tamil lyrics vs hindi lyrics

Does " chanda rey chanda rey" (sapnay) match up to the visual beauty that "vennilavey vennilavey" (minsara kanavu) evokes? For that matter are hindi lyrics of tamil dubbed movies of the same calibre as the original? Or are they better?
Anyway, how ARE they written? Does the director brief both the lyricists on the situation and let them come up with their own lyrics or does one of them write and the other transcreates ? Speculate here....

  Before you go delete this thread, there is something I would like to ask some TFM and HFM listeners. I don't speak more than a few bad words in Hindi, so please enlighten me. Hasn't Anand Bakshi been writing Hindi lyrics for decades? How does he compare with TFM poets? Don't they use classic Urdu in HFM?

  It is so annoying that one of my postings which compares (in that stanza lines) Hindhi lyrics with Tamil Lyrics has been deleted. Are you so much against Hindhi music?!. We are only trying to compare two dominating languages in Indian Music. Would you delete if somebody compares Tamil music with Western POP or any other type in English? What is wrong if I compare the beauty of the music in two different languages . You are threatening the DFs that you will delete this thread if anyone talks only about Hindhi music , but the thread only talks about the comparison of the two. If there are restrictions like that , It is not good for the page as people would like to know how Tamil stands against other languages. This means that a betrayal of Tamil music lovers who would like to see how music is done in other languages. If your opinion does not change, I WILL REMAIN SILENT AND INACTIVE in future!

  Ramesh, I don't think any territoriality is meant by Ravi. He is worried about the scope of the DF being blown wide open. After all the page is called TFM page and allowing one such digression will mean he would have to allow discussion of Bengali, Assamese, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Gujrathi, Ghazal, Hindustani, and other Indian folk music which will get way out of context, not to mention overburden the server. So please consider his job as the watchdog for this page, his is not a very enviable or popular position.

Speaking of (out of) scope, I mentioned that my posting was very much comparing the lyrics and never ever discussed " HFM in general''.   Boy, everybody is hot and bothered today. That was a volunteered explanation, Ramesh. I was trying to see things from both sides as a third party, I don't even work with the TFM guys. If I wanted to advice people I will run a summer camp. But if you choose to see it that way, then bye bye indeed.

  i cannaot digest Tamil( my belowed mother tongue) being compared to that Hindi.

  but one thing is for sure, Tamil lyrics are surely going down on their standards as they convey less meaning, than the Hindhi lyrics, which I should unfortunately accept, though I am a die hard Tamil fanatic.
  It should be us who should oppose the errosion of values from Tamil lyrics.

  Mama (Amma's thambee that is), can you explain how Hindi lyrics stack up against Tamil lyrics? I don't mean for this to become who's better whose worse! I mean, do Hindi poets write about the same things that TFM poets write about? The perspective on male-female relationship, are they conservative or liberal, sexist or egalitarian, etc?   PPl ! I tink we're missing the point ! All I wanted to know was how are the hindi lyrics written when the original is in tamil.
  Does the director brief both lyricists on the subject? Or does the hindi writer transcreate from the original tami?
  This shouldnt turn into a tamil vs hindi ladaai.

  Amma, there's no reason for your alarm. I'm sincerely curious in a non-judgemental way. I don't know any one who listens to TFM and HFM, this is a great place to find out stuff like that. I'm just expanding on what you started, not getting away from the point,if that's okay.

  IMHO, one of the reasons for people getting uptight and combative in this thread is the title itself.
  "Tamil Lyrics vs Hindi Lyrics" gives the impression that the discussion is about why one is "better" than the other. I do not think that was the intention of Amma or Udhaya.

  Let me digress to the main point of this thread ;)
  
  Most of the songs that are dubbed into Hindi from Tamil are being written by P. K. Mishra and Mehboob these days. In fact, I think the trend started with "Roja", and continued to "Bombay", "Chhaila" (Rasaiya), etc. My personal opinion is that the lyrics of the dubbed songs are somewhat inferior compared to those of the original Hindi songs (I know I'm comparing two bad pieces of work !). For instance, the "RukkumaNi" song had atrocious words in them. To be fair to the writers of dubbed songs, it must be said that they need to put in words that not only match the beat, but also match as well as possible the lip-synch of the artistes. Thus, we get "Tu hi rE" for "UyirE",
  "Main hoon paramashivam" for "KumbittA paramasivam", and stuff like that. Can't be helped, is what I would say.
  But songs in "Sapnay" (MinsAra kanavu), and "SazA-E-kAlApAni" (SiRai chAlai) were written by the veteran Javed Akhtar, and the words were'nt literal translations (or lip-synchs) of their Tamil counterparts. And so, the quality of the lyrics were significantly better (even good, in fact). So, it all boils down to this : either concentrate on the rhyme and lose out on the content, or the other way round.

  Finally! thank you very much Vishwa for bringing us back to the point.
  I guess one of the reasons why the hindi lyrics In Sapnay and 'Sazaa-e-kaalapani' were good was because the films themselves were shot as multi-lingual movies. Whereas in other cases, as was with 'kaadalan', the dubbing happened after the movie succeeded in its original version.
  of course, it's a different matter that there's no major lyrical quality of speak of in songs like 'mukkala muquabla'

  Hi,
  It is a fact that Javed Akhtar is the best film lyricist today, putting together both Tamil and Hindi film worlds. That's b'coz he hardly compromises on the content of the lyrics. A case in point is his walking out on that inspired MD Anu Malik. That's the reason why u dont see much of English in his songs. That's why the songs in Sapnay are having better lyrics than Minsara Kanavu.
