Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

Neel, another exaple of Chitra's cute but expressionless singing is "Anbe nee enna andha kannano mannano" :-) Another example would be "Paaramal Paartha Nenjam" :-)) I too love Chitra's voice, just as I love PS' voice, even though I haven't heard much of PS. But SJ is the singer to beat all singers. There are so many instances where I have been stupefied by SPB's improvisations and expressions, only to hear SJ performing equally capably ! Whatever makes SPB the greatest TFM male singer is what makes SJ the greatest TFM female singer :-)

Yethukku paa ivvaLavu arguments............
PS, the greatest lady kural in IFM & clarity, superb brighas and the rest of it.
SJ, expressions, can sound screechy at times, very versatile.
KSC, very thin voice, great control, gives 100 % in every song , but can never call her a genius, no chance. But awesome control and consistency, hardly ever goes out of shruthi. But in front of PS, Asha, SJ , I would preference the 3 rather than KSC.

KSC's voice is not thin. If her's is thin, what do you say about Susheela. I bet she could never sing a song like 'Mana madhurai'. So where does her voice being thin come in. BTW, define how a voice is thin please.

Can KSC sing one song like pAttukku pAtteduthu or nAn pEsa ninaippadellAm or orAyiram nAdagam AdinAl or Dheergasumangali vAzhgavE or nalandhAnA atleast half as good as PS. KSC fans should not even comment on PS.

Neel:
There is a point in aruvi's statement about ooh lala. To me the first two songs you have listed in the above posting have nothing great to rave about when it comes to the complexity of tune or expressiveness. Donot please try stamping on people summarizingly. HAve you heard "yEthEtho eNNam vaLArththEn" ? Have you heard many of her mallu songs which she has delivered with an expressive voice unmatchable ? You must listen to "aah raathri maanju pOyi" and a couple of others. Though I am not a great fan of SJ (due mainly to her shrieks when she reaches high notes), I will have to accept that SJ is the only person who can sing like any other singer but not otherwise.

Yes, I have mentioned yEdhEdhO and kaNNAlaNE as KSC's two best performances in one of my previous postings. Kuzhaloodhum is pretty good too.

I agree with MS. I knew that when I made my statement that I would get counterattacks like that. But you didn't read my statement properly. I was answering back to the 'thin voice' statement. Oh la la proves that she does not have a voice that breaks. Konjam gambeeram undu. I have never heard a song such as by PS. And to answer to your statement, I think not only KSC but any other singer like Sujatha can sing those slow songs by PS. Because these ladies can sing melodious songs well. As pointed by MS, can you think of anyone else singing 'yethEtho' or 'Kannalanae'. For that matter, what expression is there not in the latter song. I have heard many malayalam songs too, like 'oru raathiri koodi' where she is expressive. About singing at least half as good as PS. Let me tell you something. I am not a particular fan of old songs. Nor am I a great fan of PS. I do admit she has some wonderful songs. But regarding her being an unmatchable singer, I won't agree. I was watching a show of 'patukku pattu' where a little girl around 9 years of age or younger came and sang some beautiful numbers by PS. I was so taken aback that I went to Sk's old songs site and listened to the songs. Frankly, after hearing the little girl sing, I was disappointed. She was very good, but I think there was something magical about the way the little girl sang the songs 'kangal enge' en uyir thozhi, sonathu nee thaana etc.
As far as I can fairly judge, the only female singer in TFM who has a clear advantage over others in being unmatchable is SJ. Who can sing her songs like her. There is one song in 'aaraaro areeraroo' where she sings like a paithiam. And then the song 'naan paada varuvaaiye' etc.., I don't think these songs can be reproduced by other singers with the same feel.

SJ's voice, not the kuyil aspect (which is
the theme of the patti mandram). :-))

Once I listened to a 7 year old in Abaswaram Ramji's troupe. She sang SJ's numbers so beautifully. I never for a moment thought that SJ was an ordinary singer because she was imitable. It just thought that the kid was extremely talented.
Slow numbers do not mean easy numbers. There is a melliya cOgam in pAttukku pAtteduthu. There is a menmaiyAna kAdhal in nAn pEsa ninaippadhellAm. The nANam in aththAn ennaththAn is unmatchable. There is gambeeramAna peNmai in AmaidhiyAna nadhiyinilE. I can't believe that anyone would call these songs not expressive. PS made the lyrics proud by her rendition. Don't judge PS by her late 80s or 90s songs. Unlike SJ age has affected PS's voice.

Hee Hee Hee :-) So everybody agrees that SJ is something special ! Then like Aruvi said, let us drop SJ out of the comparision as she is apparently streets ahead of both KSC and PS in terms of being a TFM singer ! Like SK said, it is now entirely debatable whether PS is the Isai 'Kuyil' of TFM or KSC owns that sobriquet :-) I wonder what happened to Karthi ! Thee kulikka poyitaara ? :-)))

Who said I dropped KSC. It was just a matter of SJ's versatile singing that I was referring to. I also have negative criticism about some of her songs as well. But I hold that she is the most versatile, a category that other female singers have not showed all their talent in, but that doesn't mean that she is unmatchable in all fields of singing. She has her weaknesses as well.

SJ need not be unmatchable in all aspects of singing but overall she just makes it ahead of the rest. I also agree that a song like 'naan paada varuvaai' could be sung only by SJ. It is one of my favourites. The way SJ playfully sings the 'alapanas' while still not deviating from the main scale(Kalyani) is something that should be attributed to her singing abilities as well as the MD IR.

Aruvi, are you serious ? Gambeeram and KSC ? In that case bitter gourd is sweeted. KSC's voice very thin and PS has rendered numbered likes 'indru vantha intha mayakkam', a lot of pep like 'maana madurai...'. if the kid could singed PS numbered , then for her to sing kannalane is easier. And you said you didn;t like ps's singing in 'ennuyir thozhi' ? now i am sure you are jokinged.

Srinath,
Kilikku keechchunnu kaththa sollikuduththathae namma SJ thaan. Andha ammavappoi Suseelaa kooda, aaah thudikkuthu bujam (where's karthi) hmm, sari po neengallam chinna pasanga. I'll talk to my age group (again where's karthi, SL, SK) who've heard PS sing for black and white movies.
Since everybody's throwing challenges around. I got one, have someone else try and sing "Maalaipozhuthin Mayakkathilae", yeah right, like that can ever happen.
I'll end by asing you guys, how would you ever conclude this debate? In the end we'll all be more exhausted, invigorated perhaps, but definitely holding true to our original stance. Have fun.

rajaG;)) how can u come to that conclusion so quickly about Karupaayi? What about vijayalakshmi navaneetakrishnan, manorama or that paati who sand Petta rap? u should have considered all these singers too;))
Udhaya,
I think the discussion is over who is the better singer and not who has a better voice. SJ's voice is shrill, agreed, but it is nature-given. The point is with the voice given one has who has been able to extract or exploit the most.
As far as voice is concerned PS(before) and Swarna(now) have been my favourites. But as far as expressiveness and versatility SJ scores.

First of all, bringing KSC on line with the pinnacle of fame that PS and SJ achieved in order debate as to who topples among the three is a hideous venture. KSC lacks in expression and effeminancy in voice which are the incantational attributes of their singing qualities respectively. She has not scaled up to the level of a legendary singer after more than 15 years.
Between PS and SJ , both have equal strengths and weeknesses in their diametrical areas on a juxtapostional scale. PS can shed expressions of divine feminity and SJ can do that more of a sensual incarnate(many examples). PS can bring emotions of a severed soul(ettadukku mALigaiyil) and SJ can pour devoid feelings of a widow (azhagu malar aada). PS can cause eerie feelings in a doleful melody (vasantha kAlam varumo) just in the same way SJ can howl up the pains of a pining love (uthayam varugindRathe) .It is purely a subjective matter as to whom one will side with as it regards to his/her personal taste.

Rameshb,
I feel that more than the KSC vs PS comparison it is the sujatha Vs chithra comparisons in this forum that have been ridiculous.
