talking about lifts, I was majorly disappointed when I heard the strains of Polveli Polveli, Oru Pani Thuli... from an English song. wheres the
OruG4T (naalu T) gone ?

Again, no point in discussing, and cursing over lifts.Even ARR is "reputed" to haveone of the best music samples archives and
from this point it is a q of mix n match. Well Im not belittling efforts of any one. One theory of mine is " Maybe we are using too
many western music instruments, electric based sounds, and naturally the sounds produced gels with Western notes."

Mano:
'malarey mounama' is itself an unabashed adaptation of msv's master piece'muthukkalo kangal'in 'ooty varai uravu'.
I listened to Vidya Sagar waxing eloquent on television about responses he received from fans as far as Australia. He should have redirected them to MSV .
Incidentally, IR's violin embellishments in his interludes for "Raakamma Kaiayai thattu" have been liberally adapted by ARR in his "Veerapandi-k-kottaiyile".

Mutthukalo Kangal is from Nenjirukkum Varai. They sound similar, maybe based on the same ragam brindhavana saranga.

maha/raja M: "Malare Mounama" is set in the Ragam Dharbari Kanada, "Mutthukalo Kanngal" is in Brindhavani/Brindhavana Saranga.....No connections here except for the fact that the Ragas both come from Karaharapriya......
maha: Exactly in what way do these songs(Malare and Mutthugalo) have common occurrences? I can't see it in the Ragam or Thalam/Meter.....Please enlighten me.....
Mano: About Nee kaatru Naan Maram, from Nilaave Vaa and Malare Mounama, they are both in the same Ragam and there are many similarities in the interludes and meter.....

'heard muthukkalo kangal is on the raga madhyamavathi and agreed that malare mounama is in darbari kanada. i dont' know whether madhyamavathi and d-kanada has any thing in common.

Haris: I'm sorry, I have to disagree with you about Mutthukalo Kanngal being in Madhyamavadhi(S R2 M1 P N2 S S N2 P M1 R2 S), It's quite a well known Brindhavana Saranga/Brindhavani(S R2 M1 P N3 S - S N2 P M1 R2 G2 S), as I've mentioned. The TFM raga list also backs my claim. Please take a look at this URL for Ragas of songs until 1994 - A new one is being prepared, currently.....

I too am still waiting with anticipation for a posting from MAHA, who is to give us substanciation that Vidhyasaagar has copied from Mutthukalo Kanngal....The Raga Dharbari Kanada also being a janya of the Melakartha Karaharapriya, but with such different notes and paryogams.

A fascinating person to discuss would be M.veda of the sixties and seventies....it is perhaps no coincidence that hi name sounds so similar to deva...our man was perhaps the pioneer in importing hindi songs into TFM...
Sample these :
1.oraayiram paarvaile(iru vallavargal)
== Sau baar janam lenge(sung by rafi...music director ..ravi, i guess)
2. Manam ennum medai thanile..(from anothe rof the "vallavan " series of films)
==sau saal pehle se mujhe tum se pyar tha
3. Naanathaale kangal..
==
dil pukare(SDburman's immortal melody in jewel thief)
Thats just for sample..Antha kaalathu deva avar!

Another song of IR taht intrigues me in its similarity to a old hindi song(i mean appatamana copy...I wish it weren't true, being a hard core ir-fan .But i can't deceive my ears!)
Ohoho..kaalai kuyilgale from a parthiben-mohini
starrer(the name was something like..unnidathil ennai koduthen)....
this song is an exact replica of
Khoya khoya chand ..from kala bazaar(sd burman)..
looks like raja was SD fan himself.

Here's another of DEVA's kaivannams:
baasha , i guess ,was one of greatest hits and true to form, our man has applied his 'lift' technology here also.
Azhagu..nee nadanthaal is axerox of
RD burman's
dilbar...dil se pyare from caravan
Somehow, naan autokkaran reminded me of
raja's asai nooru vagai(rajini film)
rajesh
ps: looks like im flooding this thread...but what to do..these things are flashing in my mind in instalments.

kasme vaade was from UPKAAR-A manoj kumar movie...music by kalyaanji-anandji.
I have also heard about BM'S insistence causing IR to include this song..
I will be happy if someone comes with a similar explanation for "ohoho kaalai kuyilgale".
Rang bhare badal se from chandni was tuned by the duo shiv-hari.It would be interesting to know the actual identity of this duo.....
none other than
ShivKumar Sharma (Santoor exponent) and god old ....
Hari prasad chaurasia!
tHE DUO HAS SOME GRAEAT SCORES ..including the recent Lekin and Lamhe..that , i guess, also answers someone's query about when was the last there was original score in HFM.

Rajesh : I heard the song you are talking about (resembles Khoya khoya chand), but it is not a note by note copy, the tunes sound similar that's all. A much more horrible repeat by maestro was En purushan thaan, enakku mattum thaan which is a xerox of Dum maro Dum, only the first line is a repeat. I think it was unconscious, I myself did not realise it until a second or third hearing.

Great observation Koushik. Has anybody seen the film "thai Veedu" - a Rajni starrer and pretty old? In this film there is a theme music which is none other than the "Aanandham Aanandham Paadum" of "Poovae Unakkaga" but in violins. In the same film there was one song by SJ-"Ammamma Ennannavo Kanavu". Five years before ,if some can remember, there was late night telecast of "Golden Oldies" in the Metro Channel (Chennai). In tthis I found the original. It starts, "Falling in love summer time is dynamic, its easy,so easy". The tfm song was a direct lift

Here is an observation : The song "Muttupodhu Muttupodhu" from the film duet closely resembles the Keerthana "palukey Bangaaramaayera..". There is some very close correspondence between the turns "Yeththanai sabhagal Kandom," and the corresponding turn "Palukey bangaaramaye pilachina palukavaemey". This may have been purely unintentional.
I am not stoo ure about this one but, I think ARR lifted a STRAUSS waltz theme for the BGM of RANGEELA. ( The situation is a film party in which Urmila is taken and she meets different actors/ producers etc.)

To Srinivas:
I think the waltz theme you are talking about is shown to be played in the backgroung. It is not ARR's BGM.(You know how you have that msic playing in the BG in the restaurants and at parties) Yes, but you are right, it is Strauss.

on: Wed Sep 9 20:47:20 EDT 1998
Apart from Bombay which had really good BGM, RANGEELA was the only other film in which I noticed ARR's BGM, I was really surprised that ARR had come up with such a good W.C piece till I realized that it was actually a Strauss composition.
