Dorairaj: SANKARA NADHASWARUBAHARA is in MADHYAMAVATHI, Omkara is in Sankarabarnam - I think they did it to confuse people. The other song with a Raga change of the original is DORAGUNA, which is a Thyagaraja Krithi set in BILAHARI, but in the Sankarabarnam film, it's sung in Kalyani.

Vasu: Jalakku is certainly in Chakravakam, I'm not too sure about Anandha Kuyilin, I didn't like the song much, so I didn't take close notice.....

Mahalaxmi:
Margali poove is in Suddha Dhanyasi, with some parts in Hindolam, where ARR has used the Shruthi Bedham technique....hence, a confusing one to identify.
Vande mataram - The Original was in DESH too, I believe.....

Ragapriyan: I'm a bit unsure, we need someone like SRIKANTH to help us. As far as I know, C Major in Western equals Sankarabarnam in Carnatic and Bilaawal in Hindustani, except the fact that the latter two have Paryogams and Gamakams which are exclusive to them, while C Major is a straight scale.
In the song you speak about, if the M2 occurs, It may be MISHRA YAMAN, as that is basically Sankarabarnam, with the M2 occurring. If the song has a Kalyani sound to it, Mishra Yaman, is a little like it too. It is like a mix of Sankarabarnam and Kalyani. It is a Hindustani Ragam, rarely used in Carnatic Music.....I'd like to hear this song, is it available on the web? I may be able to give a definite comment then.

Thanks Geetha for confo. Ive won 50% of the bet :).
Mahalaxmi:
I tried playing margali poove on the keyboard basing it on Hindolam. only diff. betn Hindolam & Sudhadhanyasi is the former uses M2 (s g2 m2 d1 n2 s), while SD uses Pa. its extremely pleasant to hear just by traversing the notes of hindolam. I could almost play the full song using hindolam notes itself (of course no gamakas, thats where i believe arr probably uses Pa-Da, or Ma-Pa shakes)
to all:
presently im hobbying "converting" songs into keyboard note equivalents, anybody willing same can open up.
Cheers

Hi
Im sorry i gave the wrong swaras for hindolam and sd. hindolam is sg2m1d1n2s, SD is sg2m1pn2s. they differ in Pa & D1 not as i stated in prev. post. just a slip.

Mahalaxmi:
Once I tried playing jana gaNa mana on Keyboard.
It appears to use only the white keys and runs
almost one full octave. So my guess is that it
is in Shankarabharanam. If you are interested
I can post the Keyboard notes for it here.

Geetha:
I don't know if the song, yE shaam is available on the web.
But you should be able to easily get an audio cassette containing
songs from the movie, Katti Pathang from some audio store in the UK.
The movie's songs continue to be popular since the 60's and even
now. Apart from this wonderful song it also has excellent tunes such
as pyaar dhiwaanaa hOthaa hai by Kishore and naa kOyi
umang hai by Lata. The songs are worth listening a thousand times!
For yE shaam, once the first swara is taken to be Pa (of the
lower octave) and others set in relation to it, all swaras come
in line with Shankarabharanam. There are no foreign swaras creeping
in. Anyway I would be still be interested in knowing whether it is
correct to call this shifted look as Shankarabharanam.
I have one question about another song. Yesterday I was trying to
trace the song, kungumapottin mangalam from the movie,
Kudiyirundha Kovil. It is a beautiful song. It appears to me that
much of the song revolves around m1, p, d1 and n1, with some occurences
of g2 and S. The song's pallavi starts from p and ends in p. If this
is the case, which raga should I classify this song in?
(P.S. I am using the s r1 r2 g1 g2 m1 m2 p d1 d2 n1 n2 S
notation. So watch out: what I call as g2 and n1, you may be used to
calling them as g3 and n2.)

Hi Ragapriyan
I am not sure if you read my last note. Its Ok if you are not convinced but there is definitely a M2 in the last line of the anupallavi/charanam. Infact the beauty of this line is the use of M2. I am talking about Ye shaam... if you are wondering.

Shashi:
Yes, I did read your last posting about M2. But,
as I mentioned in my first posting about the song
(in which I gave the notes as far as I could trace)
I did not trace fully till the end of the charanam.
I will sit down with my keyboard and see where
M2 occurs. Then I will get back with a comment
on that.

Shashi:
I do not remember well the end part of the
anupallavi/charanam of yE shaam. So I am
trying to get the song recorded from somewhere.
But I understand from what you say, that at the
point where the anupallavi/charanam ends and
the song gets back to the pallavi, the M2 occurs.
Perhaps to have a smooth transition?
Thanks for all your answers.

In the movie, Kavikkuyil, (MD: IR) Balamurali
Krishna has sung the following song..
aayiram kOdi kaalangaLaaga.
Then, in the devotional album, Krishna Gaanam,
(MD: MSV) there is this song...
kOdhaiyin thiruppaavai
I feel a lot of similarities between these two
songs. By any chance, are they set in the same
raga?

i Ragapriyan Its good that you are trying to get the song recorded (its a wonderful song). I think the last line of the anupallavi/charanam has an M2 to give different
feel ( a sort of freshness); but immediately the composer continues with Pa and while coming down is back on his M1 on the way to Sa. MD's frequently use this
technique. Raja's favorite is N3/N2 usage; MSV numerous so difficult to pick out his favorite; ARR's favorite is G3/G2. This shifts are quite common in cinemusic.
Infact some of the Hindustani ragas and a few carnatic ragas also have this prayoga.

Hi every one!!
I am very much interested in music. I regret not
learning carnatic music during school years.
I started to learn and I have notes and play piano a little bit, mostly self taught. It is clear when not use anthra kantharam when I play. but when it comes to listening I have no idea.
I would like learn how to find ragas for songs...
Does any one have any suggestions?
Are there cassettes ? if so who?
