I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!
VaniJayaram.com - A site that has lots of info and songs of VJ.

I am not sure whether VJ fans have discussed one of the greatest song sung by VJ. This is in my opinion... "Anbenum sudaraal erindadhu viLakku adhanaal erindadhu innoru viLakku". This is a VJ+VB combo from "KalangaLil avaL vasantham" directed by SP Muthuraman.
Muthuraman + Chandrakala + Srividya acted in that movie. CK replaced Jayachitra who initally signed and later withdrew out of anxiety of a low profile role. Yes in deed, it was wholly Srividya's show.
Coming to this song, the lines "thalai oru madiyil kaaloru madiyil, thirumal arivaar thirumagaL dhaagam" where even if there is slip between "thirumagaL" and "dhaagam", it will be an abswaram. VJ scales very smoothly and repeats the same line. A wonderful situation with wonderful action by "manadhukkuL puzhungum" chandrakala & Srividya and of course wonderful rendering by VJ.
Another great number by VJ in the same film, "MaNamagaley un maNavarai kolam", with nadaswaram accompaniment. Even when she touches the heights, VJ kural konjam kooda keechaadhu!!

Thanks for starting off the "title" project. I hope Saravanan does not might this initiative on his behalf...
My own musings were derivative (no marks for originality):
Sugamana Ragangal
Sangeetha Vaanil...Vani.
Agasa Vani.
Saravanan can choose. Or,at the very least, this will trigger an original of his own.
OISG -
" Saravanan can come out with similar write ups for PS and his pet SJ as well.Don t hijack him for VJ!!This is a warning!!!!!!!!!"
What's this all about??
Subbu -
Kalangalil Aval Vasantham showcased some of the best by VJ-VB in tamizh. The film was a bit of a drip though...and around this time there were scores of such films where sane-sister-coerces-husband-to-marry-insane-sister plotlines were suddenly in vogue. Radha also had a similar situation, as did Saindhadamma Saindhadu and Sivappukal Mookuththi. Call it Mad About Bama Rukmani!
In the 80s KAV was recast (pun intended) as Kanmaniye Pesu. I've always been at a loss to describe the impetus of our film-makers when they march on, without a care, to RE-make a flop...
Such perverse bravery!

paadum vande paarthathunda

Not sure if it has been brought up before. BTW, what is the movie?

Saravanan
After everyone has showered praises on you, here's a little sprinkle of thanks and well done from me. I have always admired at your capabilities both in your knowledge and the art of writing all of it down in lovely English. May God give you the strength and will to go to the 300th and perhaps even to the very latest (last is not appropriate here) movie song of VJ. I tell you, if VJ would be so happy reading all these amazing write-ups of yours.
Also, I thought of a Sanskrit title for your project: Sara"Vani"yam!

Saravanan, I dont think I can write anything which others havent written about you.
I'd made an exe which takes all sub-threads of any thread from this forum as input and concatenates all posts into a single page. It could hold a max of 99 sub threads. I went to http://www.newtfmpage.com/list_all.html and discovered that this thread has got no less than 153 sub-threads!! (The other great thread on KD has 46 so far)
Yen program-ke alva koduthuteenga thalaiva :) Now I have to change it :(

This is a link to a couple of Malayalam duets by Yesudas and Vani Jairam. Two songs out of these "Onnamkunnil" and "Unaru Unaru" are for Salil Chaudhary, from the film "Air Hostess". Salil Chaudhary often re-used his old tunes in different languages and had the capability to impart such a different touch to them each time. For instance, these two songs are the Malayalam "versions" of two old Hindi songs - one of them is the Kishore-Shaila Belle duet "Chhotasa Ghar Hoga Baadalon Ki Chhaon Mein" and the other is the famous song "Halke Halke Chalo Saanware".
Vani Jairam sounds refreshingly sweet in both the duets.

Kaumudi / Prabhu- thanks for your kind words.
Prabhu- though I really didn’t fully understand what you meant by exe, sub-thread etc- I gather you meant that there are a large number of posts in VJ thread. I came into this forum less than a year back, while VJ thread was started in 1999. If you go back you’ll find some brilliant posts by many VJ fans- Naaz, AVR, Kik, Priya, Kaumudi, Susi, Ramki, Balaji, G Ragavan, OISG, Karthi, YVS Mani, Priya, Observer, s0, Balaji, Anuradha, Ragapravgham Sundar, C V (in no particular order)----the list is endless, not forgetting NeelD who was the mainstay of the thread for a long time. (How I wish he comes back again!). So all credit goes to these people, and hope that those who stopped participating due to various reasons come back again to the thread and add lustre to it with their knowledge.
Naaz-Titlelaam irukkattum : ))- tell us more about the interview- when do you want us to start sending the questions?

If there is some genuine interest in the follow-on interview, by all means, the questions can start coming. I don't know when I will be able to set-up the interview, but I can drop VJ a line in the next little while and see what date/time shakes out. I'd have to work with her schedule.
It would be an good to have inspired questions, focusing on specific songs/compositions and maybe even singer/singing technicalities. Questions regarding MDs/Colleagues/Politics should be avoided as much as possible (unless it is contextual.)
If these parameters are not a deterrent, then all I can say is: Begin :-)

Thank you for the questions you sent my way. I appreciate your input (as ever) and will definitely start a list of questions for the interview now.
If I can have about 20 thought-provoking, memory kindling, and musically "inspired" questions, I will go ahead and wrtie VJ and set up a time/date - which may happen in a month or two.
So please add to the list whenever you choose.
This is a request to other participants in this forum / and other VJ afficianados.
The questions can be posted here - and also please mail me a copy at the above address. Many thanks -
and I look forward to your thoughts.

That's perfectly fine with me. As long as I can collate the discussions into "gist" questions, I'd join in and brain-storm too. Let's see who blinks first in these parts :-)

I'll try to bell the cat first. some questions to VJ:
1. When can we expect a full-fledged carnatic concert/album from VJ?
2. As the AsthAna pAdagi for great MDs like MSV, S-G, VB, what does VJ feel about their composing styles. Any interesting incidents?
3. What challenging song(s) does she think have tested her impeccable classical training, especially aspects like her phenomenal breath control, voice range & emoting capabilities.
4. We all know about VJ's swara sudhdham & akshara sudhdham. Does she take extra pains like talking to the lyricist to get the song right without spoiling the beauty of the language?
5. Some comments on the songs that got her the national award.
6. Today's film & devotional music has brought in numerous singers. Even though there are several good singers, the public has also supported singers of less quality. competition doesn't seem to have weeded them out. what does she feel about it?
people, feel free to comment on/alter these questions. these are just from the top of my head. I haven't asked any technical stuff. better to stay silent than to trumpet my ignorance:) Also, I'm hesitant to ask her to sing over the phone. the quality will be really bad.
Naaz, I do hope that you mention this thread and Saravanan's excellent work during the interview. Maybe we can send her a print-out or the website link.

Thank you for making the time to put your thoughts down on paper. I have made a note of your questions. I hope there is some discussion about these questions and we can all - TOGETHER - finalise the best 20.
In my letter last year (sometime in Sept after the interview was uploaded at the website) I had written a thank you note to VJ (where I mentioned the desire of a few rasikas to ask more techinical/specific questions, and she graciously offered to do a follow-on sometime in her reply a few months ago) I had made a specific point of highlighting Saravanan's evocative chronology, and had also given her the details of both TFM page and vanijayaram.com
She'd also said (in the reply) that her nephew - somewhere in the Michigan area - had come across this newtfmpage discussion, and had told her about the enthusiastic, erudite and stimulating exchanges of this thread. Not having a computer, she said she was unable to sample these celebrations of her songs/art on the internet.
My hope is that by the time (and when) the follow-on interview is taped and webcast, she'll have access to a home PC and will be able to see/hear for herself the wonderful buzz around her songs to this day.
Saravanan/Kaumudi: If it is alright with you, would you mind me posting some of your questions here (or you could perhaps choose and do the same yourself) so that there is a sense of what your thoughts are?
Thanks for the questions thru email. Please let me know if I can go ahead...
I look forward to more additions to this "collection" in the next few weeks. Let's keep June 1st 03 as a deadline - for discussions/questions/collation. After that I will send a note to VJ.

I don't have any problem if you post my questions here. Please go ahead. I suppose you can edit the email I sent you suitably. And I really wish that she gets her own PC at home and be able to read Saravanan's articles.
