Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Neel -
The latest additions are a very good selection. The hits with TMS (Elangayin, Naal Nalla Naal) are wondrous.
Nadagame Ulagam and Medaiyil are out of this world. Thank you for being so thoughtful, and so generous with your time and efforts.
I can only ask for MORE!

AVR,
yes we had a diff of opinion about Salil C- My opinion being that he has half adozen tunes- very good ones no mistaking that - which he rehashes time & again & also replicates into other indian languages. In short an overrated composer . you obviously didn't agree & because we were going off track- was it Visu_ramu & S-J thread i suggested we may discuss it offline. My offer still stands.
naaz,
bulls eye.
adavaril ethanai per & sakkarai panthalil are both from Pattampoochi.( Directed by AS Prakasam)
it is rather a shock to find kamal lipsync TMS.
Sathyam starred sivaji & grown up(?) Kamal for the first time. Kamal was then a dancing bimbo who couldn't emote in tragic situations. I remember The Hindu review specifically mentioned that he should learn from the senior. That he did & how is now part of Tamil film history!

Hi Neel,
We all owe you for the nice songs day by day.
May be you can add the Saravanan's chronology of VJ songs in your site. Very interesting to read..

Priya, you are welcome.
Siva, good suggestion. Let me ask Saravanan.
Saravanan, is it fine with you if I uploaded your posts in my website? Could you please send me an email. Also, I have another question for you. I always wondered why VJ did not sing in Aval Oru Thodarkathai. Do you know? PS, LRE and SJ had one song each. (I have the same question about MSV's Krishnagaanam in which one of the ladies actually had two songs and none for VJ). However, MSV/KB combination gave all four divas a song each in Marocharitra and Ninaithale Inikkum which brought grandeur to those albums.

Cinema Virumbi, thanks for the information.
So we have one more song by VJ in 1974:
16. Sugham Sugham ithu - Paadhapoojai- TMS- Jaya-Vijaya.
The opening lines are, according to Cinema Virumbi:
"Sugam Sugam idhu, naan suvaithu rasippathu......
Manavarai alangaram kalaiyatha munne, malar manjappalliyil vilaiyadu kanne and so on.," (Ragam- Anandabhairavi)
Jaya-Vijaya were a duo, who had earlier composed music for 'Shanmugapriya' (1973)- it had the famous 'Kundrangal aadi varum'-PS. If I remember right, they also composed music for the controversial 'Pappathi'(1979) stg: Jaiganesh and Rathidevi. (Not Rathi Agnihotri)
Priya, you're right about "Vayasupponnu' being for Poornima. 'Yaarathu' and 'Naalai mudhal' were for Radha and 'Vayasupponnu' and 'Oru thamarai mottu' were for Poornima.
Reg. Unakku naan sondham, its definitely from 'Unnai thaan thambi'. Onne onnu kanne kannu(1974) had music by V Kumar. Stg. Sivakumar and Jayachitra. I remember 2 songs from it- 'Kannellam un vannam' -SPB & K Swarna and 'Paal manam poo manam'-SPB & PS.

1975:
By now VJ had established herself as a front ranking singer in tfm, and enjoyed the continued patronage of MSV, which was of immense importance. As MSV was still calling the shots, other MDs also started gyrating towards VJ. That, and the fact that VJ was undoubtedly talented, trained, gifted with a superb voice, and with an utterly flawless pronunciation to boot, added to her impeccable credentials, making her harvest a bumper crop of songs this year. In addition to MSV, VB and SG for whom she had sung earlier, opportunities to sing under the baton of veterans like KVM, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, V Kumar and GK Venkatesh came knocking at her door in 1975 and she made the best use of them.
Let us enumerate her songs one by one:
16.Malligai mullai poo pandhal- Anbey Aaruyire- MSV
A song which will definitely find a place of pride in any collection of VJ solos.
But, first about the film- in one word: TRASH.- Starred Sivaji, Manjula, Nagesh, Major, Sukumari and innum palar. Directed by AC Thiurulogachander. It was highly irritating to see a fat Sivaji, hiding his pot belly behind coats of incredible hues, playing a fool with a capital ‘F’ (naïve or gullible is simply not enough). And much to my chagrin, his name in the film was ‘Saravanan’!!!
Another song in the film was the eminently forgettable TMS-PS duet- ‘Kamadhenuvum Somabaanamum’.
This song has a bespectacled Manjula explaining to Sivaji, on their first night, the significance of marriage and why people get married!!!
Trust MSV and VJ to come up trumps even with an impossible situation like this, and what a memorable song it turned out to be:
Malligai mullai poo pandhal
Maragatha maanikka pon oonjal
Manjal vaazhai maamarangal
Pachchai maavilai thoranangal
Ellaam etharkkaga, namakku kalyanam adharkkaga.
The song brings a traditional Tamizh kalyanam (and the shanthi muhoortham as well!) in front of our eyes. I love the place where she sings ‘Mandhiram sollum medayile, mangalam vaadhiyam muzhangayile, azhangan ungal aruginile, amarndhiruppal indha manamagale, with the lovely repetition of the last line - simply out of the world!
17. Muththamizhil paada vandhen- Mel Naattu Marumagal- Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan
APN’s film about how a western girl gets married into an Indian household and imbibes traditional Indian values and teaches the family a thing or two return.
It was now Sivakumar’s turn to be paired with a foreigner, going the path traversed by MGR (Ulagam Sutrum Valiban) and Muthuraman (Uyiraa Maanamaa). Sivaji would do it later in ‘Pilot Premnath’, as would Kamal and Rajini (Sattam En Kayil and Priya). Besides this pair, the film had Kamal and Jayasudha, the other marumagal, who despite being an Indian is attracted by western thoughts.
This song has the mel naattu marumagal singing in chaste tamizh:
Muththamizhil paada vanthen
Muruganaye vanangi nindren
Thiththikkum kumaran peyaril
Deiveega azhagai kanden
There is indeed ‘Deiveega azhagu’ in this song. It proceeds so beautifully:
Velan endraal veeran varum
Kandan endraal karunai tharum
Shanmuganai charan adaindhaal
Sangeetham paada varum
Understandably, I love the line- Aarupadai veetil odi vilayaadum Swaminathaney,
Saravananey!
18. Kalimagal kai veenai muzhanguthamma- Mel naattu Marumagal- Kunnakkudi
This song (Solos page 1 in Neel’s site) has VJ singing for both the marumagals, one who praises the Indian ethos and the other who is all for phirangee ideas. VJ swings so effortlessly between both the styles, though she sounds a bit contrived in the western parts. Of course, let me hasten to add that this is just my opinion, lest some indignant VJ fan should haul me over coals for making this statement!
19. Pallaandu pallaandu- Mel naattu marumagal- TK Kala- Kunnakkudi
This song is sung during the ‘Sashtiapthapoorthi’ of the parents of Sivakumar and Kamal. Lyrics by Geethapriyan.
It goes like this:
Pallaandu pallaandu vaazhiyavey
Palakodi nooraayiram nanmayellaam adaindhu—
20. How wonderful—how beautiful—Melnaatu marumagal- SPB-Kunnakkudi
I am not really sure about the lyrics- Its been ages since I’ve heard it. I remember another line ’Heaven seems to be very near’. I vaguely remember Kamal dancing with his ex-wife Vani Ganapathi (Guest appearance) for this song.
Mel Naattu Marumagal was a big hit for Kunnakkudi and Vani. Henceforth Kunnakkudi would ensure that VJ would have at least one song in all his ventures.
Other hit songs in this film: Usha Uthup’s ‘Life is a flower’ and the duet 'Sugam tharum ithu sorgalogamey’ by an unknown duo- Rajesh and Manohari.
--Much more to come in 1975--

Hey Saravanan,
I share absolutely with your thoughts on the song "Malligai Mullai Pooppandhal". Me too felt the same way. In fact I started loving VJ songs after this song.
How do you manage to learn all this? How long you have been tracking this?
I appreciate your finer observations about MSV giving PS, VJ, and SJ each a song in Ninaiththale Inikkum, and Maro Charithra. For me that is the Golden Era of tamil cinema when these ever green favourites sang along with my all time ever green favourite SPB

Neel D -
The song from Janani is a rarity. Your site is turning into a place for old, new and immortal VJ melodies.
Sivaselvam/Saravanan -
"Malligai Mullai" is an outstanding song, no doubt. But when you see a bespectacled Manjula (THICK FishEye Frames - very retro.) at the back of your mind while hearing the song, and an hamfisted Sivaji doing the "appavi" (more like padupaavi!) number for the nth time, mascara and pomade vazhunjufying all over the jowly face...
Shudder.
