Watch out for Rahman-Vanessa Mae music
IANS
MUMBAI: When violin sensation Vanessa Mae met Indian composing genius A.R.
Rahman to make
music, the results were electric.
Backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, violin phenomenon Vanessa's first
recording for the
Sony Classical label has a string of tracks by international composers,
including Rahman.
From the tribal dances of Africa to the silken grace of a European minuet, dance
rhythms are
the inspiration for the choreography.
Vanessa holds over 40 international platinum awards and whose worldwide sales
have surpassed
eight million.
"It was really interesting to work because AR has lots of projects on the go,
the process was
very organic," said Vanessa.
"We would meet up, he would show me a patchwork of a few bars that we would then
add on to the
previous few bars and the track would grow". There are some violin flourishes
that AR had
written literally seconds before I entered the recording booth.
"This made the song all the more enjoyable to record as the whole experience
just flowed. AR
adopts the persona of the instrument that he's writing for and writes notes from
the
violinist's point of view."
Other composers on the album include Oscar winner Vangelis ("Chariots of Fire"),
Irish
composer/producer Bill Whelan ("Riverdance") and Tolga Kashif ("The Queen
Symphony").
"It was cool to work with Vanessa because even though she is such a big star,
she is a simple
person and she is open and receptive to musical challenges," said Rahman.
"They wanted me to do the Chinese kind of track too. However, due to time
constraints, I
couldn't do it."
"I first heard about this project when Rob Dicens (Instant Karma) contacted me
through the
recommendation of Sony Classical and asked me if I would be interested. I was
interested
because they wanted a today kind of Indian track."
Vanessa stormed the charts with her unique brand of classical crossover in 1995
when she was
just into her teens.
Her formidable musical talent was revealed on the blockbuster album, "The Violin
Player", which
sold over 3.5 million copies.
Running with the winds of change, Vanessa continued to pioneer the classical
crossover sound
and quickly emerged as the first real superstar in this controversial, crowded
but sensational
field.
The recording was inspired by the rhythms and pulses of dance cultures, ranging
from
Argentinean tango and the seduction of the Bolero, to the tribal dances of
Africa, the complex
and mystical beauty of Indian music and the allure of the belly dance. She has
inspired some of
today's most exciting composers to create new sounds with these traditional
forms.

About ARR's track, a very interesting track. Lots of Indian'ness has gone into it (in tune, the instruments,in the song, etc). As zz says, good to see Vanessa playing Indian classical passages. On the whole a good track. Very Rahmanesque (orchestration-wise) I would say.
The first track in that album (Sabre Dance) is very good too. In the beginning of the first track, I could sense IR's style of strings section (in the background) especially starting from 0:45 till 0:55. Look out how the track gains its momentum. Great!

Her favourite track is by A.R. Raman. You can hear it at the Classical BRITs on 26 May (see the show on ITV the following Sunday, 30 May). 'Despite being Oriental myself, I've never really performed oriental music. Raman brings an authenticity to this music that we'd never have found in a western composer.

Saathiya and Paran:
Sabre Dance is originally by Russian (now Armenian) composer Aram Katchaturian. IR's Vikram track 'En jodi manjakkuruvi' sounds like Katchaturian's compositions though there is no direct known lift, as yet. Probably why Sabre Dance reminds you of IR :-)

My dear Karthik S,
If you go by this policy, where is your msg regarding ARR's Airtel tune sounding so much like Kitaro's compositions? Where are your msgs regarding countless ppl claiming that ARR's music sounds like this & that? Why have you not taken the time to support/counter those?
- From: Karthik S (@ 164.164.82.29)

ambleen:
There was no policy in my msg :-) I was trying to relate IR and Sabre Dance...something which was missed by both Paran and Saathiya. And there is no doubt that ARR's airtel tune sounds like Kitaro's tunes in general and to a large extent like Lieutenant Kijé suite by Prokofiev, at least to me. While the 'sounds-like' part wrt Kitaro is in the genre level, its slightly more direct in case of the latter. But again, I really cannot call it a copy...like I cant call the Vikram track a copy of any Katchaturian tracks that I've heard so far.
Its just that I happened to see the msgs by paran and Saathiya and added my comment. I'd surely like to 'take time' to comment on other ARR's tune similarities as and when the relevant forum/msg pops up :-))

START DIG
Its not just that Karthick has missed the AirTel tune. Infact i was surprised by the omission of Dr.Albans 'O Mata' loop which was used ditto in Muqabla by ARR. Surprise of surprise this reference is yet to appear in the i2fs webpage.
Infact Karthick, what do you think of Pink floyd and Queen's influence on ARR?.

Being balanced in opinion is probably an alian habit for some here...They might not understand that......I have followed your site and was really impressed with your unbiased reporting when just days after Baba's release you came out with that "Ekamaavadhaithyam" lift.

Osho:
I had that Alban loop 'lift' initially but recalled it later since I myself had time and again pointed that I'm not wasting my time in adding use of commercially available loops. It'd be as long a list as Anand Milind's lifts from IR and I dont have both the patience and interest to get into something so pedestrian. I prefer lifts that are more than a coincidence and those that surprise/ shock me. Also high on the agenda are ones that introduce me to some new interesting track/ genre in the form of the original.
Also, 'influence' is a sweeping term. And I'm looking for specifics here.
