ON 47 Natkal:
I remember an interview with K.Balachander where he said that the reason the film didn't set the ticket-counter trilling was the expectation created by the novel. "A clash of images" he termed it, that of the novelist and that of the director.
Personally, I felt that the translation from page to screen didn't succeed for obvious reasons.
The novel, even sentimental as it was, had its a feminist undertext. The character Vaishali was depicted as an unqestioning "victim," and her predicament one that most tamil middle-class girls find themselves in when they reach a marriagable age.
First and crucial mistake: Jaya Pradha in the film was not a girl.
Chiranjeevi's antagonist also turned out to be cast in the Rajnikanth mould of "Avargal."
I beleive the same film was either dubbed, or shot simultaneously in Telegu. Hence, the terrible accident of the aforementioned actors in the film. A novel so community specific, when seen through the presence of JP and C (and SB and RP) - seemed more telegu than tamil. Not surprisingly, the "community" element was completely lost in the film. Tamils said Telegu. And Telegus said Tamil. Both languages gave it a cold-shoulder at the box-office.
The most important element that could never have been possible on screen was the luxury Sivasankari had every week to explore her characters, to chart their interiors in a "day by day" sense. The film replaced this with a song (or a background theme song,) which gave you a sense of gaps and robbed the suspense. Rama Prabha's pick-pocket was hysterical.
Coming to think of it, it was a no-go from the very outset. But KBs courage knew no bounds in those days. He even gave us another such exercise with Rudra Veena / Unnal Mudiyum Thambi. What else could you call it?
Saravanan -
I had the misfortune of seeing Ranuva Veeran. It was trauma one can never be rid of :-)

AFAIK, 47 natkal was first made in telugu as 47 rojulu and later dubbed/remade into tamil. I may be wrong but this is what I remember. The movie was probably not a commercial success even in AP, but it went well with the critics in terms of name and fame. Chiranjeevi was playing quite a few characters with a heavy negative touch to it for quite sometime. "Idhi kadha kaadu" (Avargal in tamil) is another movie in this category. I thought he acted quite well with some punchy dialogues and good action as well. May be it wasn't all that great in tamil!

Did Chiranjeevi do Rajnikanth's role (from Avargal) in the telegu version?? I just mentioned that for their similarity...had no idea that was indeed the case! (was it?)

Yup, Chiranjeevi was the one who played the saddist husband of Jayasudha playing darts and showing off his villainy. He played that role to perfection. Kamal was his usual, good acting and funnily accented telugu (but telugus loved him as an actor and still do). I think the third guy was Sarathbabu. It was a memorable movie.

how is the movie different from text? do you agree that the director has compressed some of the story in the novel in a song sequence? why has he done that? is it an advantage? pls reply. really need the reply to compare the 47 days-text and movie-47 natkal.it'll be nice if could give me more differences between the text and the movie.
