Mani: 'Nanri solla' has KEERAVANI touches to it. It probably the Pure Mela or a derivative.
Dhandapani: Arisi Kutthum sounds a lot like Suddha Saveri, your first guess......It may have some accidentals, which have lead Murali Shankar to point to Sankarabarnam, it's Mela. Another song in Suddha Saveri is Manamagale in Devar Magan/Adi Aathi nenjil Pattan poochi parakudhaa in Pasum Ponn........The Graha Bedham will cause the Mohanam sound.....
Ragapriyan: R1 G1 M2 D1 N1 N2 notes...a tough one.
This Ragam seems to be a mixture of notes from SALAGAM - Mela 37 (without Sa and Pa - with N1) and JALARNAVAM - Mela 38 (without Sa and Pa - with N2) - I will consult my RAGA PRAVAHAM book, as I can't at the moment find an Internet source which gives any Janyas of these two Ragas. One of the N's can be considered accidental, but the name of the Raga may exist anyway.

Dear Ragapriyan
Your question might have a simple answer than you think?!
Your notes R1 G1 M2 D1 N1 N2 can be interpreted as Sa R2 M1 Pa D2 N1 if you did grahebeda and considered your R1 as Sa.
From the notes you have traced, looks like the first line starts with R1 and ends R1. This would be extremely peculiar to say the least. Secondly, most of the Music Directors in Film music try to show you a Sa or Pa during the first few lines to establish a baseline.
Dear YGeetha
Your explanation about Salagam and Jalarnavam may indeed be right, but my guess is for the most part Ragapriyan's tracing has a much simpler interpretation. I think his notes are basically sudha saveri with N1 as per his notes which have the sudha dhanyasi touch to it as well.
However, I do have a doubt about Salagam and Jalarnavam you mention. When they perform these ragas how is one to tune the Tambura???

YGeetha:
I think I confused you with my notations.. Recall
that I am using s r1 r2 g1 g2 m1 m2 d1 d2 n1 n2 S
R1 etc. So, for example the fourth note I am
calling as G1 whereas I think you are used to
calling it as G2. Apologies for any confusion
caused. I request your revised views.
Sashi:
Fixing s at r1 as you suggest, it appears that
Harikamboji fits well because G2 (i.e, M1 shifted
down one note) is occuring in the higher octave.
However, I do not know whether the song's sequence
of notes resembles the usual patterns of HKamboji.
I don't know if you have already found this out:
This song is: yE shaam mastaani from the
movie, Katti Pathang; MD: RDBurman. It is a very
beautiful melody, sung with a happy but expectant
mood, by an young fellow. (Singer: Kishore, Actor:
Rajesh Khanna; movie came in the 1960's.) I got
interested in the song because the mood of the
song appeared close to ennai thaalaatta varuvaaLaa
of Kadhalukku Mariyadhai. I wanted to find out if
the 2 songs are in the same scale, buit clearly
they are not. One resemblance I can see between
the 2 songs is the similar way in which the notes
ascend and descend in the first line of the song;
also the beats and timing in that line are close!
P.S. I didn't give the identity of the song in my
first posting simply because, if I mention it,
Ravi will immediately remove the posting saying
it is about HFM. :-))

Dear Ragapriyan
Your clarification makes a little bit more sense.
As I told you the song does not start in R1 as you thought. Also, you had not mentioned the M1 (as per your previous notation); this seems to be a new note that occurs in the higher octaves as per your recent posting. Note that I understood your scale notation (sar1r2g1g2m1m2p....) and I new you were not talking in terms of the sar1r2r3g1g2g3... notations.
Anyway, just from the song you mention now (ye shaam...) I think the first note i.e "ye" is lower octave Pa and the pallavi ends in Sa. I will let you know of the raga tomorrow.
Bye

Shashi:
Thanks for the comment on yE shaam. I don't
understand how you placed "yE" at lower octave Pa.
Please explain. Is it just by looking at the last note
in the pallavi? Anyway, for the moment, if I assume
that to be the case, then the song's raga seems
to be Shankarabharanam (F# major scale). Am I
guessing it right?
P.S. I am glad that my notations didn't confuse
you. Can you tell me which is the right notation
to follow hereafter?

Shashi:
I forgot to add.. I know very very little about
ragas and their characteristics. All that I do
is take a particular song, listen to it closely
a humpteen number of times, and toil with the
Keyboard until I get it right. Then I list down
the notes in the usual s r1 .. notation. This is
what I did for yE shaam! I am really
learning much more than that through interaction
with experts like you and Geetha. So I would
appreciate any detailed comments that will help me
in my learning about ragas.

Isn't SHANKARABARNAM the C MAJOR Scale?
- From: Vasu (@ mail.netrisk.com)

Shankarabharanam is indeed the C Major scale. or vice-versa ;-).
there is even somewhere on the net ragas corresponding to western major/minor scales. If anybodys interested i can post it.
Cheers

Is the song "ilamai idho idho" from the movie "sagalakalAvallavan" based on SankarAbharanam? (or its scale?)
- From: Ragapriyan (@ 202.54.37.18)
on: Sat Nov 21 23:01:21 EST 1998
Geetha:
I simply placed Sa at F# and called it Shankarabaranam.
I may be wrong in saying such a thing.
Is there a raga name for F# major scale?

Is "Gowri Manohariyai kanden" in Gowri Manohari
Raga ? Also "Keeravani iravilae kanavilae" in
keeravani Raga ? I assumed that bcoz the song starts with that name ?

Hi Ragapriyan Final answer on Ye Shaam...---based mainly on Shankarabharanam notes with an additional M2 at the anupallavi's/charanam's last line. I cannot
name a raga for this song, but as usual in cinematic music songs based on a particular scale with added notes are quite common. Finally, the songs opening note, ie.
'ye' is lower octave Pa and the pallavi closes with Sa. This makes perfect sense as whenever you end a song you would always want to comeback to the 'baseline'
so to speak.
