For a good understanding of how to approach this ongoing symposium, please refer to the thread, "Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 1:Iyarkai Varnanai" before you post. Let me reiterate that this is not a patti mandram, but a research symposium.
Please show TFM examples of both poets with regards to just Kaadhal Paadalgal for this thread. Let's roll.

I concur with your judgement,Pagalavan. VM is no slouch in love songs, but Kannadhaasan is exemplary in his love songs, partly owing to excellent story situations and the paattukku mettu advantage. But in all fairness, the sheer variety and volume of Kannadhaasan's love songs is indomitable. He rules this category. Others can post their summations for this topic as well. I will start the third topic, "Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 3: Thaththuvap Paadalgal". See you all there.

This was a great thread. I recognized many of the older songs cited, but did not know they were penned by KD. Guess there is some truth to why paattukku mettu is preferred -- KD definitely seems to have had an advantage there, both in terms of the quality of films and the quality of the music. But VM's impassioned bursts of florid poetry still captivate me. I guess it's probably because I've heard VM's songs more often than KD's.
From what I've read here, KD's grasp of kaadhal in his songs seems more overarching, he tries to capture a mini-theme in his songs. Whereas, VM focuses on the exquisite little details, giving each aspect his own little descriptive touches. I wonder if this says anything about the attention span of today's generation!!

Prakash, Udhaya & Pags:
Regarding the vizhiyE kadhai ezhudhu
(Urimai Kural) song: yes, it is by Kannadhasan.
Since Vaali had some difficulty in writing the
lyrics for the tune created by MSV, Sridhar
approached K without informing MGR, got the song
written and then told MGR that Vaali wrote it;
K was magnanimous to say ok to all this. That's
how the song came to be mentioned as having been
penned by Vaali. Later MGR did come to know
about the whole thing and thanked K for the song.
(For some reason, malligai en mannan mayangum
song is officially credited to K although Vaali
was the one who wrote it.)

This song from "Avargal" was very aptly written by Kannadasan. The heroine( Sujatha ) loves Ravikumar but ends up marrying the bad Rajnikanth. My Summary Comments & Opinions:
kaviyarasar kaNNadhAsan excels himself in this kAdhal pAdal category with exquisite varuNanaigaL, deep/rich feelings, mischievous playfulness, mature sensuality, poetic presentation, tasteful words, classical literary touches & inspirations, sophisticated wordplay and more. The way he captures and presents the various shades of love shows his understanding of the movie situation as well as the intricacies of human psychology.
pudhumaikkavignar vairamuththu tries valiantly but does pale in comparison in capturing the breadth as well as the depth of a rich, multifacted concept as kAdhal. However, I have to say I enjoy the glimpses of new ideas and humorous light-heartedness in some of VM's newer songs!
