Chinna Chinna Aasai was a break for Vairamuththu.
But, VM wrote few more lyrics on same pattern -
Poo-p-Pookkum Oosai, Megam Karukkudhu, Konjum Mainakkale.

why don't you all start a nice new topic where we can all split hair?
I do read Vani Jayaram & this post regularly but there is very little of interest elsewhere in the forum?

Friends,
When 'Roja' was dubbed into Hindi, it became popular gradually thro' word-of mouth only. Initially, people couldn't make out the meaning of 'Roja' (or that it's the name of the heroine), as it reminded them of 'Roza', the Ramzan period/ fasting!
For ease of dubbing, SOToday has been translated as "dil hai chOtaa saa! chOtee see aashaa!" But strictly 'aashaa' means 'hope'- nambikkai(+ edhirpaarppu), which is very distant from Tamil 'aasai' (desire- 'ichchaa','tamannaa' or 'chaahat'!)

bb, thanks for the nice selection... I had been planning to start to thread on 'First day impact of ARR's entry'! The last morning I ever sat back and read something with refreshing coffee was Hindu's Young World at home several years ago.
Thalapathi/Guna were both Nov 4, 91 releases(same day had that much-discussed IR interview on DD). During Aug 92 time, Annamalai was having a good time, it was a 25/6/92 release. I am very sure KB's Vaaname Ellai came much earlier as my friends used to sing it when we played in the 92 summer hols itself.
After I-Day 92, I was moved to the window seat at the very back of the classroom on the second floor, giving a tempting Malgudi-like view of the busy road/bus stops in front of the school. Sitting next to me was a truant chap who whiled away the whole day looking out, humming Chinna Chinna Aasai and never taking notes, putting me on the edge as the hawk-eyed Maths teacher kept giving suspicious glances in our direction! That is the first recollection I get whenever I listen to this song.
How did you guys make no mention of Kadhaal Rojave? Despite being an IR fan, I am forced to love that song since during both school and college farewells, 2 of my friends sang it on stage :-((

300 vadhu paadal kondadattam - vazhththukkal - kooda oru padam varumae? Naallaikka? :-)
Chinna Chinna Aasai was Aap Jaisa Koi's half-sister. Wispy, derivative, and nutrasweet. Perfect, in every sense, for a celebration where people talk about everything but the music! :-)

Here are two hard learned observations (I SURVIVED THE TFM-PAGE BOOTCAMP - put it on a T-Shirt and I'll buy!:-): You want serious, you start serious (and seriously watch how no one shows.)
#2: Rock - but don't rock the boat. Nice and easy is preferred; not so nice (or easy) but curious is--now see how I lost that thought? :-)

I remember being one among the first audience in Andhra to listen to the Telugu version of this song. It was on those night radio programmes which showcase coming movies. Being a Manirathnam movie, chinna chinna aasa (telugu) sounded a little like an IR tune but the progression was very unlike IR and as the song progressed further, I concluded it was not Raaja. Looking back now, congratulations to ARR for a successful 11 years.

Saravanan there is a nice SJ solo in SG's music in the early 80s movie 'Kanneeril ezhudhadhe'(*ing Vanitha). Do you remember that song?
Thanks

Very good song as 300th one.
With chinna chinna aasai only this SOTD was started. But now is PERIYA AASAI for us.
Let me talk about the song. First I thought it was Vani Jayaram who had sung that song. Later I came to know it was minmini. There is a kind of similarity among these two voices. Now VJ doesn't have chance in Thamizh movies to sing. But Minimin doesn't have voice to sing in any movies. I heard she lost her singing ability due to some throt problem.
This song is well criticized. But it is a song of change. Chinna Chinna Aasai brought Periya Periya Changes in TFM.
Already the similar lyric by Vairamuthu was tuned by MSV and was popular among DD watchers. It must be an year before the release of Roja. Any idea about that song? That time many MSV songs were popular in DD. Eg. "Aana Ponna Porandhadhenna?" picturized with Srividya and a small girl. Like that there were some more songs also. Yes. Azhahu song also. I remember some one singing "Aanaikuk Kombazhahu" and the camera showing a small wooden elephant toy.

When I first saw Roja, I was suprised
by some very very
familiar tunes. It took me sometime to
realize that there were some musical interludes
that were from ad jingles. Especially,
from Garden Vareli textiles ads. The music
was absolutely refreshing at that time, specially
pudhu vellai mazhai. When you closed
your eyes, it seemed as if cold mist
was moving right into the theater.
I was studying Engineering in Bangalore
and, if I remember right, I watched the movie, along with some of my classmates, in a theater in Malleswaram. Those were the days.

bb, the SG song 2 days back reminded me of another SG classic "Devi vandha neram"(SPB,VJ) from Vandichakram. If this hasnt been a SOTD yet it certainly deserves being so sometime in the future. I'll be glad to send you the mp3 if you dont have it. SPB is bound to hold you spellbound with his rendition.

Ramki, sorry- ‘Kanneeril ezhuthaathe’ suththama gnabagam varala : (
G Ragavan, I too remember the DD ‘Chinna chinna aasai’ (Sung by JC-VJ?)
Btw, Minimini did regain her voice, though not her place in tfm. I saw her being interviewed in Nayyaandi Darbar some years back.
And after a long time Minimini sang a short song in Kannathil Muthamittal (in the flashback). And her name appears in the titles at the end of the film too. Unfortunately, this song is not in the CD.
Raj- some other songs by Minmini that come to mind are:
Lovunna lovvu (Meera, her first song?)
Chithirai nilavu ( Vandicholai Chinrasu)
Sambo sambo(Puthiya Mugam)
Pachakkili paadum (Karuthamma)
Kuthalakkuyilae (Thirumathi Pazhanisami)
Kili irandu (Manitha Manitha)
Amman koyil kumbam(Aranmanai Kili)
Thanks for reminding me of ‘Thendral varum munnae munnae’ from Dharmaseelan- a slow and melodious duet by Arunmozhi & Minmini.

Song of the Day: thOzhaa thOzhaa from Pandavar Bhoomi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thozha.rm
- Sung by Yugendran and Chitra Sivaraman. Music by Bharathwaj. Check out this song. The interludes are beautiful. Chitra Sivaraman has done a good job in this song.
- Chitra Sivaraman (not to be confused with KSC) has sung quite a few other songs, like "aththaan varuvaaga" from Dumm dumm dumm and "ale ale" in boys.
- The film came out a couple of years back, directed by Cheran. I liked the film, especially the underplayed romantic angle between Arun Kumar and Shamitha. There is another song in the film, "malargaLaip padaiththa" that is notable too.

Saravanan, Kolangal had a pleasant song called "Therkke veesum". I believe it was also rendered by Arunmozhi/Minmini.
Today's SOTD has some interesting interludes feauturing Mandolin. IMO, Baradwaj's best is "yenakkena yerkanave" from Paarthen Rasithen.A regular song for me when driving.Wonderful tune and interludes with imaginative Mandolin pieces.
