Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan - It just occurred to me (upon reading your long and informative list) that one of VJs most immortal songs with IR -"Enulil Yengo Yaengum..." - from Rosapoo Ravikkaikari is seldom considered to be an "oomph" number (absence of mukkals and munagals might have something to do with as well,) although it is an out-an-out "seduction" song. The situation in the film is ample proof ofthis: where the wife of the villager is aroused and seduced by the regional/new constable (?) and the whole act is surruptiously watched by the somewhat "slow and naive" husband.
The lyrics suggest an urge for release, escape and abandon (En Manam Gangaiyil Sangamikka....Yendrum Ennai Koodaiyo") and the song has a langurous lilt about it, partly due to its "ghazal/hindustani" influenced composition, and the yearning filled rendition. It is by far the most suggestive and well-essayed exmaple of "mohgam" and "thaabam" presented by the IR-VJ-GA team.

Naaz, oh yes, Ennul ullil engo is a indeed a bewitching song- among the best which Vani sang for IR- the humming she gives in between, like after Malligai maalaigale, and then proceeds in a caressing manner- Malligai mullayin maalaigale, maargazhi maadhathu kaalaigale- one can almost smell the fragrance of the malligai mullai maalaigal and feel the chillness of the maargazhi maadhathu kaalaigal- ethereal---! ( I always feel IR was inspired by his own Ennullil engo, when he composed En Ulle en ulle in Valli, sung by Swarnalatha)
I had just given the example of Vani's many good songs from 1985- like that in every year till perhaps 1986, you can find so many great songs by Vani, from when she faded slowly from tfm.

naaz,
thanks for the reply. yes I do know that professional singers do sing all type of songs but my point is that the kind of cabaret songshad absolutely no scope to become even hummable so what was vani doing singing them. If u remember the first post I did in this thread mentioned " Neeraada neram " - & I was quickly rebuffed by u that the song had already been mentioned!but at that time she was in middling form. It is when you are out of form you grab any which song which comes the way & you add to more duds. ( I just wanted to check whether I was right...The SG cabaret kaala kattathil has VJ sung good songs.
as a counter point the cabaret nos of Helen ( Asha Bonsle mostly!)have beeen given the sort of cult status what with leading heroines vying with each other to perform the nos on stage these days! That genre definitely appeals to me but I was pained at the quality of VJ cabaret/club songs-- they were no hopers.
Saravanan,
i seem to have been caught in the crossfire between some of the old timers in TFM & you in the KVM thread. Mr manisegaran hit me below the belt there & nobody has as much as lifted a little finger why?

Vengayam - thanks for your message.
I am sorry, but I don't recall our "Neerada neram..." debate. Is that song a "middling" effort? It has been one of my all time VJ favourites - for its pace, clarity and rhythm.
The notion of "grabbing" sounds seems a bit implausible for the following reason: As I mentioned, the singer(s) have no clue about the song/tune/situation/lyrics before they sit down for a rehearsal. A singer, if in demand, records nearly 4-5 songs a day. They are in no position to "walk-out" if they disagree with a tune or a turn of phrase in the song. They are committed when they are called to the studio. Of course, some singers have stipulations regarding the songs they will NOT sing - but that is not written in stone, either.
I am also having a problem regarding your ambivalence: Are you saying that the "tunes" were unhummble and hence VJ should have declined them? Are you saying that VJ should stick to only a certain genre of "song" and should skip the rest? Or are you suggesting that VJ does not do justice to "cabaret" songs? I am not sure if the argument is about singing quality, song choice or (perceived) singer image...Can you please clarify?
Here are some (traditional?)"club" songs which VJ has done that immediately come to mind:
Naadinaen Nambinaen - Saval
Pudhu Rosapoovu - Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy
Machchane Paradi - Thangamagan
Rathiri Nilavil Ragasiya Kanavil - Sandhippu
Oothiko Raja Raja Nee Yenna Laysa Laysa - Mangamma Sabadham
Manjal Arraikkum Bodhu - Aalukkoru Aasai
Kuththum Uusi Valikkum - Garjanai
Nenachaen Nenachaen - KuvaKuva Vaathukkal
Final climax number - Shankarlal
Polachi Machchane - Nirabaradhi
Manjal Vanna Roja - Yennadi Meenatchi
Inikkum Illamai - Inikkum Illamai
....
I am sure there are more.
Thank you for sending me back to my lists to check on these songs...The songs as such may not be mind-blowing or original in any significant way, so I believe it is the tune that is forgettable and not the singing? I am not sure how much a singer can do to prop up a mediocre tune, besides giving their best evocative shot. But if the tune itself is a clunker then the song is not made to astound, it is merely a "formula" moment in the larger scheme of tamizh/indian cinema.

If the singer starts passing judgement over the tune then that would amount to interference in the MD s work. Moreover as Naaz pointed out the singer would have the minimal details about the picturisation at the time of recording.
The singer hence is at a disadvantageous position when you start an analysis.
The awful "Inikkum Ilamai" might turn out to be a "Thedinen vanthathu ( ooti varai uravu)" like picturisation when it reaches a better director.

I would like to add few of my thoughts about VJ singing the "cabaret" songs.
Isn't it possible that maybe VJ had agreed upon singing these songs to expand her repertoire, to be classified under the "all-rounder" category? At least, that is how I would look at it. SJ too has sung many so-called "cabaret" numbers, and with the necessary mukkals and munagals. But then, she has many more good songs to her credit. So is the situation with VJ.
VJ singing these numbers should be considered part of her professional demand. She was simply catering to the needs of a section of the audience. I don't think it was her preference.
Also, for all those VJ lovers, all the songs she rendered in telugu, especially in K.Viswanath's movies -- Sruthilayalu, Swathikiranam etc. with KVM and Sagarasangamam, swarnakamalam etc with IR -- are simply a delight to listen to.

Naaz, some more to join that 'club'(!):
Sabalam salanam- O Manju
Kannan Angey- Mangudi Minor
Madhukkinnam yendhungal-Mittai Mummy
Enekkenne Manakavalai-Sorgathil thirumanam
Kannan aruge- Kannan oru kaikuzhanthai
Paraseega kavignanukkum- Anbu Roja
Thanakkoru sorgathai-Vaazha ninaithaal vaazhalam
(the last two being dance songs in the qawali style)
Tharisal tharisu- Achamillai Achamillai
Disco queen-Isai paadum thendral
Vaaika varappukkulle-Thaai mel aanai
The climax song in Shankarlal, which you have mentioned, Unmai endrum vellum too is good example. Also the song in Kuppathu Raja(which Padmapriya sings in a drunken stupor) was superbly rendered by Vani Jayaram.
What about the amazing song- Kalaimagal kaiveenai from Melnattu marumagal where VJ herself sings for both the actresses, alternating swiftly and efforlessly between carnatic and western- excellent!
Thus, VJ, like the other singers of her time, sang all types of songs which came her way- and this does not in any way belittle her achievements, which are many! That is why she has such loyal fans such as Naaz, though she has been out of tfm for so many years. Engal kaadhugalil Avar endrume Paadi konde iruppar-engal pakkathunai iruppar!

Saravanan, are you thinking of the song "Ammamma Aasai Pogum Vegam..."? It is a good example of VJs range and calibre.

Naaz/Saravanan, have any of you heard VJs songs completely from Baala Nagamma? Is is possible to get audio clips from any site on the net? Can you give a brief review of the songs?
other elusive songs -
1. "yaaradhu sollamal" from nenjamellam neeye..apart from a poor quality file in musicindiaonline, not able to find this anywhere, even in audio shops in India (in mp3)
2. "muthu muthu therottam" - Aaniver

Neel D -
Your new site of VJ songs is a treasure! Great job and thanks for effort.
One small suggestion: Can the song titles/film name presented against a more readable (like say white?) background with red lettering or something...might make for easier reading.
Also, the intro and other typed copy can do with a font size increase.
These are just minor technicalities. I have no doubt the site will be a huge succes - and long time coming!

Neel D, great work! Thanks a lot. And the way in which you have categorised the songs- solos, duets with PJ, with SPB, with KJY, with MV and with TMS is excellent. The TMS-VJ duet "Moha veenai" is from Sangili.
