Actually I really dont know whether SPB sang Gazal or not, but even I feel he should. Uptil now he sang a variety of songs but I never found any gazal. So, he should sing, at least, for ours.

Come on man, a singer of SPB's calibre not singing any ghazel songs, NO WAY, he did sing many, some were tamils songs in the 70's with a ghazel touch, like , ah, can't remember the song, it was Kamal's movie back in the 70'! :((
besides, in Hindi, SPB sang a ghazel album, under Naushad Ali, called 'Mere Payal...' somthing.

I don't think Bollywood rejected him. He was singing for Salman khan for a while. Personally I feel SPB's hindi accent simply sucks!

:) (@ 202.54.137.87), R u punnahai, who use 2 post in forumhub??
any way, yes, Salman appearently wanted just SPB to sing for him during his debut years , in the late 80's till mid 90's, then bollywood bought back their nasal legends with extraordinary singing skills using their nose rather than throats, it was Sanu ji, who introduced such trend, it was then followed Narayan ji Hariharan ji, and the ...rest of the ji's :)
Thank GOD SPB don't sing in Hindi any more!
any way, I don' think, SPB's Hindi sucks as much as Udit, SM, even Hariharan's tamil to certain extent, one must remember than Hari ji & Shanker Ji are pure tamilians !

Raghu,
Don't compare apples with oranges (Tamil singer's Hindi accent with Hindi singer's Tamil accent)
HH’s and SM’s Tamil accent is acceptable and comprehensible whereas UN's Tamil is ridiculous. Once, the great Kannadasan criticized KJY for singing thirukovilae as therukovilae ... KJY himself accepted this and was beware of Tamil pronunciation ... in fact KJY in one of his recent interviews felt bad about current singers killing Tamil but not questioned … whereas he was criticized for a single word those days.
Comparing to KJY’s Hindi, SPB really sucks!
Don’t get impressed that I’m a cynic
Kudos to SPB (Mother tongue Telugu) and KJY (Malayalam) … they have sung so many Tamil songs with great voice and pronunciation! Thank God, SPB and KJY didn’t settle in North India … we would have missed some golden songs!

SPB's Hindi isn't that good. Apparently HFM music directors care more about good pronunciation than Tamil or Telugu MDs. You probably wouldn't hear some singer mangling Hindi lyrics like you would hear Udit Narayan mangling Tamil lyrics, nor do you hear a lot of faux-American-accented Hindi lyrics.

Sonu Nigam's improvisations are copied from SP Bala Sir and that is a fact.......
Copying and immitating is the greatest compliment to a singer
I VOTE that SP Bala should start singing in Hindi again. Come on u gutless hindi composers bring the King back

Ravi,
I hardly found any difference in SPB's Hindi. Its only a sense of superiority that does not allow the northern audience to cleanly accept SPB -they don't want a madrasi singing love duets. Also, what to say of politics in Hindi fIlm world?
Finally, why bother about SPB not being famous in Hindi, it is after all just another regional language.

Why bother about SPB not singing in Hindi?
He has the credibility to sing in many south indian languages with perfection. He also has sung some popular songs in Hindi. Comparing with the attempt north indian singaers (even the great Rafi Sahab) have made in south indian music, SPB has gone far ahead of them. How many north indian singers are sung atleast a good song (forget hits!) in south indian languages?.
Simply because Hindi is the national language, one can't expect that the greatness of a singer lies in singing Hindi songs. North india of course has a wide spectrum of audience, but everyone speaks the same language! (though there are regional diversions, everyone understands Hindi)whereas southindians have to use English/Hindi to communicate with neighboring states. But singing involves passion and expression which is deeply linked with the tradition and culture in one place, and that could only be gained by living there.
The all time greats Dr.KJY and Dr.SPB has sung beautiful Hindi songs apart from South indian songs (North indian audience will accept that, but don't want to put south indians on top in their language!)

I mean, they rejected Kamal, Jesudas etc, as well. Who in Bollywood has TALENT today?

The question posed in the title shoudl be posed to Bollywood and Bollyhood followers? I don't think TFMers can provide a rationale for those people's preferences - tasteless from our perspective. But Bollyhood's acceptance or lack of has no relevance to anyone's greatness. All Bollyhood and its followers are is a group of people with thier set of preferences which are neither inferior or superior to any other groups. The implication that one needs to be aceepted by Bollyhood to be great reflects a sense of insecurity, immaturity, lack of knowledge and ignorance on behalf of the one who posted it.

"Simply because Hindi is the national language"
Now, this is news. According to the constitution there are 15-18 official national languages. Don't be ignorant, this is stated in most social studies text books in high school. So Tamil or Telugu are foreign languages?? Aren't they (or others), national languages of India?? Just because people in Delhi/Bombay etc, speak Hindi makes it a national language??
Dude, stop trying to get recognition from other people. Bollywood or BSwood not recognizing SPB or IR or KJY does not make them unrecognized. We know their value and thats what matters. By not understanding this you are undermining the whole peoples of AP, TN, Kerala and Karnataka who have adored and celebrated SPB and other artists.
This thread is a blatant insult to our cultures and peoples.
Why do people have to go to idiotic lengths to get such useless recognitions?? Try to be yourself and not try sacrifice your natural character or personality to gain acceptance/ recongnition from others. This is no different from Desis or Asians trying to blend into western cultures even when they have no need to. I can tolerate and co-exist with other cultures, but not at the cost of losing mine.

Note man,
I dont agree w/ all this ranting abt Hindi films being the bench mark n all that.. Nor do i think ur considered great only if u work in Bollywood..
But i hafta disagree w/ ya on ur 1st line..
Hindi IS our national language.
The idea works pretty much the same way as we call peacock our national bird, and tiger our national animal.
There ARE other choices around.. the big ppl jus picked one n called it the national whatever!
n i remember my social studies well.. dontcha worry! :)

these are our national symbols.

this is the directives in our constitution on the use of languages. show me where there is the statement which says Hindi is the national language of India.

adada, who said, Hindi is not the national language of India, Hindi is the national language of India, yes there may be 15-a8 dialects in India, but Hindi is the national language.
any way, SPB was not successful in hindi, because
1) He can not sing through his nose to compete with legends like Sanu Ji
2) He can not compete with Sukwinder Ji, cos SPB does not suffer from constipation.
more points later :))

addada Raghu,
I still say and prove that Hindi is NOT the national language of India. It is ONE of the official languages for communication between the centre and the states and is not required or imposed to be used throughout by the populace of India. Please refer to the links I posted above and don't reinforce any false facts. Some more links to prove my theory:

A clear definition for what is a national language and what is an official language.

Why the heck are you guys hell-bent on proving that Tamil is a foreign language??

And, don't try to make fun of other singers just to try and make SPB look great. He is not great because those singers have a different singing style (or according to you inferior singing style). He is great because he has sung many classical songs and other difficult songs with consummate ease. He has given us classics in Hindi like Saagar, Maine Pyar Kiya, and Saajan besides the innumerable classics in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. Its is his versatility and ease that puts him leagues above other contemporary singers.
