I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

AV, thanks for the interesting info.
I've been repeatedly asking my Malayali friends/colleagues here if they have the song. While some elders say they have heard the song, friends in my age group haven't heard it all. And no one has it. There is a cassette called 'Hits of Salil Chowdhry' containing a selection of his Malayalam songs. But it doesn't have this song (though it has a KJY/Sabita Chowdhry duet from St.Thomas) I haven't given up, though!
Vijay, glad that you reminded me. VJ did sing for us the Telugu version of 'Oru poongavanam pudhumanam'!
All, I'm sorry that some parts of the conversation might have escaped my memory. And also, the talk wasn't strictly in the same order in which I am sharing the details with you. I have tried to arrange my memories of that evening in some order, and to write accordingly.

There is another song by VJ which is just as rare to come by. It is a hindi duet with Manna Dey (MD: Jaidev) from the film Parinay: Mitwa Mitwa More Man Mitwa Aajaa Re Aajaa Re Aajaa Re. I've got the other song (Suraj Ki Garmi Se - by the Misra Brothers) but the Mitwa song still eludes. (VJ and Jaidev made music together again for Solwa Sawan - remake of 16 Vayadhinile - and the solo Pi Kahan Kahan was memorable. Lost song again.)
Similarly, there are two other songs from Khoon Ka Badla Khoon (MD: OPN) which were popular, but there is no trace of an audio-track on any website :-(
Anybody have a file of any of these? Please? :-)
Aside: The Garasana duet - Thoongadha/Viriselu (??) an interesting study in execution by the two chosen singers (KJY stays.) Alalukalalu - from SKC was a notch up on the tamizh version, although BSS did a fine job with Vizhiyil Vizhundhu.)

KJY doesn't stay. It is SPB/VJ in telugu and SJ/KJY in tamil. And the song is Kurisenu (not viriselu) from the movie Gharshana (not Garasana) - are you getting old?:-)
Alalukalalu is in a class of its own. IMHO, that is a song tailor-made for VJ (although in reality it probably is not). IR should have had VJ sing this even in tamil. Everytime I listen to this song, it sounds fresh and brand new to me. If and when I meet her in person (it will happen someday!!), alalukalalu will be the first song I would ask her to sing for me. Period. Anathineeyaraa and everything else have no choice but to follow.

It worked!! (I knew all my telugu errors will be immediately apparent to you, and you will come back and post your thoughts!! :-) Yes, old is a constant (what else is there...just aging (dis)gracefully? :-)
Thanks for all the corrections! Much appreciated!
(In all honesty, I have not heard the Gharshana duet in many months...time to check it out again!)
I doubt Aanathineeyaraa is an "unplugged" song. It needs to boom (as it does) and the impact with an impromptu version will be considerably diminished. I would choose Vidhicheiyu Vinthalanni, which I think is also a class song, and if I may say so, the best song in Maro Charithra (up there with VJs 7swarangalukkul)
BTW, do you speak/understand Marathi? I've got a few songs for you...and I thought I might include the Marathi album as well...let me know.

(Digression)
Have been humming this song by Jikki (a sort of comeback?) but can't get the name of the film (Ambika starrer??):
Kadhal Ennum Kaviyam
Kanni Nenjin Oviyam
Or Aayiram....
Kanni Ullame (?) Idhuthano...
(I think the MD was IR, but not sure. Any details? Thanks!)
End digression.

Yeah, Vidhicheyu vinthalanni is a good choice. But believe me, the pallavi of Aanathineeyara will be a fantastic choice for an unplugged version, atleast in my mind I can sort of feel it.
And I don't speak/understand/write Marathi. Zero knowledge! I sometimes can't even differentiate Marathi from a couple of North Indian languages like Gujarathi etc. However, a good collection of songs is never a no-no, no matter what the language is. Thank you so much. It is nice of you to do this for me.

Thanks! I remember "Idho Idho En Nenjile" from VS. The Jikki solo was also melodious. File? :-)

The reason for asking you about Marathi: There are some abhangs and Lavanis in that album that are as breathtaking as Aanathineeyara. I thought you might appreciate the scale and execution of those solos. I'll include them (and others.)
Excellence - no matter in what language - should be shared. I know you also have a formal knowledge of classical music - and the songs will delight you.

"I know you also have a formal knowledge of classical music" -- not true.
"and the songs will delight you" -- probably true.

(and I don't believe the first statement is entirely true...it might be entirely modest, and I won't take issue with that!)

Meeting Greatness- Part 8:
V proceeded to share her thoughts on her non-film albums. She spoke animatedly about her collaboration with the famed Birju Maharaj, and bowed with reverence to the great Kelucharan Mahapatra, and said that she felt honoured that KM played Pakhawaj for her Geeta Govindam album. She spoke about the best selling album ‘Onam’ that was by composed by V. Dakshinamoorti. She said, with endearing humility, that the Murugan Paadalgal album, written, composed and sung by her elicited excellent reviews and also proved a best seller.
We spoke about her songs in the Hindi film ‘Meera’ which had music by Pandit Ravishankar, and asked her experience of singing for Ravishankar. V smiled as memories came flooding in, and enthralled us by recalling a particularly interesting anecdote. Apparently during one recording session, Ravishankar had to be elsewhere, and he requested VJ to take care of the recording. VJ wrote the notations herself, taught the instrumentalists the notes, and executed the recording in just one take, all by herself. When Panditji returned and listened to the recorded song, he placed his hands on her head and blessed her, and was speechless with emotion. V said it was among the finest moments of her life.
Her thoughts then went to so many recording sessions. She said ‘ At one time I used to keep hopping from one flight to another. I’ll have a recording in Madras in the morning, one in Bombay in the afternoon, and again another song in Madras in the night. But I was very particular about being in time for each session. The woman who used to sweep the floor at AVM studios knew me well- for I used to be seated even before she arrived!’ she laughed as she recalled those heady days.
She enquired about the website and newtfmpage. Apparently her nephew once asked her to see a thread where her name was being unpleasantly dragged, and comparisons were being made with Lata, PS, SJ and others. She did read the posts and was greatly saddened by the harsh words used to condemn the singers. She said that all artistes had respect for each other’s talents, and it was unbecoming of good fans to degrade other singers just to prop up those whom they like.
J then got up and brought some photo albums and paper cuttings for us to view. We saw so many snaps, starting from V’s early days right to the current concerts. The early b& w snaps, with a tinge of sepia, were a joy to behold. I asked ‘Ma’am, why do you look so serious in all your snaps?’ V laughed outright ‘All my nephews pass the same comment. I don’t know---do I really appear too stern?’ she asked in a perplexed air! I then asked V about a b& w snap, which was shown in Sangeetha Sagaram, one that showed her sitting on a flight of stairs and writing something. V smiled at it being recalled, and showed me that snap and informed me that it was taken in Bombay. J regretted the fact that the snaps were tending to fade. Suresh offered to convert the entire collection and put it in a CD. J accepted the offer gratefully.
V read to us some of her poems. I must say she writes extremely well, and her verses were highly imaginative. Though I am not able to recall the lines, two poems stand out in memory- One was a wickedly witty whiplash on the standards of current day tfm lyrics ( ‘Pulamaipithan Sir was in splits when I read it out to him’ she chuckled), and the other was a moving complaint to Lord Muruga when cancer snatched away her sister’s husband when he was still very young.
V’s incredible talents don’t stop with this. She is also a gifted painter. She showed us some of her works, and they were such alluring images. When I admired aloud a particularly beautiful flower drawing, she immediately took a pen wrote my name, signed hers and presented it to me---She then gifted another drawing to Suresh.
Guys, I am at a loss for words (for once!) to describe our emotions at that moment--
Our hearts filled with happiness at having had such an enjoyable encounter, we rose and got ready to leave. V gave us a set of her devotional albums in various languages. She enquired about our families, and J urged us to call upon them again.
As V & J stood at their doorstep waving at us, we both took our leave. We went silently down the lift, each one lost in his own thoughts, for meeting greatness at such close quarters doesn’t come often in the way of ordinary mortals like us--
