Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."

Naaz,
I could not reach earlier. there were two points in your reply where you had asked for my clarification
1."I am not sure if the argument is about singing quality, song choice or (perceived) singer image...Can you please clarify? "
The third was never an issue. Ok by my mentioning "Ezhu swarangal" song you might have been led to believe about the image. As a singer one should sing any type.
Both of us agree on this. so it boils to song choice or singing quality.
If your singing quality is good -- we know that VR is good she should be able to overcome the mediocrity of the song & make it good. But you know this is very difficult. It is like one Sachin pulling off the Sharjah win against Australia. Or Kamal rising above an audaciously stupid script & coming out trumps in Kalyanaraman. But such a possibility is remote. All the songs you have mentioned in the list also prove that.
There you have it it boils down to song choice.QED. My peeve is because she chose( or sang) this kind of songs she did not get the songs of her forte - which is melody. i am still interested in knowing whether this situatuion because of design or accident.
2."Neerada neram..." debate. Is that song a "middling" effort?
Oops my slip is slowing. I checked up In the Thesarus and it throws up so-so okay, average etc. I am sorry!( Middling I thought had a cricketing connotation & so assumed that as gavaskar middles the ball- hitting it off the middle of the bat- type. i thought it was a complement. Sorry I am stillblushing because that -alongwith Ilakkanam marutho, ezhu Swarangal, barathi Kannamma is in the top of my perennial VJ favourites.
So let us say that Neerada is a fab. number.
So inru konjam englipishai sari seyyum avgaasamum kidaithathu.

Vengayam -
More than forte (which in VJs case is assumed to be "classical" film numbers, and other such "dignified" genres) it is Felicity which I think is the ultimate measure of a singer's skill.
VJ has proved beyond doubt that she is at ease in all sorts of songs, no matter if the tune is good bad or indifferent. Also, some of the same MDs who have challenged her with some truly astounding film numbers, are also the ones who have asked her to lend her voice to "thappanguththu" and "kurathikurava" and "folksy" tunes.
Accident? Design?
If you ask me: It's the luck of the draw.

Neel D -
Thank you for the "Police" duet from Neethipathi. I had not heard it in many years. This is precisely the function and value of your VJ site. To jog one's memory, and make it possible to listen some rare and quality music, which is all but gone from TFM days. Your site is an oasis in this bleak and arid landscape of Indian Film Music.
The "Police" song is a composition by Ganagai Amaran, right?
I am also happy for all the songs of Gita Govindam which you have loaded on a separate page. Such singing can only be called miraculous.
Thanks again for all your efforts and may you be inspired to keep the list growning in the future.

Neel D, I don't know if you got my email.
Thanks for informing me about the VJ site. It is a great effort on your part. Hope the site grows to be the best archive on VJ on the web.

Neel,
Why don't you add all the songs from your old site also (http://www.concentric.net/~Neel/) in your VJ site.
(BTW, I have a personal request. Can you please try and add "Sugamaana raagangalae" from Mridhanga Chakravarthi?)
Thanks

Has anybody heard the "Kandha Shasti Kavasam" by VJ?
If anyone is interested, It is available at http://www.kumudam.com/music/mainpage.html under the "Bakthi Paadalgal" section.

Priya - Thanks for the info. I received the album a couple of months back. There was a simultaneous release of another devotional album by VJ - Tamizh Suprabatham. There are some amazing moments of breath control and expression in the latter. I recommend you keep an eye out for it. Both are 2000 releases, I think (and also by the same company lable.)

Naaz, that was a nice comment you wrote. Wish you could write a comment on every song.
s0, I did get your email. Thank you. I will do my best to spread quality music in this age of horrible sounds.
Priya, I will upload songs from the other site also eventually. Tell me if "Sugamana Ragangale" made your day.

Naaz: The company that did the suprabatham and kavasam albums is subam audio. On both albums, Side A has the
suprabatham/kavasam and side B has devotional songs. However, there is a second album on the super audio label that has
all 6 kavasams - apparently the one in popular usage is one of these. It is unclear why VJ chooses to re-sing what she has
sung before for another label. Another example is mere to giridhar gopal w/ music by Ravi Shankar for the movie and by
K. Raghunathan for the Ramakrishna Math bhajans album. May be she doesn't want to be identified with just one version?

I find the different versions of a bhajan or slokam or traditional devotional to be instructive, if not interesting. It is a good point of comparison - especially if two singers have sung the same bhajan under two different MDs. Also the same song by the same artiste, but based on two different ragas or interpretations can be illuminating.
The thing with Meera Bhajans (tamizh equivalent might be Bharatiyar songs) is that they are open to so many different musical approaches, that the singer(s) are happy to challenge themselves again.
An interesting comparison of the same bhajan (just an example, not the "which is better" thing, ) is VJs Jo Tum Thodo Piya in Meera and the same bhajan by LM in Silsila (it did not make the film, but is there on the film soundtrack album.) Two completely, an equally alluring, renditions of divine verse. Check it out if you wish.

Neel, thanks for the new solos, esp. Sugamana Ragangalae and Naad Paadum Ragam. Listening to those after nearly a decade....talk about goose flesh!!
Any chance of finding the seldom heard VJ-KJY duet:
"Poomele Veesum Poongatre" from Echchil Iravugal?
It is another song I have not heard in a very long time. I can still hum it though! Great tune.
Your site is a blessing, Neel.

NeelD,
Thank you so much for uploading the Sugamana Ragangalae song. I really love that song. Also it has been a long time since I have heard it...
I was in fact wondering why Ilayaraja could not think of VJ for the Ivan songs. Not that I do not like Sudha Raghunathan, (I love her carnatic renditions), but VJ would have been a good choice too.

Which film is this song from: "Pulanguzhal Isai Tamizh Tamizh Tamizh Yena..."
I recollect it being a duet by VJ-SPB. I can't put my finger on the title of the film though. I believe the music director was MSV. Any confirmations?

GR - That song is an IR-VJ-MVD classic. You can see the salient aspects of IRs music - which are easily identifiable even to this day - all in that one song. The rhythmic momentum of that song, with a "sandpapery" train-track background effect in the early stanzas of that piece, have now become an IR trademark. The "humming" which appears before the final stanza is another early IR symbol. It has appeared in many varied notes/ tonalities (la, pa, ru, ra...) but has remained one of IRs consistent compsitional markers. For example, Orey Naal, Ninaivo Oru Paravai, Vanam Kizhey Vanthaal Yenna are a few random choices which have the "humming" at different moments in the song.
I don't know why I always visualise a young Rajnikanth when I hear that duet. You are right, that song always is a pleasant surprise.

Naaz,
The song pumele veesum poongaatrae is really good. Thanks for requesting NeelD to upload this song. (and of course Thanks to NeelD for fulfilling it!)
I remember a particular duet by SPB and VJ which goes "Sangeetham ragangal illamala, santhosam samsaram illamala". I think the movie name is "Mohan 30 varusham" or "Asai 60 naal" or something like that. That is kinda different number.
