Saravanan:
A good song! Enjoyed it. I am listening to it for the first time. The last paragraph of your description says it all.. it is SJ's voice and singing that lift the song. My guess is that Jeyachitra sings the song in the movie. In the movie, 'poNNukku thanga manasu' Vidhubala sings a song to Vijayakumar for a similar situation. I am unable to recall that song. Can you? Who was the MD for that movie? GKV?

Saravanan,
Thanks for the much needed plug for S-G. I've been championing their good ones in every TFM discussion to no avail. The only S-G movie most younguns remember is the wretched "Thaayillaamal Naanillai" song. But,kaalangaathaala SJ kaekkura manappakkuvam illai, will wait until frustrations build up and I want to scratch my nails on the wall, then SJ would be apt.
sk,
Are you thinking of "Neram Iravu Neram Idhuthaanae Uravu Neram" from PTM?

Udhaya :))--but pray listen to it, you may still like the song, your dislike for SJ notwithstanding!
sk- Udhaya has answered your query, it is 'Neram iravu neram idhuthaane uravu neram, kaanbathu oodalaa koodala'- LRE in GKV's music.
In one of GA'a interviews he mentioned this song. Apparently both IR and GA were assisting GKV at that time. They were waiting for Kannadasan to come to pen the lyrics for this song. Meanwhile GA wrote some dummy lines for the pallavi while trying out the tune. And when GKV sang the tune to Kannadasan with these lines' Neram iravu neram--', Kannadasan nodded appreciatively and retained GA's lines, and wrote the charanams alone.

Thanks.
Yes, that's the song I was trying to recall.

Saravanan, thanks for digging this out. OISG's description is pretty accurate, Asha would have rendered this in Hindi. Unconventional tune.

Saravanan -
Thanks for this SG - SJ moment. As you say, SG did have their flashes of brilliance - seemingly few and far between - but this song is not one of those. (This doesn't mean that I'd carry a card for Vadivelan Manasu Vechchan - just to be clear :-) In my very subjective, biased and little knowledge can be a dangerous thing opinion - I also find that it showcases everything that I've always found to be artificial and formally inconsistent about SJs voice. If a novice like me, with absolute minimal musical knowledge, can spot odd and recurring note shifts and throatal (falsetto) manipulation of pitch, I am often left wondering how the learned musicians in this forum let such things pass? Can someone explain how aesthetic compassion (or concession) trumps objective criticism?
Sure, the song does have mood. But the singing, if you don't mind me saying, is all over the place. :-)

Song of the Day # 300: chinna chinna aasai from Roja.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/chinnachinna.rm
300 not out and going strong! Thanks to everyone for this effort.
The song that started it all for Rahman. It was Pongal '92, we were still singing Thalapathi and Guna's tunes (both films were released deepavaLi time the previous year). After the routine programmes, it was 'pudhup paadal' time in the TV. A few magazines had hyped up Madhubala's water-soaked song, so I was eager to check it out. The song started and there was a hush in the room. After the song finished, I didn't remember much of Madhubala, or the lyrics or Vairamuthu, but kept humming the song over and over again. Here was a new sound, something that clicked immediately. ARR had arrived. That evening, my neighborhood kids and I went to Abhiraami, bought tickets at outrageous prices and caught the movie, first day.
Looking back, I think the time was ripe for a change. I had expected Aadithyan to herald the next wave, but that never happened. ARR has gone on from strength to strength, coming back often after people wrote him off. The song Chinna chinna aasai continues to linger in our memory, fresh and relevant. People have called it a nursery rhyme, rehash of veedu varai uravu and so on. But, its magic stays, at least in my heart.
- Sung by Minmini.
- This was the first song in the lyrics competition thread, where we wrote alternate lyrics to TFM songs. I too wrote a versionhttp://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/13630.5517.16.38.22.html
- Notes and lyrics for the song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/notes/arr/chi_ro.txt . Vairamuthu won his 3rd national award for this song.
- This was a song where ARR composed the tune to pre-written lyrics of Vairamuthu.

bb, Congrats on reaching the 300 mark! Best Wishes.
And a great song to celebrate it with!

If not anything, a song with "historic" significance. In my case, it was not this song that drew me to Rahman...rather "Vellai Mazhai" which completely blew my mind.
I also vaguely remember another special program soon after, where Sowcar Janaki was interviewed and she requested for 'Chinna Chinna Asai' saying something like "Andha paatu pidigaadha yaaravadhu irupaangala?".
PS: Adityan? :)))

Lord LabakuDas, of course :) turned out to be much ado about nothing :)
Sara, I think it was Pongal. Abhirami had Thalapathi and Roja running at the same time (Thalapathi clocking up days since last deepaavaLi).

Roja was for Independence day, 1992.
Adithyan had heralded a new "wave" of Gaana songs already(with Amaran) and unfortunately Deva was to ride that wave to death :-( ))
I always disagree with people who say that music had turned stale in 1992 and hence the time was ripe for ARR's entry. Saying that would be equivalent to discrediting ARR. What he did was come at a time when Raakamma kaiya thattu had still everyone listening to it awestruck and change the entire scenario in one stroke.
bb, congrats to you on the triple century..has been one pleasant ride so far..hoping to see you and the DF team break more records..

bb, perhaps Abirami had Annamalai & Roja running at the same time? Almost certain it was in August' 92 that this roja blossomed (perhaps released for Aug 15th)- Some other personal memories make me sure about this ;)

Thalapathy was only a moderate success. The annamalai theory seems more plausible.

Btw, Balachandar's Kavithalaya had 3 releases in 1992, and each film had a different MD: Vaaname Ellai- Maragadhamani, Annamalai- Deva and Roja- ARR.

As i got left, right and diagonal bashings in mail from others regarding how can i question Saravanans info, in my yesterdays post i was only wondering how comical it was to have such a name(Nagarathil Thirudargal) for SG's first film..:-)
Saravanan,hope u are not offended.:-)

LLD, far from being offended, on seeing your hilarious (as usual) rejoinder, I had a hearty laugh :)
I always enjoy your brilliant asides and OISG and I keep laughing over them often--even recently your response to Raghu in the SPB-PS/SPB-SJ thread had me in splits, that when I wanted to tell OISG about it, I was laughing so much that he rebuked me strongly to stop laughing and tell him the joke!

'varalaama' -It's SJ's one woman show.
I can say with conviction that no singer could have sung (crooned)it with the same effect as SJ , given the unconventional nature of the tune. Probably LRE could have come closer.
