These are the great lines of Kaviyarasu Kannadasan in the movie Ratha Thilakam where he acts in the movie singing these lines. ( Song.. Oru Koopayilae yen kudiyiruppu)
What a visionary he was ? Indeed, he is NIRANDARAMAANAVAN.
I share some of my observations about Kavingyar. I want all the fans of HIM to join this discussion and add more quality material in praise of his great works.
This is the only way we pay tributes to this GENIUS.
WILL WE EVER GET BACK A KAVINGYAR LIKE KANNADASAN ??

This is in reference to Ramachandran's observations on "Ullathil nall ullam urangaathu".
The entire song was written in dedication to Kamraj. In 1964 Kamraj came out with a plan to re-engineer the then ruling Congress Party. It was known as K-Plan (Kamraj Plan) whereby seniors holding cabinet posts are to relinquish their respective positions with a view to serve the party machinery well. Kamraj himself took the lead by relinquishing his post as Chief Minister Tamil Nadu. In recognition of this sacrifice the then Prime Minister Jawarhal Nehru offered him the Congress Party's supreme position - that of President. Shortly after that the latter died and Kamraj was saddled with untold Party crisis. It was obvious that the northeners were vying for this all-important post and plots to overthrow him was the order of the day.
It was in this context kaviarasar wrote "Senchottru kadan theerka...." in stark reference to Nehru's offer. Even the words "Thaaiku nee magan illai...." was in reference to Kamraj's personal life as his mother was staying alone in her native and was virtually cut off from him.
On the whole if one were to substitute the word 'Karna' for 'Kamraj' wherever appearing in this song it will be evident that it was written entirely having Kamraj in mind.
Another song, "Ellorum nalam vaazha naan paaduveyn" ('Enga Maama' 1970)was purportedly written having Kamraj in mind.
There are yet many more songs dedicated to Kamraj apart from what was posted by me earlier in this thread. I will try and refresh my memory to post it here.

This is yet another reference to "Avan porukku ponaan..."
There were three similar songs by kaviarasar in the films "Sivagangai Seemai'(1960), 'Mannathi Mannan'1961 ("Pachai kili....")and 'Paasam' 1962 ("Theyrethu silai ethu..."). It was TK Ramamurthy who suggested the combination of these tunes for incorporation into "Avan porukku ponaan" and subsequently tuned the same.
Ah! yes, the pallavi is not repeated. Thanks for the info Ramasamy. This is news to us!
Ever noticed the similarities of the theme for "Sundari kannaal oru seythi" ('Dhalapathi' 1992)and also for a song mouthed by Bhanu Priya in 'Azhagan' '1992'?

I have been told these lines actually refer to LTTE camps. Is that right? The song is " Naadu adhai Naadu" from Naadodi. A beautiful composition in Raag Pahadi.

Hi! Ramachandran,
The song referred by you is from the film 'Nadodi'(1966)where LTTE was unheard of at that period of time.
Incidentally, kaviarasar is held in high esteem by Sri Lanka Jaffna Tamils all over the world. Kambar, Bharathiyar and Bharathidasan are second, third and fourth only after kaviarasar to them, save for those who are Tamil literature educated. So it is not surprising if this song has been construed to LTTE's advantage.

Raj, excepting "Virumbi vaa" and "Rasikkathannae intha azhagu" which are by Vaali, all the songs in 'Nadodi' are by kaviarasar including "Naadu athai naadu".

Hi folks!
Terribly busy these days but I assure all of you that I will update this thread when and whence I am given the slightest time opportunity.
When Paaventher Bharathidasan was asked to comment on Kannadhasan's poetic 'nadai' (style) during the latter's uprising period he sarcastically remarked 'what nadai?', that fellow is still walking on his fours like a baby and you are asking about his 'nadai'. The same Bharathidaasan, during latter years travelled in an auto rickshaw to kaviarasar's house asking him whether it would be possible for the latter to compile his works in book form!
During the early sixties when the present Cauvery river problem started to rear its ugly head there was a call for a ban on Tamil films in Karnataka state headed by a local politician. This politician gathered sizeable supporters to protest in the streets in downtown Banglore where Tamil films where shown.
Bharathidasan wanted to equalise the situation by staging protests in front of cinema halls in Madras with some die-hard fans seeking a ban on Tamil films having Kannada artistes such as MV Rajamma, Pandari Bhai etc. When kaviarasar heard about this he was saddened that such a stalwart had to stoop so low as to take to streets to show displeasure. Kaviarasar was against any form of banning on arts and cinema in the name of politics. He was firm that politics and arts should not be mixed as they are different entities altogether.
Sensing the mood of kaviarasar, his editor took the opportunity to lash out at Bharathidasan over the latter's unbecoming actions in the editorial of 'Thendral'. In the editorial it was written, to wit, "...when Bharathidasaan was a great poet" amongst the context lines. When kaviarasar saw the first copy of the edition he was furious and immediately ordered to stop the press from rolling further. He then came out with a fresh and different editorial and asked them to resume printing. He rebuked the editor for using the words "when Bharathidaasan was a great poet". He reminded that Bharathidasaan is still a great poet and there is no iota of doubt over it.
That is kaviarasar. He was reigning at that time and Bharathidasaan's popularity was sagging. Nevertheless he still acknowledged him as the greatest even to the extent of financial loss over the reprinting of the particular edition of 'Thendral'.

Hi folks!
While kaviarasar was in a hotel in Banglore to complete an assignment for Modern Theatres he took this opportunity to write two songs for his owns film 'Vaanambadi' (1963)viz. "Thookanang kuruvi koodu" and "Gangai karai thottam". It was one early morning when he dictated this song to his Thendral editor who had had no experience in transcribing film songs. Kaviarasar had to go slow in order to let his editor catch up with his tempo.
At the end of the dictation, the director of this film G.R. Nathan (his maiden directorial venture - thanks to kaviarasar's generosity) who just woke up from his sleep sat in awe just listening to the quick flow of words coming out from kaviarasar's mouth.
He was so taken up with the song "Gangai karai thottam" that made him ask kaviarasar, to wit, "When you open your mouth Tamil just flows out like a spring. Just who the hell is actually sitting on your tongue?". Kaviarasar shot back in his usual imitable style "Hey fool, all these while Whom do you think I was talking about?"
The song refers to Lord Krishna whom our kaviarasar reveres him as the Greatest and kaviarasar's quick and witty reply attested it!.

Can any one explain me which took the "Nathiga" Kannadasan to "Atthiga" Kannadasan? Becaus eI have read some lines like
"Sree ranga natharayum thillai natarajarayum
beerangi gundu vaithu thagarppadhu ennalo"
A man who wrote these lines in his earlier days turned write volumes of "Arthamulla indhu madham"
When this happened? what led him to this change ?
Any idea?

Ramachandran,
Basically our kaviarasar was a God-fearing chap deep inside him although outwardly he pretended to behave otherwise lest he gets into bad books of the DMK party.
But while serving the party he discovered the hypocrisy practised by the so-called aethists. The very leaders who used to consult astrologers and things like that put up a different act altgother in public forums to lambast God worship. This was also one major reason for him to disassociate from the party and come up with the line "paathi manathil mirugam irunthu paarthukondathadaa, meethi manathil deivam irunthu paarthukondathadaa." in the song "Satti suttathadaa" ('Aalayamani' 1963).
Kaviarasar had this interesting bit to say about his sudden about turn. He read Kambar Raamayanam just to find fault the fairy-tale story so that he could talk with facts like the other so-called DMK leaders.Instead he ended up falling in love with Kambar himself and the whole of Raamayanam!
Coming from a community which is known for its devotion to spiritualism it was not surprising for kaviarasar to get back in line. But even though his spiritual wilderness was short-lived nevertheless the experiences gained by him made him a better and seasoned person.
In the song "Naalai multhal kudikka mataen" ('Nethi' 1973) the lines "muthal vaazhvu vaazha oru veedu maru vaazhvu vaazha maru veedu - idaikaala vaazhvu pala medu, ethu vantha pothum Avanodu" specifically means to denote the first house as the mother's womb, the other in the next world and the intermediate which is wrought with upheavels but whatever may happen he will be with Him". He recollected this in one of his talks referring to his non-spiritual period. He was also known to visit the Krishna temple in Chennai regularly during his DMK days, not the least worried about the DMK or its supporters.

Ah what a surprise... Vairamuthu has lifted these lines in to his song
"Kadavul paadi, Mirugam paadhi Kalandhu seidha kalavai naan"
HUH!! I thought it was his own child.. Alas!!...
Vairamuthu has done a lot of lifing from Kaviyarasu it seems.
Can we get in to the details of some of the liftings from kaviyarasu by other poets.
Please throw some light in that area.
