MS and Srinath: Thanks much for the wonderful replies. Srinath, some of golden oldies of Salil's songs are Malayalam versions of his original Bengali numbers. They are the first 9 songs in this URL. Song 9 is fascinating.

Srinath, your observations will be awaited. Thank you

Modesty thy name is Srinath : even without having any indepth technical knowledge of WCM, you have attempted a fantastic explanation of bass, chords etc.. and you have to a great extent succeeded in your attempt.
I would like to include these songs for bass scores as well :
"Vaan megam " from Punnagai Mannan - I have a friend here who has been playing the guitar for the last 15 years - when I played this song to him just to show him the wonderful buildup of the tune and the tempo it carries with it , the violin festival celebration in the interlude, he was the one who pointed out to me the out-of-the-world bass score - he repeatedly asked me "How did this guy manage this yaar?!"
"Vaaniley then nila" from Kaaki Chattai - listen this is an AIWA walkman with good headphones - even a layman can actually experience the beauty of the bass which just runs riot, especially in the pallavi.
"Rangulalo" , "Prema ledhani", "YEdhuta neevey" all from Abinandana in Telugu (forgive me Ravi, if this mention of Telugu songs is a digression from this thread) have trademark IR novelty written all over them - especially, the song 'Prema ledhani' when the line ends "preminsa raadhani" the bass guitar carries the tune to the second part of the pallavi - "Saatchani neevani nannu nedu chaatani, O priya" and between this last word and " jo haarulo" which immediately follows it, the bass again accentutates the tune beautifully - Srinath, somehow or the other you get hold of this album by IR in Telugu and listen and give you expert opinion on it.

Shankar & Srinath:
I will try to upgrade the "Ponvaanam Panner Thoovudhu Inneram" song to 32 KBPS Stereo mode..or 20.7 KBPS mono mode to capture the bass even more...
Check out for the update posting in my thread on late Monday or early Tuesday....
What about the astounding bass in "Thendral vanthu theendum pothu" (AVATHARAM).......check this one out in my site....Almost all IR songs are so fabulous if you can only concentrate on his bass....
Again...."Megam Kottatum" (ENAKKUL ORUVAN) is a classic example for his skills of providing fantastic bass.....

Raja Fan:
I'll give my response to Salilda's songs later today after I get home.
Madhan:
"Vaan Megham"'s bass is played on the keyboard, I think. Moreover, it seems to be a full octave higher than a regular bass guitar. I liked only certain portions of it, like the last few lines in the Pallavi and Charanam, when the bass dips down to a lower pitch. But yes, overall that is also a very good example of IR's creativity with the bass !

Srinath,
Thanks for the wonderful exposition. I would welcome you to www.swara.com and check out
Oororama Aathupakkam, Rakkamma (Dalapathy) and Devanin Koyil.
Would really appreciate your and others opinion on the technical quality of the recordings. This would be very valuable to me in improving the overall quality of the listening experience.

Ravi:
I have visited your site ! It is wonderful ! But I haven't spent much time there and will certainly visit it often in the future. I think we could even refer your page or Rex's (or MPRs or MS's or ...;-)) to point out songs with good bass scores ! then people can visit the sites and listen and judge for themselves ! Just one thing to note, "Devanin Koil" was very clear (I wanted to compare it with Rex's as I felt his previous recording of the same song had some minor problems) and this is what I found - "Devanin Koil" in your site is slightly slow in tempo. Hope you can correct this problem some time soon ! But the audio quality is too good and so is the song selection ! Thanks !
