Has anyone heard the atrocity that is "MGR 2000"? MGR 2000 is apparently a new release with the "old wine in new bottle" thinking. I felt it was as inappropriate as forcing an Indian Grandma into a skin tight bikini.
I found the travesty in Tamilcinemanews.org site. The banner has ARR's picture? Someone please tell me this is not ARR's doing, if it is, MSV should give him a friendly whipping for this blasphemy. There's a list of great songs from MGR movies. They have set these old songs to music from ARR hits with modern singers singing these old greats. I've never been a huge fan of TMS but I felt for the man when I heard this outrage. I only heard two songs, that's bad enough.
Imagine the magnificent "Thottaal Poomalarum" set to the music of the most rotten song from "Thiruda Thiruda" (I don't know the name of that song it starts out with some clown yelling thakajum thakka thakkajum) and hear the lyrics of "Thottaal Poomalarum" sung by Srinivas and Harini. Srinivas, I really like your voice but matching wits with TMS, come on man! Lorry ulla scooter engine vechcha maathiri, ayyoo. Harini, babe, you ain't P.Suseela, enough said.
The other one I heard, hurt even more. "Pavalak Kodiyilae Muththukkal Pooththaal" set to the music of "Musthafaa Musthafaa" sung by someone named Prabhakar. Prabhakar, please hold on tight to your day job.
It felt like someone spraypainted graffiti over a national monument.

Udhaya: It was not by AR Rahman, it was another AR R*******, I forget the exact name of the guy. It was indeed a shock, as RAMYS(those horrible people) have sanctioned this and are commercialising on ARR's face and name. They have, however put a disclaimer that this is a fun thing and mustn't hurt anyone. They have also very craftily put a question mark after ARR's name!!!!!, but as you heard it on the net, it's impossible to know the real thing there. The songs are not very good, as different people have sung famous old songs, which have been mixed with ARR's numbers. Again, I don't think they had his permission for this, I can envision a law suit coming on - hopefully!

Yes I too heard a song from the album. It was tuned to Telephone manipol but had the lyrics was from an Anbe Vaa song. But I really liked the way the song synced. But using ARR's name for this. Thats too outrageous.

Whoever said A.R. Rahman was getting repetitive should
listen to the score from Deepa Mehta’s 1947 - Earth. The
score, once and for all, settles any lingering debates, and
doubts, on who the best music director in India is. Vibrant,
scintillating and emotionally spot-on are just three
adjectives one could use in describing the score.
The score is a stand-out both, for its melody and for the
growing maturity of a music director who combines art with
craft. One of the pitfalls in scoring music for a period piece
- even if that period is as recent as 1947 - is to get cute
and patronising towards the era. Rahman adriotly avoids
this pitfall with a score that is rooted in traditional classical
music, even as it speaks a more contemporary language.
From the searing theme score,
which alternates between
soaring violin pieces with more
tranquil ek tara passages, to the
endearingly mellow Dheemi
dheemi (Hariharan), 1947 - Earth
presents music in its many
moods and textures. And with
lyricist Javed Akhtar also in fine
form, especially on the evocative
Dheemi dheemi and on the
emotionally dark Raat ki daldal
hai, the music is a treat for both
the connoiseur and the layman
alike.
Besides Rahman, 1947 is also a triumph for Sukhwindara
Singh, who breaks out of the Chaiyya chaiyya stranglehold
with two tracks; Ruth aa gaye re and Raat ki daldal hai.
On the former, he is aptly exuberant, switching to a
high-pitched lament on the latter. And, for once, even
Hariharan has to take a back seat as Sukhwindara sets
the pace.
With Sadhana Sargam also delivering the goods with the
finely nuanced Banno raani, the 1947 - Earth score is
indeed a breath of fresh air. Coming as it does at a time
when film music was getting too pretentious and
predictable, this score provides hope that all is not lost.

Dear Friends,
Any reviews from Screen weekly mag . or Kumudham tamil mag is equal to Garbage/crap/what ever you want to call, be it about IR's music or ARR's music or for scores from the endless Anu Malik to Dilipsen/Sameersen group from hindi, Screen mag especially is highly biased against south Indian music,I guess the kumudham reviewvers have PMS from time to time coming out with some real irritating reviews,
this posting doesn't mean that I hate Arr's or IR's Music , so do not pounce on me, all I wanted to tell is that , don't be biased by these magazine's reviews

Hi everybody
Finally listened to 1947/Earth and here is a detailed review.
Review of 1947/Earth
Total of 9 tracks; 7 with lyrics(vocals), 2 purely instrumental. Released by 'T series'
Song 1. Rut aa gai re, rut chha gai re--Sukhvinder Singh & chorus: The track starts with a percussion introduction followed by Sukhvinder who starts with gusto and carries it thru the song. The 'dholak' seems to lead the percussion a few minutes into the song and continues till the end. The first interlude is brief (nothing worth mentioning). Tuned in Panthuvarali, it does tend to resemble other songs in this raga ('Hai rama' in Rangeela), yet, ARR has succeeded in bringing out another facet of this raga, by using it for a mood of joy & jubilation. The 'female vocal chorus' lends good support to Sukhvinder. One has to mention the excellent use of backing violins in the lines 'Chunri jo teri…..jane de' which literally glides along with the singer. The 'sympathetic strings' have also been used effectively. These can be heard at the end of the line 'rut chha gai re' (towards the latter half of the song) and in the 2nd interlude. For those who are not familiar with the 'sympathetic strings'--they can be heard playing the arohanam/avarohanam; this kind of accompaniment is quite commonly used in Hindustani classical vocal and especially instrumental music-like sitar which has a set of 'sympathetic strings' in addition of the lead strings. Also, the 2nd interlude in contrast with the 1st is quite good use of acoustic violins and flute. Overall this song rates at a 7.5/10
Song 2. Dheemi Dheemi-Hariharan: Hari begins humming along with a wonderful sounding synth piano which provides the only rhythm support for this song! One hardly notices the words 'dheemi dheemi' enunciated by Hariharan (appropriate as dheemi means gently!). The pallavi is refreshingly beautiful! Full marks to ARR for using Hariharan for this rather dreamy romantic melody & hats off to Hari for excellent rendition. The natural sounds (birds chirping) has been mixed well into the song (at the start and end). If you thought the pallavi was refreshing just wait for the charanam. Wow! More surprises as the melody gently flows thru the lyrical passages as a silvery stream on a moonlight night. The song ends with the pallavi being whistled. I do have two minor criticisms. First-- the bubbly synth fantasy instrument which is the main back up instrument is somewhat overused and does sound repetitious. Second--the tune vaguely resembles the ad for Flora (sunflower oil). Notes used are mainly Shankarabharanam notes with M2 being used occasionally. Rating 8/10
Song 3. Yeh jo Zindagi hai---Srinivas, Sujatha Trivedi and Chorus: Starts with a slow percussion/bass combo followed by a melodious pallavi (intro) by Srinivas. The female chorus once again is wonderful; infact they sing the main lyric! (yeh jo zindagi hai..) I must mention two places in the song that are excellent. First-when the chorus sings 'Kab hoga kya, ye kabar kahan he?' and its sister line 'Kahan jayegee,….?' (translates as 'in the journey of life who is to know the destination and what is to happen')-these lines are sung in major notes the first time but repeated with minor notes giving a touch of meloncholy that is impressive. Second the line 'Gumsum..' (Srinivas) and its sister line by Sujatha in the Charanam have touches of raga Desh. Why is this noteworthy? Because remember 1947 (partition, etc..) and how appropriate of ARRs choice to touch on Desh!! Because it has glimpses of Desh, I cannot help noticing the similarity to an old number 'thunbam nErgayil, yaazh eduthu nee, inbam sErka Maataaya?'
One criticism is that the use of the female chorus as it fades in the background (harmonics in Sa and Pa notes) is very similar to Stings' use of background chorus in the song 'Every breath you take'. Recall that the chorus in this song also fades with the similar harmonic in Pa. Lastly, Sujathas' style in the Charanam feels carnatic and slightly out of place. Overall rating 7.5/10
Song 4. Earth theme-instrumental piece: Brilliant!! No other way to describe this composition. It starts out with the reference or drone note (Sa) played on a Santoor. (This has been wrongly called Ektara by the reviewer in Screen magazine). The lead instrument in this sombre melody is the Sarod. Not one pure raga is played but one can hear shades of Charukesi primarily. The wonderful sound of the sarod is followed by a massive string and chorus (male/female) section which adds a lot of weight to the melody. Also, the santoor accompanies the chorus/string section. Towards the latter half of the piece the chorus/string section explores scale changes making the listener slightly uncomfortable. But, this is intentional as ARR is trying to potray the fear of the Unkown by this technique. For the last time the strings and chorus haunt the listener by repeatedly moving from the drone note to R1, gradually fading with time. This piece not only showcases ARRs creativity but also the deep understanding of human nature/emotions and his maturity over the years. One drawback is the poor quality of recording (i.e the recording level is too high when the chorus starts; may be CD would be better recorded but cassettes are notorious for high recording level distortion) Overall rating 9/10
Song 5. Raat ki Daldal-Sukhvinder and chorus: This is my favorite track of this album. Starts out with thumping orchestral drums. Sukhvinder is simply immaculate in skillfully rendering this simple yet powerful melody filled with emotions. The initial drums change to another kind of leathery drum only to go back to the thumping orchestral drums towards the end of the song. The song itself has several noteworthy points. Firstly, the rhythm is set to Mishra Chaapu (7 beat cycle). Second-the minimal use of notes to deliver such a powerful song is mind boggling. The main notes used are Pa, D2, Sa, R2 and occasionaly N3 and may be a hint of M1. Emphasis has been on the higher notes, i.e., the Sa and R2 are of the higher octave (ucchasthaayi). Frankly, I have never heard these notes being able to deliver such dark and deep emotions before. Also the rhythm is vaguely reminiscent of a train (carrying people trying to move during the time of partition). The only drawback if at all is the rather simple charanam, but I guess this is understandable given the minimum amount of notes that ARR is working with for this song. Overall rating 9/10
Song 6. Yeh joh zindagi hai---Srinivas, Sukhvinder and chorus: This is pretty similar to Song 3 except for Sukhvinder replacing Sujatha. This does improve the carnatic sounding portion of Sujatha with a more natural northie sounding Sukhvinder. However the loss of the female lead entirely is a small drawback, even though the female chorus vocals do compensate for this loss. Overall rating 7.5/10 (remains same as some positives cancel out some negatives)
Song 7. Ishwar Allah---Sujatha Mohan & Anuradha Sriram: A song mostly supported by synth instruments with the exception of tanpura, vocals and possibly one other string instrument. Even the percussion sounds synthetic and this is a drawback. The lead melody is once again very very sweet. Composed mainly in Hamir Kalyani with additional use of N2 and D1 in the Charanam. Both the singers together have a done a wonderful job and vocal portions appear full and well rounded. The first interlude is almost entirely omitted by ARR, but the 2nd interlude is very soothing. Being in Hamir Kalyani the opening lines resemble 'Ennuyir Thozhi, KELLoru Sethi..' from Karnan and 'ManathukuL Utkarnthu maNi addithai…' from Kayana Agathigal (the earlier a MSV-TKR melody and the latter is VS Narasimhans'). Again, highpoints in the charanam includes the change to first introduce N2 and then latter on D1 which adds new dimensions to Hamir Kalyani. Overall rating 8.5/10
Song 8. Piano Music---Instrumental: Another serene instrumental piece on the piano, which uses both western and indian classical music notes in a wonderful fusion. There is also an airy base flute in the latter half of the piece which plays along with the main piano melody giving an interesting texture to the sound. Also this does have some minor elements of rag Desh. The mood of this melody is one of peace, serenity and reconciliation. Almost makes me wonder if this would be used at the resolution of the conflicts during partition. Overall rating 7/10
Song 9. Banno Rani---Sadhana Sargam & chorus: A simple melody with minimal instrumentation. However, this is well suited for the scene of a wedding singer at a marriage. Rhythm is a standard synth loop with claps. The first line of the pallavi definetly reminds me of 'Ooru Sanam..' from Mela thiranthathu kathavu (IR-MSV melody). There is a single twist in the melody, ie a change from R2G2 to G3M1 and then a characteristic Rahman bridging piece to get back to the original melody. The second interlude does have an interesting synth clairnet or some reed instrument. Overall rating 6.5/10
Overall album rating: 7.8/10. This album is a definite buy for anyone and everyone (even people who are not interested in music; they may start to appreciate music after they hear to this album). ARR deserves full marks for giving such a wonderful album rich in its melodic content, excellent acoustic and synth sounds, wonderful performance by all vocalists. Once this album proves that ARR has come of age and that his maturity as a music composer has grown by leaps and bounds.
