Sindhuja:
I am continuing to record the Rudra Veenai. Here
are the details...
A man working in a closed hut with little air flow
loses breath and is hurriedly brought outside in
a state where he is having a hard time breathing.
The rudra veena man plays padharikA and that helps
the sick man to regain a smooth, continuous breath.

Avarohana: s n2 d1 g2 r1 s
(I am not sure if the notations used are same as
the ones mentioned at the top of this thread.)
I hope this helps.

sk,tnx..Since u'r saying u'r not sure of the swarA numbers, can u give some referance for the numbers given by u above in terms of ragAs?i.e something like R1-"the mAyAmALavagowLa Ri" and so on.(of course except Ma,which is way too obvious)
b'coz anda swaram ellAm pAthu onnume puriyilai,as IR has said.

Sindhuja:
I have exactly copied what was written on the screen. When I return home tonight, let me check
the tape for the ragas of earlier week and try
to figure out the notations used.
If we assume the notations mentioned at the top
of this thread, i.e.,
s r1 r2(g1) r3(g2) g3 m1 m2 p d1 d2(n1) d3(n2) n3 s
then the raga is probably a janyam of Bhavapriya.
On the other hand, if we use the
s r1 r2 g1 g2 m1 m2 p d1 d2 n1 n2 s
notation then padharika is probably a janyam of
Kamavardhini.
I don't know which of these notations is standard.

i don't rem this song fully, but as per the Pallavi, 'yamini yamini' from YNRAI is in Kaanada, IMHO.
Ragapravaham Sundar

Thanks Ragapravaham Sundar & Sindhuja..
Can someone throw some light on the HindustAni raga called 'MAlagunji' please?
I believe the following songs are tuned in MAlagunji:
1. NAn ENNum pozhudu (AzhiyAdha kOlangaL- SPB MD: Salil Chaudhry); Salil used his earlier creation in the Hindi hit 'Anand': 'NA jiyA lAgE nA', sung by Lata.
2. VeeNai meettum kaigaLe mAlai sootta vA, mAlai soottum kaigaLe veeNai meetta vA (an SJ gem, MD: IR)
3. Mathappoovu oru pENNA AgAthA, mallippoovu reNdu kaNNA AgAthA (Michael Madana Kama Rajan- Chitra, MD: IR. This rare, beautiful song appeared only in the 1st edition of the cassette)
4. The popular Jhanak Jhanak PAyal bAjE number, 'Nain so nain nahin milao'
5. Looks like 'Ni Sa Ga Ma Pa Ni Sa Re Ga.. Aa re mitwA' from the Hindi film, Swami (Yesudas) is also based on mAlagunji.
Any other songs in TFM? Can somebody provide the ArOhaNa and avarOhaNa for this HindustAni rAga?
Thanks.

thanks satsona :-).
Satsona, i was thinking if you have heard to 'En Kanavinai Kel Nanba' from film "Desiya Geedham" by Ilaiyaraaja. The song's pallavi is "samudrapriya" and charanam is "sumanesa ranjni". There is light touch of Ma1. Try it in your keyboard & let us all know.

I checked the rudra veena previous episodes.
They are following the
s r1 r2 g1 g2 m1 m2 d1 d2 n1 n2 s
notation (different from what is given at the top
of this thread). Going by that, it is clear that
padharika is a janyam of melam 51 Kamavardhini.
I also copied the avarohana of padharika wrongly.
Please ignore the earlier one I gave. The correct
notations (as copied from the episode) are:
Arohana: s r1 g2 m2 p m2 n2 d1 n2 s
Avarohana: s n2 d1 g2 r1 s
I just referred to the book Ragapravaham. This
raga is indeed mentioned in the list of janyams of
Kamavardhini. The name given there is Badrika.

Sindhuja, IR, Ram:
It just occurred to me that there is probably no
raga by the name padharikaa. The rudra veena folks
had written the four Tamil letters, pa dha ri kaa.
It is quite possible that they forgot to put the dot
over the letter dha. With the pa/ba confusion we
(R Sundar and I) just mistook the name of the
raga to be padharikaa. So the raga is actually
Badrika.
The rudra veena folks seem to be making such errors at
crucial places when typing. I also remember that they missed
ri in the avarohana of Hamsanandhi two weeks ago.
Of course, all their claims about the effects
associated with the mentioned ragas is unverified.
Have any of you been able to find more info on this?
Perhaps someone living in Madras can contact them
and try to get references for their claims.

I do not know much about these twisted ragas. In
Badrika, for example, does it mean that if we
want to ascend from ga to the sa of the higher
octave, then the sequence
ga ma pa ma ni dha ni sa
has to be necessarily executed? Is it possible
that it is this up and down movement that gives
some special feel for this raga?

As far as my knowledge goes, yes.
To u'r 2nd question I don't have an answer.
Even I have always wondered how/why rAgAs have an influence on the body/mind/soul.It' really intrguing.
Will try to search something on this.

click on "raagas" on the left side under which u have to look for mAlgunji.
It is ShankarAbharaNam sans Pa in the ascent;and HarikAmbodhi in the descent.

Thanks. Can you name some twisted raga and also
a particular song in that raga in which I can easily
appreciate the importance of the ups and downs
in the swaras?
I also look forward to any info you can find on the
rudra veena claims.

Thanks Sindhuja.
I listened to the Aro-AvarO. In the avarOhaNa, he sings S N2 D2 P M1 G3 M1 G2 R2 S..
Interesting twist to HarikAmbOdhi.
Could you please confirm if the songs
1. NAn ENNum pozhudu (nA jiyA lAgenA)
2. VeeNai meettum kaigaLe
3. Mathappoovu oru pennAgAthA
are mAlagunji? Thanks.
