Karthik:
Definitely Sindu Bairavi is a better album.May be it needs a calibre of KB to draw out the best.

Isaipriyan, in sindhu bhairavi, IR had a good theme to compose for - a folk musician questions the classical orthodoxy. Because of IR's background, I think, this must have struck a chord in IR's heart and so the masterpieces sprang forth. Not sure, what Partheepan, had in store for IR in ivan..I have not been impressed with the music in his movies. (kAkkai siraginilE spoilt by lyrics).

Ivan IMO is one of the better releases this year.
Sudha sings 3 numbers, all of which are pure classical, with absolutely no light music elements except that the lyrics are penned by TFM regulars. (In contrast to this, Sindhu Bhairavi had most songs with light music touches, either in orchestration or in their format). I guess most of the people including critics such as Suchitra Lata were looking forward to listening to a different Sudha, (a la Nityashree's impressive, popular debut in Jeans). However, I was definitely not disappointed with her numbers. They are great!
My only disappointment was that in the first song, "Enai Enna SeidhAi Veinkuzhaley" towards the end, when Sudha and the violin quartet (of Lalgudi Krishnan, Vijayalakshmi, Embar Kannan, V.V. Ravi) break into some interesting kalpana swaras, Parthiban recites some filmy poetry!! I wish he had added this overlay over the film's sound track rather than spoiling the fun in listening to the complete song in the album!!!
The above song, (set to Simhendra Madhyamam) throws in many surprises towards the end, moving to raga LatAngi and then to HindOLam, MOhanam, Chandrakauns and KalyANi in quick succession.
Her 2nd song "EnakkiNai" is a brief number. I can visualize the scene thus:
Soundarya starts singing this number (she's probably presented as one with a bloated ego.. a la Thiruvilayadal's BAlayyA and Manorama in "Thai MookAmbikai". Note the lyrics: "EnakkiNai YAr ingE Isayil"). Methinks she is interrupted by the sheer presence of our smartass (anti?)hero Parthiban at the audience and makes a mistake (a la Shankarabharanam Rajalakshmi's "SAmaja varagamana"). And stops singing! Now enters the great Subbudu, who thrashes her for turning mAyA mALava gowLa into PantuvarALi (she replaces the swara Ma1 with Ma2!) And of course by the end of the next reel, she has fallen head-over-heels for this rowdy!
The third song by Sudha, "kaNnan Nee En Isai Naadha Oviyam" is a very good, crisp composition with some good lyrics. I think it is 'Shri Ranjani' ragam while MusicMagazine thinks it's 'BAgeshri'. Experts may kindly clarify.
"UlagamE nee Manidhanai MirugamAi" is a dynamic, strong number with some excellent orchestration and interludes. The singer (Sriram) though sings pretty well, lacks the depth of a seasoned artist such as SPB or Yesudas. The chorus singers do an excellent job too. I loved the number. Can't help the feeling that it would have sounded better with SPB in the lead!! Mmm.. if wishes were horses!!!
My personal pick of the album is however not a classical number, but the dark horse: "Appadi PAkkaradu vENAm, kaNNAla ThAkkaRadu vENAm" sung by MAtangi and Unni Krishnan. Wow! What an innovative composition!!!! I have listened to this song a couple of dozen times already and never seem to get tired of it!
It has so much of freshness, and is very soothing to the ears. The rhythm is catchy, yet unobtrusive (not your regular 4 by 4 beat here). It appears to be set in raga Shankarabharanam though shades of KEdAram seep through. I like this song as much as I like IR's 90s classic, 'Thendral Vandhu' (avathAram), though they are entirely different styles.
ThooLu pOdu is a fast paced number with some typical inane filmy lyrics (probably the 1st song in TFM whose main content is "Pickle"!). It also has some Telugu phrases appearing every now and then. Karthink (of Olyile Therivadu-Azhagi fame) and Sujata have done a decent job. It may probably go well in the count-down shows.
The other main song, "Mel top-la 5 star" is strictly OK. Nothing to write home about (the lyricist probably thought it was a great idea to bring in phrases like 'Mel-Top, 'Gate-VAsal' 'Queue-Varisai" etc.. Well, IMO it is an average number.
The rest of the numbers, "Bhajanai Seivom" and "PAttukku pOgAdeenga, Onga-bAttukku POgAtheenga" (Nice word-play) are bit songs, probably situational numbers in the film's soundtrack, which last no longer than 1 minute each.
Overall, I immensely enjoyed listening to this quality album. Go for it!

Neels,
"Kannan en" is Agmark Sriranjani:-).... in "Appadi parkarathellam veNam" the charaNam shoots into Hamsanandhi(may be vasantha)...and some traces of Kalyani is also seen(even in the lyrics kalyani is mentioned....the swarams sung clearly shows Prati Madhyamam...although the Pallavi shows Shankarabanam/kedaram prayogam:-).
I think this is one of the songs we should enjoy as it is without getting into dissection and analysis....what a Prelude and how fast the dimensions change...great song...I would pick this as the best...although all 3 Sudha songs are pretty close contenders....
Guys!!I totally dont agree that these songs are neither carnatic nor light...these songs are definitely hardcore carnatic....Just listen to the Chitta-Swaras in Enakkinai yaar...u'll find the complexities in the tune...I think the tunes are realy complicated....
The difference between a song sung in the Kutcheri and these ones is...in a Kutcheri u start singing a line in a very plain way and u start adding sangathis to it with more Brighas and Gamakams....in these songs(3 Sudha songs) each song starts with a complex sangiti(just listen to Kannan en naaaadha ooooovvium kannnnnnmalarumm vanmeeeee....lots of twists and swirls in the very first line....which is kinda untraditional but not an error)....that mite have baffled the reviewer...but in a film song the artiste can't afford to sing a song for 15 mins....

okay..I take back my statement on kAkkai siraginilE..except for one song the album was fine including lyrics..the exceptional one is gAyathri kEtkum. It looks like I can listen to any song of IR and only thing that bothers me with some of them is the lyrics.
I like 'appadi pakkarathunna vEnaam' in ivan too but the colloquialism just annoys the heck out of me. vEnaam is tolerable (equivalent of wanna/gonna - called 'ease of production' in linguistics)..but pakkaraTHUNNA is too much..(maybe I should just take it in my stride huh :))
Neels ..good review..I am waiting to buy the album. Oflate, I think IR is doing very 'authentic' versions..if it is a blind man singing in kAsi it surely does sound like that and now if it is a classical singer..the song is purely classical (in arrangement and singing)..

talking about kAkkai chiRaginilE: my pick is UrUrA pOgum indha Odambu. it's a great MMG (heavily inspired :-) by E thIruga nannu). very well sung by sandhyA. another song pAdith thirindha enRan thOzhi in simmEndhra madhyamam is another beauty (these two are shruthibEdham of each other, ram... :-) ). gAyathri kETkum is a total surprise, especially the second charaNam where it goes from a cheap LP orchestration to a beautiful string section and flute, never ceases to surprise me. well,...

IMO, kaakkai siRakinilae had good lyrics by R. V. Udayakumar ... better than some of the 'repetitive' vairamuthu stuff !

Review of IVANN from themusicmagazine.com by S SUCHITRA LATA.
http://themusicmagazine.com/ivann.html
It was with great eagerness I picked up a much talked-about album and sat down to listen to it. I had heard about Sudha Raghunathan, a successful diva on the Karnatak classical stage, being keen on getting into films.
Classical vocalist Nithyashree Mahadevan's popularity, everyone knows, had soared after she did a couple of popular numbers (Kannodu kaanbadellaam based on raga Abheri in Jeans and then that long-running title song from the television serial Chitti). Bombay Jayashree hit the bull's eye with her Vaseegara in the film Minnale. Sudha has recently sung a TV serial title song for Dhina. And Ivann, I told myself, was going to be a spectacular crossover for her into movie songs.
Parthiban, hero and director of Ivann, has worked on off beat themes before, and with Ilaiyaraja. In Azhagi , where he had Nandita Das debuting in Tamil, we heard some haunting lines from the maestro.
Sudha sings three numbers. Two of them, Kannane nee (in raga Bageshri, lyrics by Muthulingam) and Enna enna seiday nee (Vali), are both about love of music and love through music.
I wish Sudha had approached her numbers with some patience. Like a nerdy student out to impress the teacher, Sudha reaches breathlessly for stardom. She sings familiar, fast swaras and clever kannakku phrases. There is no space for any expression of the kind one has heard in P Susheela or, more recently, in Bombay Jayashree.
Sudha's guru, the great M L Vasanthakumari, also sang for a few films. Her songs were mostly classical dance numbers.
In classical music, we look for improvisational expertise and grace of expression. In films the lyrics and the characters demand a different set of skills from the singer. But all these factors have been ignored, for Sudha seems to be singing playback for a classical singer. So we don't discover any new facet to Sudha's singing.
The slant of the film is classical music, but there's also an item number to make up for those who are not tuned to this genre. Karthik and Sujata sing Thoolu podu thoolu, where women's lips are described as tasty pickles (words by Na Muthukumar). And then Ulagame... nee manithanai berates the world for transforming men into animals. In their male chauvinist insularity, the poets pickle women's body parts and reserve earth-shaking transformations for the men! The song is by Mu Metha.
He writes:
Ulagame... nee manithanai, miragamai aakuvadenu
Amaithiye... nee irrukkavorideminri alaindu vidalaamo?
Oh world... why do you transform man into an animal?
Oh peace... can it be that you wander with no place to stay? Kapilan writes a number for Karthik and Malgudi Shuba: Mutham enbadu tea kudipaddu pol (A kiss is like drinking tea).
Unnikrishnan and Mathangi sing Pazhanibharati's Apdi paakrdunna venam, which begins promisingly with Ilaiyaraja's trademark harmonies and then dwindles into vagueness.
Ilaiyaraja has written two songs Bhajane seyvom and Pattukku pogadingo. Bad news for his fans: he disappoints severely. Not a single line or snatch of melody stays or haunts. The old touch does not surface except in very distracted, lost patches in some interludes and intros. Sad let-down from a genius.

Lastly my request again! I cant wait to hear that album. I cannot purchase the tape because there are no Tamil music shops in the city I live.
Is there a site hosting the songs? There was one hosting only 1 minute clips...which can be actually frustrating, if you have liked the song :-)
