Yet another good one, bb!
Refreshing lyrics(Snehan?) exploring the possibility of the existence of a platonic friendship between man and woman, without love peeping in. But the hero seems to want to make some allowance for love too, though he too casts his vote for friendship as the song ends!
Arunkumar, as the young architect who comes to the village to supervise the construction, and Shamitha, the pitiable girl who's betrothed to her imprisoned uncle were convincing in their performances. Raj Kiran, Manorama and Chandrasekar did a good job too.
My pick from the album is the flagship song 'Avaravar vaazhkkaiyil aayiram aayiram' sung soulfully by Bharadwaj himself. 'Virumbuthae manasu virumbuthae' by Chitra also had some imaginative lyrics.
I think Chitra Sivaraman first sang 'Athini Chithini' in Tenali ?

a Nice song by Yugendran & Chitrasivaranam
Bharadwaj consistently giving chance to Yugendran to Promote him(paarthen paarthen) but still he couldnt come up
chitra sivaraaman introduced by ARR in tenali sang this song, Athan varuvaaga, Ale ale ..
a nice voice but in b/t chitra/AS/Sujatha so no specific individuality.
Snehan - budding lyricist but nor consistent
but he excelled in this film both this & Avar avar had excellent words
Bharadwaj - an under rated Composer. Though he had transformed into "OH PODU" style his works in Amarkalam, KAadhal mannan, Pooveli are remarkable
He doesnt need to do a deva style song but for existence he's doing those.
his other notable songs
1. Unnai paartha pinbu- Kaadhal Mannan
2. Vaanum Mannum -Kaadhal Mannan
3. Oru poo ezhudhum Kaditham - Pooveli
4. Idharku Peyar than KAadhala - Pooveli
5. Unnodu vazhadha - amarkalam
6. Satham illadha thanimai ketten - Amarkalam
Shametha,Arunkumar did a fair job .
did they get more chances ??
Thanks For the Song
& Request for SOTD
1. Singara Punnagai kannara kandale - Mahadevi by M.S.Rajeshwari & Balasaraswathi
2. Kan moodum velayile - Mahadevi by PS & AMR
3. 8 7 6 by T.A.Mathuram
thanks

Cheran's " Pandavar Bhoomi" is a very sincere attempt in bringing out the joys and sorrows of village life and puts out a strong case for people not deserting the villages. The music except for Eh Samba( on second thoughts even including E S!) suited the story. Soothing, unobtrusive and making a point. No wonder people have all but forgotten the movie and the songs!
Cheran has -for me at least- occupied the place vacated by "En Inia Tamizh makkale". I am only worried that the acting bug in him doesn't take over completely.
Coming back to P Bhoomi I did not very much like the songs before I saw the picture. But having seen the movie the songs stand out. Barathwaj is one composer who has the talent but who won't go the whole way. I feel when his heart is not in the right place he comes out with half baked tunes. Probably itheyellam poda vendi irukke enra virakthi!
Parthen Sirithen and Roja Kootam also are notable efforts of Barathwaj!
Naaz, Point taken. How about Asariri paadalgal an alasal. I want somebody to propose and another to second- I'll do the posting!

Typo
Read Parthen Rasithen not Parthen Sirithen!

Chinna Chinna aasai - When I first listened to this song, I thought it was by VJ. But the song that bowled me complelely was 'Pudhu vellai mazhai'. Till date it remains as one of the best songs of ARR.
'Thozha'- The tune is quite stale and reminds me of endless SAR numbers, some old 'Ododi vilayaiadu' song. But the movie deserves mention.

vengayam, I for one, liked Cheran's acting in solla marandha kadhai. very natural and down to earth. If he chooses his roles well, he can be a class act.

Saravanan 'kaNNeeril ezhudhadhe' was the first film for Vanitha as heroine.(if im not wrong her first film is adukku malli) I think its a thriller and i remember seeing the posters in rajakumari theatre, Madras. There were 2 SJ solos, one rain song and the other one is a sad song.

A very nice choice. But the interludes are very confusing in this good song...sometimes spoiling the mood of the song as well (a sudden Reethigowlai violin piece for eg).Well picturised one this song...providing you with ,probably the solitary occasion of tolerating Arun Kumar .
Like others my vote too would be for "avar Avar vaazhkayil".(without the patented patti potta UW one could hardly recognise Raj kiran!)That song that should have taken Bharathwaj to the top rung. But Gemini came and that proved to be the steroid dose for Bharathwaj.
Chinna chinna asai-One song which casio or Yamaha owe their marketshare in India to.
Ananda thandavam paatil varum varigal "Veenaikulle 108 ragangalai oLichuvechen"-KeyboardkkuL marinthiruntha 108 ragangalai kandupidachathu Rehmanthan. The song simply changed the face of music, song picturisation(although Vasanth s Niveda was a forerunner in that).
VM s Chinna chainna Asaigal (sung by Chitra-MD MSV for DD) became chinna chinna asai with Rehman-minmini.This song will sound fresh even after 100 years because of the mood and the simplicity in tune and lyrics.Roja was a milestone in all aspects.A simple imagination of how Seetha would have reacted had Rama been kidnapped (Rama singing Kadhal Rojave in Asokavanam!)-peepy dialogues by Sujatha, good looking Swami ,Madhoo,Rajivs nice camera work -a wholesome entertainer.Roja just proved the obvious -the southern film industry was better all along. When it was released in north it was a hit because the northerners read it as "roaz aa"(come daily) and there was repeat audience for 100 days.

bb,
I am not against Cheran acting To quote verbatim " I am only worried that the acting bug in him doesn't take over completely" I only feel he should not give up direction.
In R Sunderrajan's case & P vaasu I am all for their acting and not directing. Catch my point!

OISG,
Right up to the stance he took while facing the bowler he reminded me of Richie Richardson. The posterior protruding out. But there ended the pretensions. But as i said earlier Robin singh has aframed photo of him in his pooja room . it was thanks to sujith he got the break and went on to play over 100 matches!
re hairs you can make others pull out theirs in despair if u contribute. Think about it!

Saravanan
really enjoyed your comments!!!!
Whether the thread will analyse the songs from 'mudi' films, it is definitely worth discussing the performances of all 4 mudi irakkum ,,,,nadippil mudi soodiya mannargaL!
Your comments brought back memories of M.R.Radha's performance in H.Mr.Jamindar. anthap padam pArththa pinbu M.R.Radha rasigar manRaththil sErnthu vittEn.
especially the scenes of learning dining table manners, learning kaththi saNdai, horse riding, going after thr gardener with a long beard.....
remember the introductory scene of MRR with the classic GKV song!
sonthamum illE bandhamum illE
sonna idaththil amarnthu koLkiRaar
naangaL mannarumillE manthiriyillE
vaNakkam pOttu thalaiyai saaykkiRaar
Kavinjarin varikaLai padam paarththa pinbu athikam rasikka mudiyum.
I think Poyykkaal kudhirai was film version of crazy mohan's drama - marriage made in saloon.
The film has a good song by SPB.

Ahha yesterday was no:300 great... congrats bb.I missed it yesterday.was not able to get online yesterday.no power in virginia.
Anyways Roja was definitely august... college join panni.. nan cut adichutu devi paradisela blackla vangi patha first padam.i can still remeber the whole theater packed with college students.and the great comments that used to come during the typicall manirathnam dialogue intervals.
i also saw the song in oliyum oliyum and the cinemetography was awesome.santhosh sivan changed the whole cinemetography technology in tamil films with roja.
Roja was great in lot of ways. The movie that was loved from kashmir to kanyakumari. The movie that was the crossover movie for maniratnam into hindi films.
Rehman the new music sensation, came into the industry with a bang. And for vairamuthu it will be a very special song.Life came full circle for him.It started the rise of ARR/VM and fall of IR.
i used to pitty him then.during that time you will see vairmuthu only with a few non IR films and definiely in all the telugu dubbed films. After being sidelined for so long ,a song that brought him back into mainstream.
"panni thillikkul nanum paduthu kolla asai".beautiful lyrics, beautiful music, beautiful picturisation."chinna chinna aasai" will always remain a great song.

pandavar bhoomi was a great movie...The theme of the movie is... in mahabaratha pandavas went on "vannavasam for 16 yrs" beared all the hardships, only to come back to the place where they were born.Similarly we moving out in search of jobs and money from our native place, is also like a "vannavasam" and the "santhosha kaalam" is only when we return back to the native place after earning money.
The film has a nice opening scene.rajkiran who enters the village after a long time ... goes to the nearest water source, drinks the water from his long missed home town and the familiar taste brings back all his childhood memories in a flash.
This is a nice song about friendship between a man and a woman.nice lyrics. But after all this,in the end they marry each other :(.
