Hari,
Thanks for the info. I'll definitely get these albums.
[>>digression]
Yes, as you have pointed out, we guys never give a damn about the presentation and packaging. Most of Echo's cassette overlays were mediocre, gaudy and ameteurish to the core. In those days, the only design that stood out was that of Anjali. The quality has improved in the nineties (especially after Mani's arrival)but the designers are not paying attention to the ;egibility of text. They choose teh tiniest of fonts and print them over a non-contrasting photograph. Well, I guess I've lamented enough..

I watched the malayalam film Kaalapaani recetly, though a seemingly earnest attempt, the screenplay wasn't very gripping. Anyways, the highlights of the film were the Music (IR) and the Cinematography (Santosh Sivan). I thoroughly enjoyed the sound raja created for the film. Especially the BG score. Man, was it haunting!!! Unlike many composers he doesn't just play the tunes of songs as instrumentals and call it BG score.
I am dying to see the Mal. film Guru, just to experience the BG score. I'm sure he has made a terrific score to match (or surpass) the songs! BTW, I saw a song, GuruCharanam Nada from the above film and the picturisation wasn't very good. Has anyone seen this movie? Have they done justice to the songs?
(One of my all-time favorites, 'Poove Sempoove' is also IMO, the worst-picturised!!!)

Neels,
They have, to some extent. MinnAram mAdathu and aruna kiraNa were decently picturised.
ThathAram is a nara-bali song!!!!! U might wonder why such a beauty of a composition for a nara-bali song...
This is where raja excels....As per the story a character is gonna be given as bali to their goddess and the goddess happens to be the goddess of sound. To please the goddess they play their best instruments and tune (while other MDs wud 've given some theemidhi numbers , Raja gives the best tune for this)
dEva sangeetham depicts a blind man's meloncholy while aruNa kiraNa forms the climax of the movie.

Watching Apoorva Sagotharargal. The score is so easy and the songs so melodious. I am watching it a second to watch Appu and the score and the songs and Raja. I am very proud of this work of Kamal and Raja.

Sree, thanks for the info. I have just finished watching the video 5 times! (Another few times to go!) Acting, music and screeplay are classy and memorable. I will be watching the Hindi version and find out if there was anything different. Do you know if the songs were different in the Hindi version?

After watching Apoorva Sahothargal (about 7 times now, even though the print was more or less transparent) I feel that Raja cannot be outdone or has been outdone. IR and MSV are two different institutions and should not be compared at all. However, their musical approaches may be compared and the traditions they adopted may be compared. MSV makes us feel the power, depth of the thousands of year old traditions and the vast repertoire of Indian classical music in his compositions. IR has made attempts to garnish that tradition with the grandeur of western musical styles. On an analysis, a composer (MSV, Salil) who is firm believer in Indian musical traditions is able to bring out a vastly superior and profound output tthan one (IR) who believes in fusion of different forms of music or one who is experimenting and exploring the blending various forms which results in some significant losses (loss of power in melody) and some brilliant gains (exciting sounds from orchestration). Therefore IMHO, MSV's beliefs result in very Indian music while IRs took greater risks in exploring musical techniques never before carried out in the world.

Raja fan - you posting is full of contrdictions:
a) Raja `cannot' be outdone or `has been' outdone - which is correct IYO?
b) You say `IR and MSV are two different institutions and should not be compared at all' and then immediately step into a not-very-well-balanced-kind-of comparison! -your objectives are quite unclear.....

Illayaraja gave music to 'Mahadev' - a very big banner film with Vinodh khanna from the same producer of 'Sadma' (Moonram Pirai) Romu. N.Sippy.
The songs were a total white wash. The songs were rehash of popular tamil songs like 'Andha Nilava than kaiyile pidichen ..'. Illayraja failed to Hindiize the tamil songs and it is unfair to blame the North INdians for rejecting him. The story goes that IR was so adamant of the tunes, Vinodh
Khanna stormed out of the recording theatre after hearing the songs demanding a change in MD, but IR prevailed beacuse the Producer wanted IR.
The other film which Illayaraja failed miserably was 'Kamaagni' directed by Ashok Kumar and acted by 'Tina Munium'. The songs were a drab that the casettes were not even available in stores.
I understand we all feel IR is the greatest MD in the Indian film industry, but he failed to exploit his talent in the Hindi film industry, which I agree also failed to use him.
But blaming the Hindi Film Industry totally is not fair and does not reflect the truth

I remember that a old TFM regular (and a RMIM frequenter) Ravi Krishna had written very eloquently about Kamaagni. rAjA's music in this music is supposed to be OOTW (out-of-this-world).
Unfortunately I have not heard this film's music. Anybody who has heard this music - can you please comment ?
- From: SitaRam (@ portal.ameritech.com) on: Tue Jun 22 11:42:14 EDT 1999
pg, I heard the album. Only the title song is nice, the other four songs were different, one by sharon prabhakhar and not impressive at all. about mahadev, the movie itself was a big flop. i had heard the songs, they were like very negiligently done and that is probably why khanna saheb walked out. IR does not care much for Hindi films after Sadma was not accepted by the public and I don't blame the Northies because they love melody over orchestration and Sadma was too much orchestration and too different from the current popular and accepted standards. Plus, the biggest drawback was the jaundiced support of the radio stations in making sadma popular in the north.

Aur ek prem kahani, is such a wash out. The sad part is, all the songs were one of IRs best in tamil, but he some what
failed to deliver that magic in hindi. It makes you feel, as though IR worked in that project against his wish. Lyrics are so
bad, tunes are so difficult to sing ( forget about humming), I like to hear from any northie about the experience of hearing
this awful album. To me, I dont want to mention this album to anyone.

Guys,
Ramaswamy Gireesan will be uploading two fabulous songs, one each from Mahadev and Kamagni shortly. I had mailed him this and some of IR's non TFM music a week ago since he asked me to help him create a page for this category. I guess they should be up by the end of this month. Judge the quality for yourself.

Chanced to hear `Adukku malliga' last week..after a long time. Wow! What a great tune and sweet music! Added to them are the excellent singing of SPB & SJ! The violin sounds...the flute... the percussion (like kids eating ice cream, I'm prompted to say `mmmm...delicious'..)!
Folks, just bring to your memory the line `maampoove, ilam poongatre, maarbodu enaithaalatte'....IR's grand repertoire of folk music talents in display! (Someone can probably talk about SPB's `sangathis' in the `sangathis' thread!!)
