I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I was not seeing it 'til Saravanan gave me the details of the scene...and the Manjula mugam came running to the fore!
You are right, Sivaselvam. So many good songs have been ruined by unimaginative picturisation, and eye-sore costumes and unsightly actors....Don't get me started :-)!

VS Narasimhan offered VJ some breezy, and casual numbers. Karisal Tharisu in Achchamillai Achchamillai (Neel, good solo!!), Idhu Ilamai Yezhudhum Kadhai (Let a 1000 Flowers Bloom) and Kanne Kalar Kalara Theriyudhu (Pudhiyavan)...I think this was somewhat deliberate on his part - giving VJ songs that went against her "serious" image (particularly when you think KB films Nool Veli, Nizhal N, AR, Maro Charithra etc.) - and it looked like VJ had fun singing those songs!

This is the second time someone is frightening this chinnapaiyan with terrifying images of Sivaji's pot bellied "performances" !! Don't you guys have heart? Isn't this forum PG-rated???

Malligai mullai, Manamagale, Nadhamen Koyilile, Malligai en mannan, etc. were songs that played in every wedding (and other functions too) during mid and late 70s. It did not matter if it was Karpagam's wedding ot Shanthi Mary's wedding or Yasmin's wedding, there was no wedding without Vani Jayaram in the town I lived in at that time. You did not need mELakkArargaL. Just by playing these songs kaLai kattividum. (And someone somewhere said that VJ's voice had no decorative quality).
I have uploaded some rare combinations. Click on MoreTamil Page2.

Neel D -
People who say that Vani Jairam's voice has no decorative appeal or no expressive quality, are either tone deaf or are your basic vayitherichchal girakis. But I am sure you know that by now.
Some people can't bring themselves to recognise a singer who exceeds all expectations. But frankly, who gives a toss about such people?
I remember that they even played "Chandira Pirai Parthaen Thozhi Sandhippu Nigazhndhadhadi" (Kizhakkum Maerkkum Sandhikindrana) even at tamizh, chettiar/nadar weddings (even though the song mentions "nikkah" specifically.)
Another one that was quite popular in chathrams and mandapams was "Masi Masa Kadaisiyile Machchan Vandharu...Parisam Pottaru!" (Pallandu Vazhga.)
The duet by VJ-MVD "Pattule Sela Kazhuthule Rathina Malae" (Pannaipuraththu Paandavargal) also made its rounds when the film was released. Ditto for "Thayaki Vechcha En Thangame" (Rowdy Rakkamma)
It is interesting how many mazhai and malligai songs VJ has in her repetoire.
Thanks for refreshing all the Kalyana Kutcheri memories. What you say is so true. Kalaivaniyin Paatai Pottaal Kalai - yeckachecka kalai - kattidathan seiyum!

Guys,
I am seeing this thread again after a long time. In my observation, MSV - VJ combination is brilliant.
Let's not forget songs like
1. Naan Paadi Konde -- Sirai
2. Vazhthal Unnidu - Savithri
3. Mazhai Kalamum - Savithri ( what a wonderful song, with Jaya chandran)
4. Pongum Kadalosai - Meenava Nanbam
and the list is very huge...
Malligai Mullai , according to me, is one of the masterpieces of MSV.
Let's add more

1975 revisited:
21. En ullam azhagaana- Cinema Paithiyam- SG
Here VJ sings the tamizh equivalent of her own 'Bole re papihara'. Jayachitra was the tamizh Guddi and a crazy fan of 'Makkal Kalaignar' Jaishankar. Also starred Kamal, Sowcar Janaki and Major. Sivaji, JJ and a lot of other actors made special appearances. The late leader Kamaraj is said to have seen the film and commended it highly for the message it sought to convey.
Hmm- sad to say incorrigible film buffs like us wouldn't learn from it!!!
Among the first great hits in the SG-VJ combination. She would always remain their favourite singer.
En Ullam azhagaana vellithirai
athil un vannamey pon oviyam
nizhalaadum padam endrum nee allavaa--
Kamal thinks she is singing, thinking about him. However Jayachitra is living in a fantasy, where Jaishankar is the hero, and she herself is the heroine.
'Nee Kathainayagan, Mangai kathainayagi', she asserts strongly.
I love the way VJ dives low in one line and soars so high in the next--What an artist!
22. Paraseega kavignanukkum- Anbu Roja- SG
Can anyone help with the starcast? All I know about it is that it had two other great songs: 'Enada Kanna'-AMR-PS and 'Paal nilavu neram'-SPB-PS.
This song is essentially for a 'Kottevaali' and would have been more at home in 'Umrao Jaan'. However VJ carries it off, and does it well too.
'Paraseega kavignanukkum pattezhuthi thandhaval naan
Baghdad nagarathile bavaniyaai vandhaval naan
Arabia desathaye adimai kondu nindraval naan
aayiram baadshaivai azhagaale vendraval naan'
(Obviously this courtesan belonged to Baghdad of pre-Saddam days!)
Then a lovely alaap follows, which is applauded by an intoxicated male voice with 'Waare wah'!
Then follows:
Aadaab arz mera salaam
salaam hai
Ennodu aadalaam
ellorum paadalaam
Incredible lines like 'Golconda Sultan en kaal kandaan, kaal kandu en meedhu maal kondaan' follow!
Good use of instruments like harmonium, sarangi etc.
23. Mazhaikaala megam- Kasthuri Vijayam- V Kumar
(Solos page 4 in Neel's site). A film which KRV solely carried on her ample(!) shoulders. She enters a household and goes about setting right the numerous wrongs therein.
Another good song from the film is the PS solo-'Pallaandu pallaandu pallayiram aandu'
Mazhaikkala megam maharajan vaazhga
Vatraatha deepam sindhum oli pola vaazhga--
VJ wages a veritable 'Kurukshetram' in this song- seeking analogies from various characters of the Mahabharatha:
Sariyaana neram sollum Bagavaanin Geethai
than koondhal soodi kondaal Panchali kothai
Kanna un dharmam ingey, pagaivorum ingey
pangali unnai kandaal pagaiyaali engey--
Aadum pagadai kaayai uruttum Sakuni maamane
allum pagalum unnai ethirkkum naane Paarthane
Gaandeebam ingey undu, kalam ondru undu
Kanna un leelai engey vaithaayo indru--
A song which was played often on Ilangai Vaanoli in the late 70s- I remember so many hot, lazy afternoons- this song seems to belong there--
24. Sorgathin thirappu vizha- Pallandu Vaazhga-KJY-KVM
MGR-K Shankar's gruesome remake of Shantharam's epoch-making 'Do Aankhen Baarah haath'. Till this day DABH remains a milestone in Indian film-making. How utterly revolting is our version!
And compare the superbly talented Sandhya's scintillating performance with our lewd Latha's titillating exhibition- and we can see the abysmal depths to which the tamizh version had sunk--
KVM's music was the saving grace. Though he gave a song each to TK Kala (Poi vaa nadh alaiye) and PS ( Enna sugham), he reserved the best for VJ. This was perhaps the first film in which VJ worked with 'Mama' and what magic they would together create in the future with Shankarabaranam, Swathi Kiranam, Sruthilayalu--
This song (Duets 3 page 2 in Neel's site) is a mellifluous melody, perhaps the first duet by KJY and VJ.
VJ starts off as though in a whisper: Sorgathin thirappu vizha
pudhu cholaikku vasantha vizha
pakkathil paruva nila, ilamai tharum iniya pala
paarkkattum inba ula--
Particularly pleasing is way in which VJ plays with the last syllable in the words'Asaindhum' and 'thavazhndhum' in the repetion of the line 'Megham asaindhum thavazhndhum vilayaadum vaanathiley'
The haunting humming in the interlude and KJY and VJ's repetition after each other (at the end of each saranam) of the words 'Pudhu mozhigal' and 'Kathai ithuvo' make you sigh with rapture! This is the stuff dreams are made of!
25. Maasi Maasa kadasiyile- Pallandu Vaazhga- KVM
This is when the prisoners are at work and Latha comes along, playing her 'kottankuchi fiddle' and selling her wares. The noise of the wheeled contraption she pulls behind her is heard throught the song.
Kicks off with VJ's jolly humming.
Masi maasa kadasiyile machchaan vandhaaru
panguni masam paakku vechchu parisam pottaaru--
Hark at her 'Ammamooo' in the middle. Also, listen to the small laughter she gives between 'Aasayile thudichaaru' and 'Arthathodu sirichaaru'- I swear each time you hear that laughter, you get pudhu pudhu arthangal!
Again listen to the bashful way she confesses 'Onnu mattumaa koduthen, en ullathaye thaan koduthen'- Captivating!
- That she could sing even such a jolly folksy song, with perfect ease and with mesmerising grace, must have come as a pleasant surprise to many!
26. Chella papa- Pallandu Vaazhga- KVM
This is when Latha plays with the kids.
VJ begins thus: Chella papa,
unnai ondru ketpen sollu papa,
nee pirandha naatai annayaai ninaithu madhithu
nalla peyar eduppaya?
- to which the kids reply 'Oh, eduppen'
and VJ lauds them with 'Appadi sollu' and of course, that famous 'Thakathaka thai thai thakathaka thai thai--' follows.
27. Pudhiyadhor ulagam seivom- Pallandu Vaazhga-TMS & co-KVM
The only song which TMS got in Pallandu Vaazhga- an indication of the changing equations. Bharathidasan's song.
- 1975 to continue--

Neel, Maargazhi pookaley is a lovely song- (perhaps the only duet of VJ with TL Maharajan).
Many thanks for it- Sughamo sugham, manamo manam--!

Saravanan -
My compliments on your on-going compilation of VJs (chronological) hits. It kindles nostalgia, and re-opens time in a simple, refreshing way. Kudos!
There was a song (a duet, I believe,) by SPB/VJ in Kannada, which went "Besuge, Besuge, Jeevanadhella Sundara Besuge " (an Ode to Summer, I guess.) This same tune was re-cycled by VB in tamizh (either Aadu Puli Aattam or some other film around that time,) and the song went "Uravo Thanimai, Ninaivo Inimai...Kadhalin Perumai." (I might have got the order of words mixed - but this is the gist.)
Has anyone heard this song? Can you confirm if this is a duet from the film that I think it is?
