Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Saravanan:
You are rite, Thaamtha Dheemtha was a great song by SJ, also Ponnaram IMO didnt get the attention it deserved. I remember watching this movie - so so so but for IR's music which was outstanding.

Sridevi s mini skirt was kept for I.V.Sasi s "ah Nimisham" -Malayalam...which eventually was remade in tamil as Nool Veli by KB (saritha played Sri s role.....and this time no such cut-outs!)
Intha mathiri mukiyamana vishayngalil Thavaru nernthuvida koodathu !
As someone pointed out the great song s(Ilamai enum poongatru) picturisation was appalling.IV Sasi rasanaye thani!Kalayo by JC and Ponnaram by SPB are great songs too.But "Thottam kanda" with loads of african drum and marimba and stupid dance reached more audience!
AV Ramanan used to sing "Ilamayenum" well in his stage shows.Infact in IR s stage show at Kalai Arangam Trichy AVR sang this song on stage. He faltered at the start but as the song moved on he got his rhythm back.

bb,
1. Where did you get the this SOTD(Idho Idho song) from? Do you have the other songs as well from this album?
2. Also, will it be possible for you to simultaneously add these songs to the dhool collection/database as well as it would be helpful for dhool listeners?

Song of the Day: aattukkutti aattukkutti from maNiyOsai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/aattu.rm
- Sung by L.R.Eswari. MD: VR (?)
- I love this song because of its infectious beat, and the teasing lyrics. There are not that many songs featuring a girl making fun of a grown-up man. The humor is subtle, not insulting, and the simple lyrics adds to the mood of the song.
- Thread on LRE: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/29248.1.html
- "Devan kOyil maNiyOsai" from the same film was featured in SOTD earlier ( a great song sung by Seergazhi).
- Who wrote the lyrics? Kannadasan?

bb- nice song, but I would have been happier if you had chosen the lovely 'Varusham maasam thedhi paarthu' (SJ-MSV)from the same film.
The other bleating sound you hear in the song is by Sadhan- a wonderful mimicry artist, whom MSV utilised fruitfully.
ALS Productions' Maniyosai- was P Madhavan's first directorial venture (he had worked as Sridhar's assistant in some films). Since it was produced by AL Srinivasan (Kannadasn's brother), it is safe to assume that the lyrics are by Kannadasan.
The film starred Kalyankumar (as a hunchback, I think), Muthuraman, Vijayakumari, Nagiah and others.
Memorable songs by V-R.

The song is very melodious - even though the intent is playful, the melody is melancholic.
I am surprised by the fact that it was by V-R.
There is a definite KVM touch in it - the beat
of the pallavi is a KVM Beat and the charanam tabla and charanam melody is definitely a KVM style - hard to believe it was V-R.
There are only two touches that make me believe
it can be V-R - the violin that plays along the lead singer, and the unmistakable 'maanathaiyum kathukittu manushanaAAAga vaazhthukittu' melodic flourish is a MSV mark.
Early V-R had lot of KVM imitations - eg thaazhaiyaam poomuchichu.

I've that song also

Raj- Maniyosai had 2 versions of 'Varusham maasam thedhi paarthu'- the happy, folksy one by SJ with
'Ohohoho hoyyaa' humming by MSV, and a slow sad version by PS.
Another song, which I remember vaguely is 'Katti thanga rajavukku' by LRE and perhaps Jamunarani.

Song of the Day: saarasam vaseegarak kaNgaL from krishna bhakthi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/sarasam.rm
- I was searching for this song for a long time. Finally, I got it. Sung by P.U.Chinnappa in a movie that he starred in. MD is G.Ramanathan. The song has a brilliant start that captivates me.
The prelude lasts for almost a minute.
- Thread on PUC - http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/14052.01.10.49.html
http://newtfmpage.com/forum/5273.14052.01.10.49.html also has his song list.
- The film also has "Radha Sametha Krishna" sung by MLV, and "ellOrum nallavarE" by PUC (among many other songs, I am sure :) ).
- Randor Guy has written in detail about the film Krishna Bhakthi here: http://www.sangeetham.com/mlvtribute.htm
He writes:
With her good looks and singing talents not surprisingly motion picture producers went after her to get her into movies. One of them was the powerful Tamil film producer of his day, SM. Letchumanan Chettiar better known as 'Lena Chettiar' of Krishna Pictures. MLV appeared in a single scene in Lena's Tamil production, a musical movie, " Krishna Bhakthi" (1948).
In this film she sings in a king's court, a popular Saint Thyagaraja Swamigal composition in raga, 'sarasvati manOhari', "Enta vETukoNDu rAghavA….." Slim and sensuously attractive, MLV looks impressive on screen . and her accompanying artistes were all women. The on-screen 'mridangam'- player was Kumari N. Rajam who was an adept in playing on that inimitable percussion instrument. During the song recording the noted mridangam artiste of the day, S. V. S. Narayanan played on the mridangam. Kumari Rajam 'acted' the scene well because she knew to play the instrument!
(Narayanan was the son of the singing stage and screen star of yesteryears, S. V. Subbaiah Bhagavathar of " Jayajaya Gokulabala…" fame. Sadly Narayanan passed away young without his talents flowering to full bloom. He too appeared in a single scene in " Krishna Bhakthi" playing on the mridangam in the famous and brilliant "Kathakalakshepam" sequence by the hero, P.U. Chinnappa.)
(Attractive, slim and talented Kumari Rajam received training in fine arts and could sing and dance well. As 'Baby' Rajam she was a fairly popular musician in the early 1940's. In her youthful years she was a model for the 'Lux Beauty Soap' ads. She played major and also supporting roles in films like " Dhana Amaravathi"(1947)…"Ithu Nijama?"(1948)… "Ezhai Padum Paadu" (1950,one of the classics of Tamil cinema)… "Pavalakodi"(1949) and "Krishna Bhakthi." Sadly her screen career did not take off as expected. Later under the name 'Thanjavur N. Rajalakshmi ' she emerged as a successful classical dance-teacher and choreographer and now she runs a Bharathanatyam Dance School in Madras with disciples not only from India but also Singapore and Malaysia. She teaches Carnatic music too. Now in her early seventies she is still young in sprits and bubbling with life and cheer and is a rich granary of film history and anecdotes of many hues about Tamil movie men and women and musicians of the never-to-return - gone -over-the horizon decades…)
" Krishna Bhakthi" was produced by Lena Chettiar and directed by the successful editor-turned filmmaker, R. S. Mani (the maker of, films like " En Magan", " Kannagi", "Devaki" and "Maman Magal) who also wrote the screen story. It was inspired by the notorious figure of history, Rasputtin the Mad Monk of Czarist Russia and a French novel, " The Monk.". The dialogue was written by noted Tamil writers, S.D.S. Yogi (also a scholar, poet and filmmaker), 'Chandilyan' and Ku. Pa. Sethu Ammal. Lyrics were by Udumalai Narayana Kavi, one of the big names of Tamil cinema of his day. The sadly under-rated S. V. Venkataraman and also the classical musician, Kunnakudi Venkatarama Iyer, composed the pleasing songs. The lead players included P.U. Chinnappa, T. R. Rajakumari, and SP. L. Dhanalakshmi (Rajakumari's aunt), K.R. Ramasami, D. Balasubramaniam, N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Mathuram, and singing actress and also playback-singer, P. A. Periyanayaki. The film was a success and many of its songs became popular.

Song of the Day: mayangugiraaL oru maadhu from paasa malar.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mayangugiral.rm
- MD: MSV - TKR. Lyrics by Kannadasan. Sung by P.Suseela.
- Lyrics in out Pazhaiya Paadal Pakkam: http://www.newtfmpage.com/ppp/mayangugiraal.html
- I like the way the song flows softly, the sitar accompanying Suseela's voice.
- Thread on P.Suseela solos : http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/23522.14753.04:45:24.html
- Kannadasan writes:
"paarvaiyil aayiram kadhai solluvaaL
padiththavaL thaan adhai maRandhuvittaaL
kaadhalai naaNaththil maRandhuvittaaL (wonder why he uses maRandhuvittaaL twice in the same verse)
anbE anbE anbE anbE
aththaan aththaan enRaal uLLam urugaathaa
mayangugiraaL oru madhu
than manathukkum seyalukkum uruvamillaadhu" (what an excellent way to portray her situation!)
- There was a film later, called MayangugiraaL oru maadhu. It had excellent music by Vijayabhaskar.
