpagam.Ilai marai Kai marayaga ,ehtaivdia arputhamga yaravathu sollamudiyumo.
The song "Vaarayen thozhi" by LRE also has the similar feel."Malaratha penmai malarum"....
Good choices.Good luck!

bb- good selection of songs again.
Addendum on Randor Guy’s excellent write-up on Krishna Bakthi- 1948.
The film also had in its cast CS Jayaraman. The memorable Katha Kaalakshebam mentioned (Krishna HariGovinda Murare) by PUC had cheeky interpretations of who is a ‘dasi’-. There were some stunning songs by PA Periayanayaki like ‘Kannan varuvaarodi’, ‘Bhoomiyin meley Sathyabaamai enpol yaarumillai’ and ‘Thamarai senkann vadhanaa’.
Coming to ‘Saarasam’ – I believe the MD for the song is SV Venkataraman. (The film had two MDs- GR and SVV- I am not sure if Kunnakkudi Venkatrama Iyer too was involved)
Wonder at the lyricists who compared the moonbeam to the heroine’s face repeatedly- Papanasam Sivan wrote ‘Vadhaname chandrabimbamo’, while Udumalai Narayanakavi penned ‘Mugham chandrabimbam’, Suratha differed only slightly- he wrote ‘Nilavin nizhalo un vadhanam’!
‘Mayangugiraal oru maadhu’ is again a song of eternal charm. The situation is just as described by OISG. ‘padithavathal thaan adai marandhuvittaal’ refers to MN Rajam, who comes as a doctor- but still a woman in her first night – is naturally bashful, and is teased by sister-in-law Savithri, who guesses what is going on inside---! (MNR giving some ridiculous expressions, whilst Sivaji, smoking stylishly, seems to enjoy his sister’s taunts)
Rajamani Pictures’ Pasamalar was a winner all the way- KP Kottarakkara’s heart-rending story, Arurdas’s emotion-charged dialogues, Kannadasan’s immortal lyrics set to wonderful music by V-R and rendered soulfully by TMS, PBS, PS, K Jamunarani and LRE, and brilliant performances by the Nadigar and Nadigayar thilakams.
The ‘Pa’ series films by A Bhimsingh deserve a place of pride in the history of Tamizh films- Pathibakthi-1958, Bagappirivinai-1959, Padikkatha Medhai-1960, Pava Mannippu, Pasamalar, Paalum Pazhamum-all 1961, Paarthaal Pasi Theerum, Padithaal Mattum Podhuma, Bandha Pasam-all 1962, Paar Magale Paar-1963, Pachai Vilakku-1964, Pazhani-1965 and Paalaadai-1967. (I don’t remember exactly if ‘Paadhugappu’-1970 was also directed by AB).
Except for Padikka Medhai and Paalaadai (both KVM), all the films had music by V-R.
And Kannadasan was the chief lyricist of the series, although there were a few songs by others- Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram (Pathibakthi-all songs & Bagappirivinai), A Maruthakasi (Bagappirivinai & Padikkadha Medhai), Mayavanathan (Padithaal Mattum Podhuma & Bandha Pasam) and Thanjaivaanan (Paalaadai)
OISG- I too remember the AV Ramanan starrer ‘Samsaram Enbathu Veenai’- it had a solo by AVR, which was quite popular for some time- the opening line eludes me just now, though the second line is ‘En rasigaiyena vandhavaley’.

:) Must have been an error during fast typing! Please correct it.
One interesting thing to be noticed in the picturization..
There is a nice smiling photo of Savithri on a desk near the bed. At some point during the song, Sivaji can be seen putting that photo downwards on the desk (he does it with a smile) as if to say he doesn't want the photo to see the proceedings in the room!

I saw this film in 1970 and my memory says it was directed by the 'thiraiyulaga jaambavaan' A Bhimsingh!

Song of the Day: maan kaNda sorgangaL from 47 naatkaL.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maan.rm
- A couple of days back, a thread was started on the movie 47 naatkaL, and a good discussion followed. I had not heard "maan kaNda sorgangaL" before, and I liked the song once I heard it.
- Sung by SPB. MD: MSV. Lyrics: Kannadasan.

Great choice bb! The beats, the bass work everything is noteworthy. The song somehow seems to have a totally different feel from the other MSV songs which came at that time. Thanks to vivdh bharati I had a chance to listen to this song back in the early 80s and then hunted it down later with the help of DF. If I remember right, I think the picturization was crappy with Chiranjeevi dancing with some foreign extra while Jayapradha watches from a distance.

Till then "Asareeri" songs for pathos situations were the favourite grounds for Seergazhi and MSV himeself.(that reminds me of the Sakunthalam natakam by SG & LRE in Engiruntho VanthaL & Veru idam thedi povalo in SNSM by VJ)
MSV, not well trained in WCM, tries to get the "international effect" at the end of pallavi and succeeds largely and the synth effect is noticbale all thru the song.the accompaniement that follows after SPB sings "ThaLatha Noie kondaL eppothu" would have been a female humming earlier.........MSV did change with changing times, but did not change at the required pace.
My usual polambal is this song was not noticed by "Vimarsana Kuzhu" of Vikatan and BALYou of Kumudam.(Anyway none cared about Idhayam,Savi,Thai reviews then!)
Can someone explain the "thalam"/"Rhythm pattern" for the III & IV charanams which sounds unique.(Does it sound on the same lines of "Anbenum" from the movie "Chiranjeevi" *ing Sivaji)
Sk
To watch a Man s "NaNam"(Dharamsangadam as well!) see Sivaji s expression in "Vaaryen thozhi".
Saravanan
MNR s expressions...???Pavam! avanga Villi role seithu seithu ,lost ground on these situations!!

thanks bb for this song- indha paattoda arumai ippo puriyuthu.
Like Vijay, I too remember hearing it in my childhood on Vividh Bharathi- but I used to feel irritated when it was featured in Thenkinnam, as being a very long song, it meamt the program would have one song less!
OISG- some of MSV's great asareeris 'Sollathaan Ninaikiren' (how wonderfully the song portrays the feelings of the three sisters and Sivakumar, and how understandingly MSV and SJ sing!), and the two great songs in Avargal 'Angum ingum paathai undu'-SPB , and the best of them all-'Kaatrukkenna Veli'-SJ - you feel as though Anu's (Sujatha) heart, bursting with joy, is talking to you!
MSVye paadina asareerla 'Edharkkum oru kaalam undu', 'Vasanthangal varum munne', 'Kudumbam oru kadhambam'and 'Aalukkoru thedhi vechu' stand out anyday.
Btw, Sakunthalam nadagam (Engirundho vandhaal) is by Seergazhi and--P Leela (a song that she sang after some years of no opportunities in tamizh, again to be heard only in Sri Sivasutha-Karpoora Mullai-1991)
Reg.MNR-indha paatte paravillai, compared to the atrocious expressions in 'Kaalai vayasu kattana sizesu'-Deivappiravi! Not to say that she was a mediocre actress- her performances in supporting roles in films like Mahadevi, Sivagangai Seemai, Kallum Kaniyagum and Arangretram are memorable. However, in my opinion, she was a wrong choice in Paavai Vilakku- the character envisaged by Akilan demanded something more--
