I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Naaz-
Praise from a cineaste like you is high praise indeed. I am touched. Thank you! I am sure I cannot continue without your invaluable support.
Reg. your query, I think the song you are referring to is the SPB solo from 'Aadu Puli Aattam'- It goes like-
Uravo pudhumai, ninaivo inimai
kanindhathu illamai, kaadhalin perumai--
(Kamal on a bicycle, with Sangeetha sitting behind him).

Naaz & AVR: I do have your emails - I have been swamped with work and have not been checking email for awhile now. Just tfm threads occasionally. I will get back to you tomorrow.
I just raised the question of pallaandu vaazhga on the KVM thread - wondering if the choice of VJ was driven by MGR vs. KVM. It will be interesting to discover this as Manisegaran continues his series in that thread.
There was a discussion of her pronunciation sometime back - I was listening to maalaiyittaan oru mannan yesterday and realized that she's the first person I've heard correctly pronouncing 'ge'tti mELangaL as opposed to 'ke'tti mELam.
Talking of Sivaji - I had the misfortune of watching tirumaalin thirumaarbil sridevi mugamE and kaalam maaRalaam nam kaathal maaRumaa. Apart from the physical features one expects of a hero, the notion of someone old enough to be the heroine's father playing the romantic lead is revolting. OTOH, kikki kikki kiLiyakkOi (w/ MVD) shows a remarkably slimmed down KRV (dharma raaja - anyone know when this movie was released?)
In case anyone's wondering at this list of VJ's songs I'm watching - they are in a new DVD titled Golden hits of Vani Jairam (Pyramid - has 30 odd songs for ~US$18; pure extortion when you consider you get 100 hindi songs for the same amount). The most hilarious song has to be mazhaikkaala mEgam (vaazhvE maayam - kamal, sri devi). The song switches back and forth between a airplane and kamal and sri devi hanging from a parachute - which is fine except the hanging from the parachute is filmed in a studio. Not one hair on sri devi's pretty little head stirs though she's descending through the sky. And both of them are lined up in the same shot perfectly!
Some VJ songs we have not uncovered in this thread - and I want confirmation that these are VJ songs: O kaathal ennai kathalikkavillai (kodi paRakkuthu), ithu rOsaappoovu (oru kaithiyin dairy), paruvam kadanthu (yaarO ezhuthiya kavithai). 3 or 4 non-VJ songs are also included which makes me doubt these.
The most remarkable thing about the DVD is that they've managed to unearth a picture of VJ with a smile on her face (all right, it's the barest hint, but I'm calling it a smile:-) for the cover. I've only seen her looking sober.

Kik, 'Kik'iki 'Kik'ki kiliakkoi is a SPB-VJ duet. Dharmaraja came in 1980. Perhaps the only non-Devar film to be directed by MA Thirumugham. Dharma Raja came in 1980.
There are 2 versions of Kaadhal ennai kaadhalikkavillai- even the lyrics differ- one is by SPB-VJ and the other by SPB-KSC. The other 2 songs you have mentioned are assuredly by VJ.

1) Vaa vaa pakkam vaa (Thaga magan)
2) Ore Jeevan ondre ullam (Neeya)
3) Idhu iravaa pagala (?)

Saravanan,
Apart from "Marghazi pookalae" song VJ has sung one another song with T. L. Maharajan. It is in Naan Potta Saval. (Rajini movie). forgot the starting lines though.

VJ also had a good song in Paruva Raagam (MD: Hamsalekha.) didn't she? I believe this song also had an original kannada version.
Saravanan -
Thanks for the confirmation about Aadu Puli Aattam. Yes, that was indeed the song (sorry about the words being all over the place in my memory) and now I can remember the sangeetha / kamal bike trip. Somehow I thought it was a duet (I believe, it was a duet in Kannada.) - but still it is a lingering song.
I do look forward to your forthcoming "spot light(s)" on VJs film music career. It is the best walk down memory lane I've had in a long, long time...thanks to you.

Kik -
I don't know why, but I have always found "idhu rosapoovu" from Oru Kaidhiyin...to be a good song. Too bad it was picturised on Anuradha. (Did this song feature in the film?) or am I quoting some tidbit from a film-rag...? However, I do like that song very much. As much as I like "Manjal Vanna Roja" from Ennadi Meenaatchi (SG) - which had traces of "Dhanno Ki Aakhon Mein Pyar Ka Guma..." (from Gulzar's Kitaab.) A good "tamizhaakkam" by the inimitable (and unabashedly imitative!) Shankar Ganesh!
Write when you can. No worries.

Idhu Rosapoovu was featured in the movie. I remember seeing it. Gangai Amaran also sings or hums that song in between I think...Am not sure

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought I remembered it being in the film...and yes, the Gangai Amaran tip from you brings it all back! I think it was MVD (or Janakaraj) in that number with Anuradha?

I believe GA keeps repeating "AH..H.." after VJ sings "Pandi virucchaachhu" and "mudichhhu avicchhacchu and "mudivu ennaccchhu". (Sagikaadhu....)

The song is a fast number. I do not know if the song is sung by GA or IR. The song is a club dance song where Kamal (cop) visits for a rendovous. If I am right he even dances with Anuradha.

Four new solos added to Tamil Solos Page5, in sync with Saravanan's chronology. Happy listening!

It is indeed Gangai Amaran who hums and Kamal who dances while (apparently) incognito tracing a suitcase exchange
between two villains.
Saravanan: ka and ha point out paNNathukku 'kik'i 'kik'i reply kodukkaReengaLaakkum:-)
YSKB: VJ
has done a competent job with what she's been given - the sad thing is she's not been given much:-( Agree that the two you
labeled popular were most likely meant to get air time (on radio?) The rest are mediocre - I know Naaz that you will defend
them, but I've listened to them thrice and my attention keeps wandering every time. None of them is in the class of
mazhaikkaalam varuginRathu which is a much better representation of the impact of saawan compared to the songs in this
album. I have postponed listening to the Birju Maharaj and Geeta Govindam to listen to more tamil songs.

saravanan,naaz ,Neel D et al,
Because none of you could come to my aid after lot of head scratching &namacchal I have come up with the L Vaithyanathan / C V rajendran/ Poonthen Chinna chinna kaal eduthtu vaa movie. I think - i am still not sure- it is Samarpanam. It had jayachitra & possibly Muthuraman in it. It should have been released in 1976-78. After IR's arrival that much is certain. Does it ring a bell for somebody.

I found the 'Paadha Poojai' duet, which Cinema Virumbi had mentioned. It is there in kumudam.com's music page- TMS Duets.
Please listen to it. Here is a different VJ altogether!
Neel, it will be great if you can add this song to your site.

Continuing 1975—
28. Maanikka maamamani maalayil- Thennangeetru- SPB- GKV
Again, can anyone help with the star cast? Did Vijayakumar act in it?
Another good song in it is the KJY solo- “Aandavan potta pulliyai maatra’
This song ( Duets 2 in Neel’s site) has SPB starting and singing the first saranam too, all by himself. It begins like this:
Manikka maamani maalayil
Mangai aval thanga mugham naan kandathu
VJ makes her appearance only after the 2nd interlude. Her opening lines are –Poo mughathi oru kodi deepam kanden.
In the third saranam, listen to VJ’s humming along SPB’s lines: Naan varuven dhinam mundhi sandhi neram.
29. Sugham Aayiram en ninaiviley- Mayangugiraal Oru Maadhu- VB
A landmark film for Vijayabhaskar. All his 4 compositions for this film were super hits. SPB’s ‘Samsaaram enbathu veenai’ and KJY’s ‘ Vara vendum vaazhkkayil vasantham’ remain to this day as foremost among their evergreen hits.
The film had Muthuraman, Sujatha, Vijaykumar, Fadafat Jayalakshmi and Thengai Srinivasan. It was remade in Hindi many years later as ‘Bezubaan’ stg- Shashi Kapoor, Reena Roy, Raj Kiran and Naseeruddin Shah.
The film was made memorable by two factors- One was VB’s music, the other was Sujatha’s magnificent performance. Kannadasan is said to have highly commended Sujatha after watching this film.
This song (solos page 3 in Neel’s site) is a celebration of youth and the feelings which youth awakens in her. She wonders about the changes in her body and her longings for the touch of a man-
Sugham aayiram en ninaiviley
Ilamayin kanavu malarum valarum uraviley—
Panimalar meniyile pudhumaigal thondruthamma
Paarvaigal serumpothu paruvam angey vaaduthamma
Kaviyam paada nayagan engey—
Ilamayin kanavu—
Hark at the humming between the lines’paarvaigal serumpothu—‘ and ‘kaviyam paada’’. Again, listen to way she lowers her voice when she says ‘Ragasiam’ in the line-‘ Thanimayil inimai illai ragasiyam purindhu konden’- Enchanting!
VJ sings the first line of the pallavi- Sugham aayiram en ninaiviley, around 6 times in the course of the song- and each time she manages to sing it differently! Chorus voices in the interlude add to the song’s appeal. (the first and third interludes being similar).
30. Oru puram vedan- Mayangugiraal oru maadhu- VB
“Oh, what tangled webs we’ll have to weave, if we choose to deceive”!
Here we’ll have to recall more of the story to be able to have a better appreciation of this lovely song. (Solos page 4). As we have already seen earlier, Sujatha is bursting with youthful yearnings. She falls for handsome Vijaykumar and allows herself to be seduced by him. Later he vanishes, and to her dismay, she finds herself pregnant. She goes to Dr. M N Rajam for an abortion. Then, later when she gets married to Muthraman, she is horrified to find that he is MNR’s brother. However, all is well, as apparently the good doctor has not revealed anything to Muthu. But her peace is short lived. Vijaykumar enters her life again as Muthu’s chauffeur. And to make matters worse, her friend Fatafat marries Thengai, a photographer, who has clicked Sujatha and Vijaykumar together. He starts blackmailing her.
Whom can she turn to? Is there to be no deliverance from her wretched state?
This is the situation. And what a wonderful song the joint effort of Kanndasan, VB and Vani has produced! Verily has Kannadasan captured her plight in evocative lines!
Oru puram vedan
Marupuram naagam
Irandukkum naduve
azhagiya kalaimaan
Ragasiya idhayam
Pala vagai thuyaram
Avan arul kidaithaal
thuyarangal vilagum
VJ is not merely a playback singer here- she is the playback actress. Hearing her fervent plea as she implores’ Kanna unadhu karunayai kaattu, kaarigai vaazhvinil nimmadhi oottu’ , one would almost believe it is VJ herself who is afflicted. Again listen to her despair as she laments ‘Yaar arivaaro oomayin kanavu’?
A remarkable hit for VJ!
31. Pattu poochigal- Maalai Soodavaa- SPB- VB
The film starred Kamal and ‘Kannada’ Manjula. I have seen it on TV long back, but don’t remember anything of the story, except the college ragging scenes. Perhaps a run of the mill love story. Of course, KJY’s ‘Yaarukku yaar sondham’ was very popular those days.
This song (Duets 2 page 3) has a lot of chorus voices along with SPB and VJ.
Pattu poochigal vattam adithaal
katti anaikkum poochendu
Kattu kaaval meeri nadakkum
kaadhal vaazhiya pallandu
Maalai pozhithil leelai nadathum
vaalai paruvam thaan
Yengigindra yekkamellaam
Then kudikka thaan—
Almost sounds like a ‘parade’ song, if you know what I mean!
32. Aasai oru manimuththam- Maalai Soodavaa- SPB-VB
Another duet from the same film.
SPB: Aasai oru mani muththam padhithida aasai
VJ: Osai, malar udhattinil pirandhidum osai
SPB: Oru dharam ammamma oru dharam
VJ: Avasaram, appappa avasaram
SPB and VJ seem to have had lots of fun singing this song. Watch SPB beg ‘Oru dharam, please, orey dharam’ and VJ chiding him ‘Avasaram, appa, avasaram’ – especially her apparent disgust when she says ‘appa’ in that line is a treat to listen!
However SPB’s quoting law sections in his inimitable English(!) in the interludes mar the beauty of the song:
‘According to section 379, whoever commits theft shall be punished with imprisonment, which may extend to 3 years or with fine or with both’
‘According to section 376, whoever commits rape, shall be punished with imprisonment, which may extend to 10 years or with fine or both’
What punishment can we think of for the person whose brainwave resulted in these insertions?
Vijaya bhaskar did 4 more films in 1975. Surprisingly VJ seems to have been excluded from them! I’ll list the films- can any one can confirm that VJ indeed didn’t have any song in any of them?
1.Uravu Solla Oruvan- I think I’m certain that VJ didn’t sing in this. The only song to have a female voice was ‘Pani malar neeril’ and it was by PS. The other songs being ‘ Mohan punnagai’-KJY, ‘Nadandha kathayai’-KJY and ‘Kelu papa’-SPB.
2.Unga Veetu Kalyanam- I can recall ‘Kannazhagil neeyum oru’-TMS-SJ, ‘Iyer aathu ponnu sonna’- Kovai Soundararajan-LR Anjali, ‘Pesaamal vaa en pakkam’-TMS-LRE. Any VJ songs?
3.Yaarukku Mapillai yaaro- I can recall only one song-the lovely ‘Muththukkal sindhi thiththikkum mozhiyil’-SPB-PS
4.Thottathellaam Ponnaagum- 3 great duets and all by SPB-PS:
Panimalai meghangal pozhigindra kulirinil--,
Aavani malare Ippasi mazhaye, and
Ninaithathai mudippathu
I really cannot accept that VB, in a single year, made 4 films without his favourite VJ.
Help!
More to come in 1975--
