Dear Friends,
Let us vote for 'Adi Rakkamma' from THALAPATHI as our choice for the World's Top Ten Songs poll conducted by BBC!
I am suggesting this song because if in case the BBC people listen to the nominated songs, they will feel knocked out on hearing our Maestro's 150 Vioins' Strings Ensemble!
Let us all do it at:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/us/features/topten/
Yours Always Musically,
Vijay.

"How come VM jumped from #4 to #1 within a day or two(I think that was a Fri or Sat...)?"
Did u notice how the pie chart remained unchanged for a week and then suddenly DDP came into the top ten? The reason is bcos, the pie chart is not real-time. It does not automatically update itself, but got updated once a week. and remember, it includes not only include online entries, but mails, email etc too.

Point taken WN.
Fact is that undoubtedly there is bulk voting going on by all interested parties - IRFs to project worldwide IR's name which hasnt received the respect his music deserved, ARRFs to have an Indian at the top(or to topple IR!) which is why they wanted to have VM and not any other ARR song.
Each one has his reasons to popularise his hero, lets leave it at that.

When the world has got the thirst to hear music like they cannot believe then IR's time has come. Until then, let them go eat coke, speak on AIRTtel and have Bombay Dreams?

I came across a site which had the results of a survey comparing Ilayaraja & ARR.
The respondents are from various countries - India,US, England & other parts of Europe, Singapore, Middle East etc.,
More than 98 % of them said that Ilayaraja is far superior as a composer & the remaining said that they are equal. Not even a single person said Rahman was better.
Also a predominant comment was that Ilayaraja is a great musician while Rahman is a commercial Sound Engineer & nothing more.
Most of the comments were factual & even funny & absorbing.
Be sure to read all the comments at http://vivekrk.8k.com.

My point is, if the BBC is by now not consumed by IR's songs, then the whole point is lost. it doesn't matter if Rakkamma wins or not. I excpet BBC been playing the songs in their studios. I realize they have a very very high level of musical appreciation quality about them unlike the Americans - where the music generally is quite bland like their cuisine. no jaundinced view, but that is the truth. so, if BBC doesn't find the exhilaration in IR's music, then we've to wait another decade before IR finds acceptance thru marketing blitzkreig in the US, from where the music will catch on thru sheer merit in the rest of the world.

Ram, this is one of the good ones in that survey!
Raja sees music as an art and gives his life for it. Whereas Rahman does it as his business. When an art is commercialised, there can be no 'natural'ness in that and that cannot last over a period of time. Raja's creations are unique, soul-touching and will stand the test of time. Rahman is a fad who will go into oblivion once the current generation is satiated of his music. Raja loves India and Indian musical art forms. He wants to enrich it with his idioms and other good features from other musical forms in the world. He tries to refine the musical taste of the masses. Rahman wants to give what the current generation wants - knowingly or unknowingly that it will destruct our culture and heritage.

Some choices & comments at the BBC site:
"Jadu Teri Nazar, Udit Narayan
Why: I love this song because it means a lot to me. I dedicate it to my beloved one. Thanks.
Bhavesh, India"
"Taare hai baraati, Kumar Sanu
Why: This indian film song is melodious and funky at the same time. I enjoyed it more on the 100th listening than I did on the 1st.
Iggy, USA"
"Puthu Vellai Mazhai, AR Rahman
Why: It's a mesmerising, intoxicating, hallucinatory song capturing the enchanting beauty of Kashmir.
Nishim, UAE"
and...
"General comment: You can't call this a poll. It doesn't conform to any standards by which you could call this a poll. Don't tell me that these songs are anywhere near the best .....
Sunny, India"

The problem with HCIRF is that to prove IR is better they would not mind pulling down other musicians from Bach to MS Subbalakshmi to Beatles.I would love to use the phrase "Love to walk on dead bodies to the throne'.
Beatles music represents a generation ,changing world and volatile idealogies that were floating during 1960s.The hall mark of Beatles is even today their songs are pretty relevant.Che Guvera,Hippies and communism the hyped ones during 1960s have lost their relevance. But Beatles goes on because of their truthful lyrics and simple music.
Beatles-obsessed British ?...Occasionally British appreciate something good and even then we have complaints!..Beatles ..Borg..Bradman....Bombay dreams..!!!!!!!!!

Repeat of my earlier question. What does "Various
artists" mean in the vande mataram which topped.
Is it exactly ARR or something about his collabaration with a Pakistani guy in the album?
Please someone clarify.

OISG, stop sermonizing. If the HCIRF's are driven by love for Raaja and his music, it is quite obvious that you are driven by an all encompassing hatred for anything related to Him and His clan. Your attitude is more than evident in the (peaceful until you started posting) "Song-Of-The-Day" thread ... you are a MSV-lover and so an IR-hater, and so an ARR-lover. Nothing more. Nothing less.
So be it. Let's not try to color it with sermonizing ; and posts that appear "balanced".

OISG, well said.
But why r u being so naughty and writing in a balanced manner? Dont u see ur offending some ppl here. If u had added "IR has composed a million m&m songs for pure commercial purpose & his songs led to the degradation of Tamil culture and Tamil cinema" u'd have appeared less balanced. From now, we will all try to appear less balanced. This way, it will be evident we're not the saviours of this forum. Afterall everyone is biased.
What say, OISG?

OISG, that is the essence of Beatles! Good point. However, from an IR standpoint, I mean music at its absolute level - does that music need words to influence society, thought, idealogies? I don't think so, as far I am concerned an IR song has proven more "overwhelming" than patriotic songs. For the world, yes Beatles has been with their journey, but we are talking of the first world, the prosperous world, not of a country like India, where idealogies don't matter, traditions and culture rule - which is simpler and less overbearing than those ideology business, where idealogy happens to be a sophisticated way of controlling behaviour, societal suppression and so on... back to the issue, i don't care what Beatles was all about, IR is much more than all of that, Bach, Thyagaraja or Beatles. His music is absolute in itself and not relative to social moviements.

There used to be this girl called YGeetha who was a regular in the forum. She was a rabid ARR fan, but hated to be called an ARR fan.
So periodically, she would pop into one of the IR threads and post something like "Alai meedhu is a stunning song from Kadhal Kavithai in such-and-such-raaga" ; and then follow up with 10 posts that called IR a jerk.
Whenever someone called her what she was - a HCARRF, she would get all defensive "No way. Look at my post 10 days ago where I praised Alai Meedhu".
Said modus operandi has been practiced by numerous people ever since, but I tip my hat here to the original :)
